I'm guessing someone did the math and it made more sense to bring in a striker of great potential whilst he was still cheap as opposed to attending the more pressing need of getting another striker in. So many factors to consider. A couple of years down the road and if this German is shitting goals week in and out, we'd be calling the deal an astute piece of business and laughing at how we were all so hung up about Dempsey. But in between it can also all go wrong and we'd be watching Liverpool in the Championship. There are certain risks to take but who's to say which is right or wrong? And did Brendan prioritise the signing of Samed over Dempsey? Who knows?
But I do recall that FSG puts a premium on youth and growth potential. In this case, maybe to the detriment of the club.

We lost Bellamy, Kuyt, Carroll and Maxi and replaced them all with people I'd never heard of. Four top class forwards replaced with people brought to make Liverpool more profitable. At least when Arsenal do it they still aim for the CL.
