I think Rafa had this right when questioned on it a few years ago. I thought it was an outstanding response at the time and it's just as relevant today.
He told the journo that Lampard was a wonderful midfielder - as was Gerrard. They are both world class and wouldn't look out of place in any team. But, he went on, I could play Gerrard at DM and he would be world class, I could play him on the wing and he would be world class, I could play him at RB and he would be world class - in fact, I have.
That sorts is then!
It's not Chelsea loving. Singling out one or two players is hardly a crime.

I read somewhere that he's scored 47 penalties. That's a quarter of his goals doing something that the tea lady could do.
I don't rate him, I think he's been a luxury player in chelsea teams that have had great midfields to cover for him. I don't think he'd have done it elsewhere. And he's never done a fucking thing in an England shirt.

Lampard has had the luxury of playing in an excellent Chelsea side that for a long time was set up for him to succeed and whilst you have to give credit to the guy for making the absolute most of that, I feel that it has to be taken into consideration when judging him as a player.
If we're comparing Gerrard then it's only fair to make that comparison when he had some decent players around him and the freedom to focus on attacking - in those couple seasons he matched and exceeded Lampard in an attacking sense (in my opinion of course) and was one of the attacking players in Europe to watch out for.
