Liverpool have reportedly agreed terms with Barcelona right-back Martin Montoya ahead of a potential transfer from Barcelona this summer.
The Reds have been searching for a new full-back as they have deemed Glen Johnson to be surplus to requirements, with the 30-year-old admitting he is set to move on in the summer.
Montoya, 24, has struggled to make an impact at Barcelona, and according to Fichajes.net he has agreed personal terms with Liverpool as he looks to test himself abroad.
The two clubs will still need to agree on a transfer fee, but it appears that the Spaniard has moved a big step toward moving to Anfield.

So what does this mean for Manquilo? I know it was a 2 year loan deal with Athletico having the option to cancel it after the first year

Why doesn't he continue to 'test' himself where he is? First things first. Stop struggling where he is before 'testing' himself elsewhere.

Was wondering that myself. Maybe Brendan has decided that wing-backs are the way he wants to go, and that doesn't really suit Manquillo (whom I rate in a back four).

Manquillo had a few games where he looked pretty good but he also had some where he looked extremely lightweight and got taken off as he was being targeted and didn't look up to it.

He's still young of course.

Perhaps but don't really see him as a wingback, Montoya that is.

Fair enough. I've hardly seen Montoya so couldn't really judge that either way. Hope this doesn't end up as another false move in the transfer market.

From what I've seen, Montoya is the right sided version of Moreno - quick and looks good going forward but no end product and terrible defensively.

It's only the Metro so let's hope they have learned the error of their ways with Moreno and we go for a proper defender who is decent on the ball and can get up & down the line rather than someone whose only attributes are they are fast.

I saw Montoya recently during the euro game Alves was suspected (PSG leg 2 I think) - he looked distinctly ordinary. Unwilling to go down the line (maybe unable to due to lack of pace) and his default move was to pass back on every occasion, this despite playing in one of the best squads in the world.

Underwhelmed by this link - there is a reason he has stagnated at Barca for years without playing many games or attracting any other offers for loan.

He represents the token effort by Barca officials to fill squad positions with Barca born youth players.
