Post Match EPL Newcastle (H) 4-1 January 31st 20:00

I don’t think they were largely useless. Gakpo was much improved and could easily have gotten a goal or assist.

Salah even more so and did get an assist.

Not to say both were infuriating at times too.

My main is that I just don’t see it at any club really.

I don’t ever recall Salah and Mane swapping under Klopp.
Well they were great so it wasn't an issue then.

Just gonna cross post it here, cos I fucking love Hugo and the connection he has with Flo, the one and only bright spark from this mega lolz of a season we're having.
There's just something about French players, that arrogance they uniquely seem to have, it drives you insane sometimes, but sometimes, well, as Hugo was running on goal, he wasnt shaped up correctly, no way he's shooting there, other players check back and pass across, but no, that arrogant French cunt just perfectly puts it in the bottom corner with the outside of his foot, he had no right, it's fucking scandalous and fucking beautiful.

Fun is the word. I was worried when we signed Ekitke by his general personality, dress, cars, etc, that we'd have a fucking Anthony on our hands, but I think he's just got such inner confidence and genuine ability that playing football of all levels is like kicking the ball around the park. He doesn't take life too seriously and that's partly why he adapted so quickly and has taken Wirtz, a far more serious and introverted figure, a little longer.

Together they really are becoming quite something. If I had to hang my hat on one cause of our season being salvaged, it's them two.

We were really poor up to Newcastle scoring. Was the usual boring slot ball.. Once they scored we actually started playing at pace and started getting at them.. Took 2 pieces of individual skill to unlock Newcastle
2nd half we controlled the game, gave nothing up, the wirtz goal was good and the football gods looked down on Konate..
That first 35 minutes though, that's genuine slot ball tactics and that is worrying.. We need to play like we did for the 60 odd minutes as we can't be giving teams a head start in games

Started nervy and could have gone behind.

Then we took control and went behind and could have folded.

Hugo MOTM for me as without him I’m not sure we would have turned it around.

Sublime second but his all round play and arrogance was fantastic and exactly what a team struggling for confidence needs to see from its attackers.

Wirtz some lovely play, magical assist and beautifully controlled finish.

Salah had some awful moment but kept going, kept showing, almost scored, played some good balls and got an assist too.

Gakpo showed glimpses too just not enough.

Virgil was excellent but for once was outshone by his playing partner who motivated by his dads passing had his best game in years.

Lovely to see Ali race up to celebrate with him.

Dom was fantastic as a stand in RB and Kerkez goal aside was very promising. I’m loving how he’s growing into the role.

Macca is building confidence and had a good game but needs to cut out the fannying about like a few others when getting a tap.

Gravy was exceptional and Tonali couldn’t get near him on more than 1 occasion.

Ali made some crucial saves too. I hope he stays til he’s 40!

Jones made a big impact when he came imo and lifted us from our sit back approach. The tackle was magic.

Nice to see Endo getting back to back minutes and always great to hear the Chiesa song after that flick.

All in all a brilliant display considering recent form in the league and Slot continues to defy all the fans who want him gone.

Back in the CL places, still in the FA Cup and into the last 16 of CL.

Maybe just maybe it won’t be the worst transitional season ever.
I agree with everything except the part about Salah

Apart from the obvious reasons I read that Wirtz came across by himself and is living by himself. Without any support, and at 22 yrs old, that's tough.

If we can find a way to get Isak on the pitch instead of Mo next season we could be on to something.

We looked far too weak in midfield sacrificing a CM for Wirtz in first 30.

Having Isak Tekkers & Wirtz as front three with proper CMs/DMs behind will do the business.

I said a month ago i thought they were the best attacking pair in the league, and they keep improving their connection week after week.

Almost scored?! He was a mile away, bloody awful shot ! Because he refused to use his right foot, again.
I think "should have" scored is the best way to put it. Though on goal and then toe pokes it like me playing footy in the garden.

Granted, great run and pace to get there against Hall who gave him nothing all game, which is definitely something I couldn't do.

Salah ended up with a very good assist in the end, but he had an average game.
His stats from yesterdays game shows a player on the decline, and its fair to say we'll improve as team in general once a replacement is starting next season that is more suited to how the team shapes up now.

1/3 defensive duels won, 0/2 take ons and 2/6 accurate crosses. Hall was bombing forward into space and they were overloading our right side the entire game.

Feels like the rest of the season will this type of shoot out. Hopefully we'll get enough points to finish 4-5th.

I think van Dijk has been massively undervalued in this thread (MOTM too). He was great. It seems he learnt from last week and was more attacking the ball rather than using aura to defend. Overall he was better than Ibu.

Nah, Ibu played when we needed him and was visibly dominant. Right man for the occasion, Virgil is always Virgil.

Mo isn’t the reason Isak isn’t playing. Next season, first he needs to be available and fit. Same goes for Frim. But still don’t see him on right side, we would need to buy this summer till then it’s Mo and probably Frim.

My Mo points isn’t necessarily about Mo but that we need to keep the future of this team together (Flo & Hugo) and the only way Isak should fit is as well as those two, not instead of.

I also haven’t said Mo is the reason he isn’t playing

Yep, would be nice to have Isak even as an option especially to keep Hugo fresh and Frim back on right. Szbo is s wasted talent at RB too.

Virgil being Virgil has been a hindrance in the MOTM threads. Keeping track of them last season we would have loads saying nothing between him and Konate then just give it to Konate because Virgil is Virgil.

Salah is shit now I'm afraid. He's a weak link. We need to replace him big time. I wouldn't replace Gakpo though cos I think Rio looks so great - they should be rotating with each other by this time next year.

So I think we need a RW, some kind of proper DM, and a CB.

We ALREADY have 95% of the parts to make an exceptional team. THat's why I'm so fucked off with Slot that we are so boring and shit.

Good to see Konate almost back to his best again (and grab a goal). RE VVD, one thing we'll really miss is his distribution. The midfielders hand off to him quite a lot.

Our midfield is still non-existant a lot of the times. We can put Wirtz in the 10 position but it leaves us with difficult decisions. We don't defend very well as a team at all and there is a lack of balance in midfield. A Kante-esque player would be transformative.

Ekitike's energy (and I don't just mean in a footballing sense). I said it in the other thread too, but can you imagine if Klopp had've gotten instead of Nunez? Ah... shame.

Towards the end of the game, camera kept panning to Slot who appeared to be gesturing 'calm', which the team obviously weren't heeding. Was I misreading?

Anyways, it's been a fairly miserable season so far. Hopefully we get more 'fun' games like this.

I didn’t say it never mattered. But that part was shit and boring like many games we’ve played for the whole 90.
