Liverpool have emerged as the frontrunners to sign Florian Wirtz should the Germany international decide to leave Bayer Leverkusen this summer.
The Anfield club has been vying with Bayern Munich for the 22-year-old starlet, but there is growing pessimism in Bavaria regarding their hopes of landing the player.
That will come as a huge boost to Liverpool in the event of Wirtz choosing to leave Leverkusen and accept a new challenge in the Premier League.
Sources in Germany have indicated that the attacking midfielder, who can play in a number of advanced roles, has been impressed by Liverpool’s ambitious plans under Arne Slot to build on this season’s Premier League title success.
A deal will remain complex due to Bayer Leverkusen’s £126million [€150million] asking price, but there is a feeling that they will accept a lower base figure and that a chunk of any fee can be paid in add-ons as is normally the case.
Liverpool are already in touch with Leverkusen regarding the £30million signing of Jeremie Frimpong, who has already passed a medical at Anfield. His arrival will be confirmed after the transfer window opens.
Intriguingly, Wirtz is close friends with Frimpong. They have sat beside each other in the dressing room and Frimpong, 24, used to give Wirtz lifts into training before he could drive and that link up would make a move less daunting for the talented youngster.
Leverkusen have wanted Wirtz to sign a new deal with a lower release clause that would come into effect after the World Cup in 2026, but the strong interest in the player has complicated their hopes.
They are also loath to sell to a rival in Bayern, who succeeded Leverkusen as Bundesliga champions this season.
Wirtz has operated from the left in a 3-4-3 system this season under coach Xabi Alonso, who has left Leverkusen to take charge of Real Madrid.
He can also play off the right, as a false nine and as a No10 and the two-footed Wirtz would give Slot the versatility and technical ability that he craves.
Liverpool have said they have not made a formal approach over Wirtz, and denied they held a meeting with the player in the north west earlier this month.
However, they will hope to make a statement signing and recruit Wirtz who had also attracted attention from Manchester City.
