Where do we go from here? Squaddie? Sell him for funds? Somehow continue to start him?

I dont think there is any point in selling him now, his value has dropped at lot.
Keep him as a squad player and hope he finds his confidence again.

Been unlucky with loads of passes and shots this year and is a better player than people give him credit for, but the hiding on the pitch and cowardly behaviour needs adressing.

i reckon someone would pay ten and i'd be livid if we turned it down.

Squaddie - back up. The fucker gets another season to show if he's capable of having sone sort of positive impact.

As has been said - it's not as if he could contribute less.

As I'm sure Modo would point out, Downing has contributed as many goals and assists in the league fir us as Joe Cole & Acquilani put together.

We'll need a bigger squad - getting rid now just means another player we need to replace.

Benitez bought a couple of shitty/average wingers like Gonzales, Riera, Pennant and Babel.
Some of them not even "premiership proven" and you know how important that is.
How many of them got 0 assists and 0 goals in their first season?

I'll answer it myself:
Riera 3 goals, 3 assists
Gonzales 2 goals, 0 assists
Pennant 2 goals, 3 assists
Babel 4 goals 3 assists

The only player who didn't manage any assists in his first and only season was Antonio Nunes.
Downing is basically Nunes, but £19 or whatever million pounds more expensive.

cos if the statement is true, and he's prepared to repeat it to the americans at the meeting, he won't be the manager.

One of the "experts" on Norwegian telly said that after the penalty last time, the opponents should have been gracious enough to let him take one more just to see him hit the other post.

There is no doubt in my mind who the mental weak one is.

Ha, he should work on our telly.

We won't make ourselves look that stupid and sell him after one year. For what we are likely to get for him we might as well keep our fingers crossed that he grows a pair of bollocks and puts a shift in next year.
For me he is by far the biggest disappointment of all our buys in the last two years, and my expectation for him were not that great either, I thought we were getting an average to good winger that would weigh in with seven or eight goals and double that in assists.
Unlike Henderson who has disappointed but still has the chance to improve and show us he has got something, Downing should be at the very top of his game.....*sigh

I think our best bet of getting shot of him would be a weird swap thing with some other club with a similarly problematic 'star'. We should just get out the list of the other flops of the season and start calling around looking for swapsies.
