I'm assuming that the reason he was played there was to ease him in, bring him away from the contact zones a little, and give him more time and space on the ball.
Playing Markovich further forward didn't work, same with Can, but they were moved away from the goal they improved dramatically, despite the fact that they are both more suited to being further up the pitch.
I'm guessing that's the idea with Ibe, give him more time and space on the ball, let him develop a little confidence and he'll be moved further forward once he gains that game experience.
