I want to like it, because I want to see improvement. You have to expect good things and bad things from any deal because there is always likely to be competing priorities.
However, this doesn't read like one big deal at all. It reads like a number of different issues that are still at different stages of completion.
The fishing access is obviously the big issue, it is something that the EU clearly wanted and the big card that the UK had to play.
It is essentially a continuation of the situation that is currently in place but is due to expire in 2026. The previous plan was to renegotiate every year. So the government has said that this can continue for 12 years.
The fishing industry hasn't exactly LOST anything in the short term. In fact, it has GAINED in the short term, along with other food producers, because this deal makes it easier to export, with less checks etc etc.
However, one may ask, is that enough in exchange for giving the concession for 12 years? Could the UK have asked for more for this? I genuinely am not sure. If it makes exporting easier and helps UK companies then I would probably fall on the side of yes, but the question would still remain.
The other aspects of this don't appear to be related.
The defence and security deal is obviously good, but the principles of that can't possibly have been a sticking point. That benefits both sides. The money side of it (access to EU funding) hasn't been agreed.
Similarly, the youth experience scheme is not agreed yet either. That is just an aspiration. Again, a good thing, but not part of this deal.
The e-passport gates removes an inconvenience, but again, it puts the decision on individual countries, who are not obliged to allow it, and there is no timescale. It's also not a done deal.
On a more positive note, the carbon and steel sounds positive to me.
I'm certainly not trashing it. I may not like the government very much, but given how much I detest Reform I'm certainly rooting for the government to do better, but I am not sure quite how great this is yet.
