It's not shocking that we're thin in places throughout the squad.
But it's worrying that we won't have funds to spend after spaffing so much on players who have yet to have significant impact.
Konate and VVD have looked a lot better of late and Macca in patches too, so hopefully that helps us, but I do think we're starting to see some good stuff from Frimpong, Kerkez and Wirtz, Ekitike has been fine anyway.
We need to improve the defense or at least bolster it, but the rest of the side once we get Salah and Ekitike back should be fine. We can juggle things to cover all but the worst injury crisis, but Slot needs to start trusting his fringe players otherwise we're just asking for trouble.
Last season we had 4 CB and 2 RB as well. With Joego, Konate in the team. We didn't even need Gomez so not sure what's your point. If we had 5 CBs and 3 forwards in the squad and when Konate Virg stays fit the entire season and the 3 forwards go down with long term injury will the narrative be "Why do we need 5 CBs?"
The point is that defensive foundations are built with straw, and it would come home to bite us at some point. The season before last, we got lucky at CB and had Trent playing the vast majority of games at RB.

Well, since when have we ever started a season with 5 established CBs in the last 10 seasons. We have never done that and to push the blame back to Edwards just because we have had some injuries in the back is just hindsight at work. He was going for 4 CB with a youngster in Leoni, but failed at the last minute if that's any consolation. You could blame the Guehi fail on him but for not bringing in 5 CBs, that's just unreasonable.

According to the Howden Injury Index, under 21 players have consistently recorded the most severe injuries in recent seasons - meaning they spend more time sidelined per injury than any other age group.
In the Premier League specifically, the average time missed per injury for under 21s has risen by around 187% compared to three years earlier.
The report suggests this is as a result of increased physical demands on players.
With 19 year old Jayden Danns’ issues with stress fractures as a perfect example, Liverpool have adjusted how they’re handling other promising younger players like Rio Ngumoha.
Slot explained that this includes giving Rio two off pitch days per week to help manage his overall load - reducing cumulative demands while still allowing him to adapt and develop physically.
Might explain why we haven’t seen more of the 17 year old, despite how promising he has looked.

Asking for injury updates on Joe Gomez is the lowest point yet this season. It's like that noise people say they hear from the ocean before a tsunami.
Gomez is not a functioning CB, and Konate has a long history of niggling injuries. We either needed 5 or we needed to change the makeup of the 4. The majority of fans were wised up to that in the summer, and long before. It's not even up for debate, IMHO. The only grounds of sympathy I have are for the Leoni injury.
Yes - considering Gomez part of a "4 centre back squad" makes no sense. He's a utility defender who in the 5 games a season that he is fit could play at any of RB, CB or LB.
I've always liked Joe, over the years he's been the best partner VVD has had. But, he just can't be relied on and, I agree, shouldn't be included in the 4.
Next season could look like VVD (getting on), Gomez (the usual infrequent appearances), Leoni (back from his bad injury, might take a long time to get his eye back in), Konate (gone), Endo (gone and no good in this position anyway). Then you're into the youth players, none of whom look ready.
That needs serious attention.

Yeah it's been obvious for a while that we needed two big centre back signings. I do have some sympathy too over Leoni, as he was earmarked as VVD's successor and may still be, but we still need two new signings regardless. VVD is on his last legs and Gomez and Konate could very realistically not be here next season.
Is the captain physically and perhaps a little mentally drained having been needed to play every minute in a difficult and trying season?
