Florian and the (Slot) Machine

I really just want to see if he even attempts a semi-logical response.
I remember a time when we broke the Brittish record signing Stan Collymore, it led to nothing for us. But I think people are expressing too much delight in this signing.

Already I feel the pressure on the lad everytime I read what people are expecting. I just dont want us to put a jinx on things with all this chest beating. I did a lot of that last time we won the league, was so fucking proud, then VVD was fucked over, then eventually the entire fucking defense.

You see @Whaddapie , for as long as I have supported Liverpool, I expect us to compete and win a quad every season. Klopp nearly achieved it, it was a shock to my system. But we have high standards at this club so when we dont win a Quad, but we win something , I am happy we won that something BUT know we can improve.

He IS the Messiah.

I should know, I've fathered a few.

Everton have for a few season now taken out our players with bone breaking challenges. I think we should rest Wirtz for those two games

I had to check Wirtz's stats vs those of Szobo after reading that pressing/winning the ball back stat. The below is a mix of quotes, stats and my padding !

Szobo

Szoboszlai ranks eighth in the Premier League this season for total passer impact, with 42.4, but he jumps up to fourth among non-defenders.

He is one of only 11 Premier League players to have made at least 200+ pressures in the final third and 300+ pressures in the middle third of the pitch this season, where a pressure is defined as approaching the player in possession with the aim of either winning back the ball or limiting their passing options.

Only three players – Dominic Solanke, Dejan Kulusevski and Palmer – have made more counter-pressures in the Premier League this season than Szoboszlai (240), and Kulusevski and Palmer have both played at least 300 minutes more than the Hungarian.
He jumps up to third on a per-90 basis with 11.9, behind only Solanke and AFC Bournemouth’s Marcus Tavernier (1,000+ mins played).

Szobo made a total of 888 presses, far more than anyone else in our team, 99 of those resulted in the opponent losing the ball.

An area in which he is unremarkable though is G+A (we'll come to this later in the conclusion).

If we compare them directly (noting that one was in the BL and other two in the PL) then Wirtz is clearly well ahead in every dept. (vs Szobo and Jones) : goals, shots, accuracy and conversion rate.

Wirtz is also has a much higher chance creation stat with 2.3 chances per 90 this season and 0.5 assists – compared to Szoboszlai’s 2.0 (0.3) and Jones’ 1.1 (0.2).

Passing is interesting as Jones and Szobo both have a better overall pass completion, but perhaps explaining Wirtz’ inferior passing accuracy (82.49%) is the fact that he is attempting more passes, completing more through-balls (which are trickier passes) and balls in the opposition half – 40.1 compared to Jones’ 30 per 90.

Passes attempted per 90 : Wirtz 61.6, Szobo 44.7 and Jones 55. Though balls : W 1.1, S 0.2, J 0.2. Passes completed in the opponent's half : W 40.1, S 23.3 , J 30 .

Keeping possession, and recycling it to confuse and open defences, is key to an attacking midfielder’s play. And you won’t be surprised to hear that Wirtz, again, comes out on top. This season, he’s been highly involved in every single one of Bayer Leverkusen’s domestic outings – taking 88 touches per 90 (S 59.8 and J 71) and averaging 3.3 completed take-ons (S 0.8 and J 0.7) in the same timeframe. Both Jones (esp.) and Szobo have a better take on success however (not much in it).

That said, Wirtz has lost possession 21.9 times per 90 thus far – which is, by far, the worst rate of the trio. That is likely by virtue of him being more adventurous in the final third. However to balance that out he won 6.4 duels vs (S 3.7 and J 4.9)

--------

Conclusion

Initially I thought Wirtz could be the first choice starter (as a deep lying 9) over Szobo but the heat map below makes me think the vertical 2-2-2-2-2 more likely since it would accommodate both players and also suit Jones where required. Szobo doesn't win the ball back that often but his pressing leads to opponents often losing possession with misplaced passes. So Szobo deeper when required also makes sense.
