If he spent less time looking at his reflection in his own boots and more time trying to fulfil his evident promise, he and we would be in a far better position.

Otherwise, he's a victim of being too versatile. He's suffering from being the jack of all trades. Had he been deployed in one position for the last half dozen years of his career, we'd have a far more assured player.

Is it too much of a footballing cliche to say he needs to keep things simple? He looks like he wants to swag all over the show but he's just not able to do that yet.

I just worry that he's not dynamic and quick enough with the ball at his feet to be a top midfielder. There's a decent player there, but to flourish it might need to be in Spain or Italy.

However, controversial as this seems, the right manager could make a great domineering, ball playing centre back out of him.

First of all he needs to improve his fitness as in some games he looks shattered from the hour mark which is weird considering how lazy he is sometimes defensively. Playing more games will also help him but he has to justify his place in the starting eleven to do that. Maybe he just needs the right mix of players around him to get the best out of him.

I agree. What's even more puzzling is the contrast between how he looks out on the pitch for us and the way Sami Hyypia spoke about him when he signed:

"He is quite a technical player and he does the simple things perfectly, with 100 per cent concentration, and I think he will have a great career at Liverpool.

"With the work ethic he has, I know the Liverpool fans will love him. He is a very dynamic player and he is quite mature physically as well. He needs to make this next step forward in his career and Liverpool is a great club for him to continue to improve.

"He's also very skilful and he can play it very simple. I think he suits the Liverpool style of play and physically he can compete in the Premier League for sure.

"I was very happy for him to see him sign for Liverpool and I'm looking forward to watching him in the Premier League."

Can you please add the regards bit Vlad? It's just not the same otherwise.

Agree - and I miss the old Avatar as well.

I think Can lacks balance in the midfield. Too often he tries to be flashy rather than being concerned about end product. He complicates play and holds it up. No doubt the ability is there and a really good technical level. On the days where he remembers to move forward with the ball and add momentum, he is a great attribute to any midfield.

Obvious issues with consistency. Let's hope he learns fast.

He is a "dynamic" player but he's one that lacks intelligence right now and often doesn't seem quite sure of what he should do when he gets the ball. That might be a product of playing in loads of different positions over the last few years but either way he's needs to be coached and developed.

The good news is that there is clearly a lot to work with there. I'd like to think that if the situation is managed properly we will have a top class player on our hands in a couple years time.

Given how well he's played on his good days (and to some extent the sheer size of the bloke) it's easy to forget how young Can still is. I'm very hopeful he'll develop into a monster for us.

He's definitely one of our most talented players but needs experience and nurturing. I think playing with Milner will do him the world of good.

Hes making his debut for Germany tonight and making a fucking abortion of it.
Hes fucking awful positionally.

I like him but yeah I wonder if he has the bad side of Gerrard's game in him - at least with Gerrard for the majority of the time his other contributions outweighed good faults.

I wonder if he tried to limit his game for now would he improve

He was played as a right back. They won 3-1 and he was the youngest player in the German team.
He played the full 90 mins and had a good game.

As Keni says, there is a lot to work with there. He's certainly isnt the finished article yet but that would be a bit weird seeing he's 21 years old. Hopefully we have the neccessary coaches to get the best out of him.

Give him time and he'll be boss.

Can's biggest problem, and ours, is that he doesn't currently have the attributes for any of the positions we need him for. He turns too slowly, he tries to carry the ball too far without off-loading (which other Liverpool players have this criticism aimed at them - more than one, so maybe we should also be looking at the manager's instructions ?), isn't a DM, isn't an AM, isn't a wide player and is therefore in competition with Henderson and Milner for a CM slot, neither of which he has a hope in hell of dislodging. One has to wonder .. eventually just what position is he most likely to 'own' ?

It was also interesting to read his own comments on transitioning to the PL. It's 'faster and more physical' in the PL than the BL, 'you don't have time to think before someone is on top of you, closing you down'.

Joachim Löw: "I like the way Emre Can plays. Technically he is clever, he plays clean, simple passes and has a good positional sense."
