Doing too much?

I wouldn’t be surprised if we make a move for Xavi Simons as a “Chiesa replacement” - he can cover the 2 wide positions and a central attacking position
The last time I checked Leipzig wanted €70m. I am sure if we were to go back to them, they'll up it by another €10m

Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing. All businesses manage churn but Slot doesn't seem to have an obvious plan to mitigate, or accelerate the bonding process.

Klopp always put massive emphasis on the preseason bonding camp - cycling and fishing in Germany or Austria - but it sounds like we're staying at the AXA this year.

Maybe the players appreciate the fewer nights out of their own bed. Slot changed the away game routine for that reason, which went down well. Maybe the Far East tour will give bonding opportunities but I imagine they'll all be too busy promoting tyres or noodles, or something. I don't know how we survived before without an official noodle partner.

How do you know he doesn't? That's pure speculation. And I'd suggest staying at the AXA (bar our Far Eastern friendlies) is far better use of our time when we need to integrate new players (esp. with one week less than others due to the Charity Shield match).

You also forgot our little Middle Eastern sojourn.

I absolutely would. We've already gone a long way this Summer to ensure long term strength / competitiveness what I want to see is us wringing the absolute last drops out of the Salah and VvD era before their days are done (I can't see either happy to sit on a bench a la Miller).

Keeping Gomez and Konate could take us a long way this coming season towards a PL + CL double (CL always a gamble - see the RM final) but with both of them we could/should be looking at back to back PL titles if not a domestic triple. Worth every penny of lost income from sales.

Gomez barely played last season even when he was fit. If someone really does pay 30m for him I'd take it.

Konate is trickier cos he's so integral, but even there I wouldn't be paying 65m+ for one extra season, although I can see it's a tough call. It's academic anyway because I don't think Real or PSG will bid for him and I don't think he'll make it clear he's definitely going, so the club will probably just soldier on and try to persuade him to sign.

I am in both boats as I can see integration and gelling is key to retaining the title, and with too many new players its hard to do.
However, Slot in 2022 had to work with an enormous about of new players and he won the title. The players that are trending we are looking to get in are better than the one's they would be replacing and far younger.
However, I think unlike under Pep L who relied on the eye test it seems and his knowledge of a league, now the approach is data driven with more input on a signing.

1. I said Slot doesn't seem to have an obvious plan. We are used to Klopp, who had a preseason bonding trip every year and was abundantly clear about the rationale for it.

2. None of the new players went to Dubai last season, so I have no idea how you think that would have helped mitigate churn.

This is a weird window, maybe spending money that FSG didn't feel too comfortable spending without a proper DoF in place, or because Slot was happy judging players for a season first. Whatever the reason, I think the churn will be worth it to have a squad that Slot fully trusts and uses more. There may be some bumps on the way though.

There can be only one? 😢

Reading between the lines you were comparing Slot to Klopp and I was pointing out that he also works on bonding - but at the right time. Nothing to do with new players.

Again for what it's worth : time at AXA will be a much better method of new player integration than fishing or cycling, in pre-season 😛

If we have 3 CBs and have Badge as 4th choice does that leave us over exposed? So it would be VVD, Konate, New CB and Badge

I get you but this is effectively going to be a new 'Slot' team and most organisations / projects make a specific effort when new teams are brought together. It requires a bit more than your ongoing team bonding meals. New players might not understand each others attitudes, humour, or sensitivities (eg: muslim attitude to booze) and so new teams need to go through that 'norming' process.

I think that's why time away from the AXA could be helpful. Mo has his regular seat at the coffee bar. A lot of players are in their comfort zone, so it is not always easy for outsiders to fit in. It's maybe easier to do the stupid initiations somewhere new and anonymous, where everyone is on more of an equal footing.

Slot is very intelligent, so I'm sure he has a plan, it's just not evident to me yet. I wouldn't be surprised if players getting more nights in their own bed is the driver. Don't care as long as it works and the squad doesn't descend into factions like Chelsea do every season.

Slot lets the players police themselves (social interaction wise) and keeps a very professional relationship with them. Tbh that's ideal, as it's harder to go "oh he picks him as he's his favourite". If he picks him it's because they've shown more in training

I'm not sure Slot had to do much 'policing' last season as the team all knew each other for years, except Chiesa. Now we've got at least four big new personalities come in and a few leaving, so Slot will have to manage that change. This explains better than I ever could :

We won the league but we didn't look as good as we were in the first half of the season. Almost every game coming into Feb was about "getting the job done" and we very quickly got dumped out of the cup competitions with some turgid performances. We relied on Mo too much and when he's not firing we struggled big time. I think people who said we won the league because we had a stable squad, and will continue to dominate is being slightly optimistic. Kerkez Frimpong and Wirtz are just what we need; youth, energy, new ideas and I hope this is just the beginning.

I will want to replace Robbo, Tsimi, Diaz, Jota, Nunez, Jones with better versions at some point. If they last this season they had better step up or I suspect they will be out of the door pretty quickly.

There’s definitely a possibility of doing too much but I don’t think we’re close to it right now. We’re still talking about Alison, VvD, Konate, McAllister, Szoboslay, Gravenberch, Salah being the spine of the team and being quite settled.

I quite like the idea of our backup players being better able to challenge that spine. For example it’d be better to have a center half like Guehi who won’t be content with being third choice, but will actively work to try and push Konate out of the team. One of the reasons I love the Wirtz signing is that it means that it’s possible that at some point in the near future, Saleh will not be the attacking superstar of the team anymore, or at least not the only one.

The only thing that really worries me about a bunch of new players coming into the club is the personalities, but if we are doing our homework and bringing in the right kind of people, and not just the right kind of athletes, then we should be able to handle it.

I know I could've posted this in one of the many transfer threads, but I'm an attention whore so here we are.

Why did we win the league? Or more specifically, what was one of the key reasons behind our success?

In my opinion, and I reckon many of you will agree, it came down to having a settled side. A core group of players who’ve played together for over six years, alongside three or four smart additions who slotted in almost instantly.

We don’t have any big-time Charlies or diva energy. No Balotelli, no Zlatan types. Just a cohesive, grounded squad that is riddled with players who captain their respective countries.

We’ve had a lot of welcome movement in the transfer window, and honestly, I’ve got no complaints about the signings so far. Frimpong, Wirtz, Kerkez, and Mamardashvili all feel like the right moves.

But here’s the thing: I’m worried we might be doing too much. I see people calling for us to sell Gomez and Jota, and we’re already letting go of Harvey, Núñez, and Chiesa (I don't mind the two latter). Now there are even strong rumors that Robbo wants out. This is looking less like Slot making tweaks, and more like a full-blown squad overhaul.

I know that I was previously adamant that Gomez wants to leave, or that we should sell Konaté because he might join Real for free, but in all honesty, we should do our utmost to try to keep both of them.

So going back to my original point: if our settled squad was a major factor in last season’s success, shouldn't we be doing everything we can to preserve that core? I get it—if certain players want to leave, there’s only so much we can do. But we definitely shouldn't be the ones showing them the door.

We were shit after xmas and most people wanted wholesale changes. Isn't that what's happening?

Should be, as I can see Núñez and Chiesa going, but you never know. If the right striker ain’t around, I don’t think we will settle for a replacement. More likely to wait until the right one is available
And while that is going on, sell both Jota and Nunez?

Nah can’t see that happening unless we have a replacement ready.
Diaz Salah gakpo Wirtz Jota is easily the best strike force in the league as it is.
A top drawer striker would be great, but it’s icing as opposed to cake.
I’m more concerned about the CB situation.

That's my point, it would be daft to sell Jota.
