Florian and the (Slot) Machine

Can’t recall seeing him play.

He looks very slight, not particularly fast and doesn’t have a bag of tricks. If he was coming as an Iniesta or David Silva I’d understand more but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Someone sell me him as a false 9.

Just watch the highlights reels. Then consider both Bayern and City wanted him. Then look at his BL records. Easily one of the best attacking MFers in the world.

Detailed tactical background. He’s a very high volume passer, and routinely drops deep to control the game with his passing. Very two footed, and extremely efficient dribbler and finisher.

If I were to hazard a guess, our preferred formation against bigger teams will be Wirtz and Szoboszlai playing as two 8s/10s/false 9s (whatever you want to call them), with Gakpo/Diaz and Salah as narrow wing-forwards. Kerkez and Frimpong providing the pace and width. Just a far superior level of technique and control through the middle than we’re used to.

Against low-block teams, I suspect we will still use a proper striker with Wirtz behind him.

I’ve watched his highlight reels and finishing looks good but yeah still intrigued as to how he fits. He looks like sort of player that’d be ideal as an Iniesta type.

Are you sure you watched the right player?

Interestingly Jan Åge Fjørtoft is saying that BL will ask for a lower price from Liverpool than Bayern (quoted €150m). He said it is more like €125 - 130m (£105 - 110m).

@tombrown

Well.. if that’s what gets him over the line.

But, respectfully, he should aim higher - like… wanting me to fuck him would be akin to him turning down us, City, Bayern & Real so as he could fulfil his dreams of lighting up Inver Park for Larne FC

No he wasn't. We signed him for £5m. It was a decent coup, but nothing like this.

I’m going to side with @Dreambeliever here - at the time Kewell was very much one of the best forwards in the league - he positively turned down other offered and bigger fees for Leeds because wanted to sign for us.

What happened next is different, but, Kewell was one of the best attacking players at the time.

It would be akin to us signing Sako from Arsenal now.

So you’re telling us Saka is now broken?

Could see him & Szobo lining to like two false 9s like those games we deployed Szobo and Jones in that shape.

Diaz Gakpo & Salah encouraged to play narrower and run in behind, Frimpong / Bradders and Kerkez keeping the width.

Sexy

The level of technique through the middle with Macca, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai and Wirtz will be something like we’ve never seen.

Klopp’s teams were built to outrun opponents and dominate space.

Slot on the other hand is a self-confessed Guardiola disciple. So he’s clearly building a team to outplay teams through the middle, in a way that Guardiola’s teams have done so successfully.

Yep - you could see Wirtz and Szobo marking CBs leave their line and make space for the wide forwards.

Also can’t remember if i saw here or elsewhere but Wirtz is right at the top for most duels this season, so he fits Slot’s desire of a pressing beast too.

honestly also a little concerned about his build but the winning the ball back high up the pitch stats are cool. i’ll reserve my excitement for when (if) he actually plays for us.

I’m clearly in the minority but that highlights reel isn’t blowing me away. Players looking good in Germany doesn’t automatically mean they’ll flourish here. He looked to be afforded way more time on the ball than he’ll get here and he doesn’t look strong or lightening.

Hopefully he’s as good as everyone is saying that watch German football week in week out but I’m not as blown away as say I would be by a Suarez Dutch highlights reel or Torres Spain.

No it wouldn't. As I remember it Kewell had already shown signs of decline or at least stagnation by that point. A couple of years earlier, yeah he was Saka. When we signed him he was more like Martinelli.

I remember being pleased but not wildly excited, like he was a great player who'd hopefully kick on now. Obviously this is just my impression from 22 years ago so could be wrong.

Kewell started on fire for us too until he got injured and never recovered.

I know, he was a great player and a big signing. I just don't think it was remotely close to this.

I'd say Torres is the closest, then probably VVD. Getting Wirtz at this point feels like when Bellingham went to Madrid or Hazard to Chelsea. One of the most coveted players in the world making his career defining move.
