Fabinho has eased Liverpool fears of a defensive crisis, by returning to light training.
That is huge news for boss Jurgen Klopp, with his Premier League-leading Reds facing a pivotal Premier League clash with Leicester next week without a fit or available recognised right-back.
The Anfield manager has James Milner suspended for the game next Wednesday, and injury worries surrounding Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and even youngster Ki-Jana Hoever.
Fabinho limping out of the game against Crystal Palace last weekend with what was feared a serious hamstring injury left only 18-year-old Rafael Camacho, who is really a winger, to fill in on the right side of defence.

But Liverpool medics are now extremely hopeful Fabinho will be fit to play once the Reds return to England from their warm-weather training camp in Dubai. The 24-year-old is Brazil’s first choice right-back after playing there for much of his career before being converted into a central midfielder by previous club Monaco. And it is understood he came through a rehab session with physios in Dubai to take the first steps back towards fitness in time for the Leicester game.
Liverpool will handle his return carefully but are confident the injury wasn’t as serious as first thought. His availability would be a major bonus for Klopp as he looks to stay four points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table.

Midfielder Gini Wijnaldum will be fit to return, which would allow Fabinho to play right-back.
That would solve Liverpool’s immediate injury woes, with Alexander-Arnold expected back for the trip to West Ham a week on Monday.

Gomez could be ready by then, too. The young England international is due to return to training in the next few days, which would give him a chance of being available to face the Hammers. Milner will also be back then after serving a one-match ban for a red card brought about by two bookable offences against Palace.

Shame to hear that Trent won't be available for Leicester. I'd much rather have Fabinho in the middle, especially with Maddison calling the shots in AM for Leicester. It isn't the end of the world to play Hendo & Gini in CM together, likely with Naby or Shaq in there with them.

Update from earlier today (Friday):

Jürgen Klopp has confirmed Trent Alexander-Arnold is making good progress in his recovery from a knee ligament injury, but it’s too early to determine whether he will be in contention to face Leicester City on Wednesday night.

The full-back sustained the issue during Liverpool’s 1-0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion on January 12 and subsequently missed the 4-3 victory against Crystal Palace last time out.

Asked for an update on Alexander-Arnold’s fitness, Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com: “He is better, much better, but we have to see. It needs to be stable – and in the moment it is stable and it’s about the pain.

“Everyone knows how desperate Trent is to play; he can ignore pretty much everything. That he played that game at Brighton was sensational, to be honest. It’s unbelievable. The same for Gini, who got a little injury early and it was very painful.

Adrenaline is obviously really hard stuff and gives you the opportunity to grow a bit in the game, so they did.

“It will not be long [for Trent], but is he ready for Leicester? I don’t know, we will find out. Then it’s West Ham and then Bournemouth. After that he will be 100 per cent [back] but until then, we have to see.”

Like Alexander-Arnold, Georginio Wijnaldum also picked up a knock to the knee at the Amex and sat out the clash with Palace at Anfield.

“Gini is good, better,” Klopp added. “The plan is that he will have one session today and then we have to see how he reacts on that. Hopefully we can build from that point.”

Not so good news:

Jürgen Klopp has confirmed Joe Gomez is still ‘a couple of weeks’ away from full fitness.

The defender sustained a lower leg fracture during the 3-1 win at Burnley on December 5, forcing him to sit out the 10 fixtures that have followed since as he began a rehabilitation programme at Melwood

Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com: “We have to wait. Obviously it was really unlucky in that situation. The injury is not like Trent or Gini where you know ‘that’s the only thing’. It could have been like that, but then more and more we found out it’s a more serious thing.

“We have to wait, for sure, a couple of weeks. We will see, it is difficult to judge in the moment.

We thought three weeks ago he would be closer and then we had to make another diagnosis in which we saw that it didn’t work out so far as we wanted, that’s why he is not in training or running on the pitch.”

Shame about Gomez. So unlucky with injuries, hope that's not a recurring trend with him.

Illness prevented Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho from participating in Friday’s workout at Melwood, but Dejan Lovren, Ben Woodburn and Ki-Jana Hoever returned to full training.

Liverpool were back at their West Derby base this morning following a short training camp in Dubai, with a double session planned for the squad.
Van Dijk and Fabinho were absent due to illness, though their lay-off is expected to be brief - and the Reds’ ranks were bolstered as Lovren stepped up his recovery from a hamstring injury. Elsewhere, Woodburn and Hoever also returned to training after knocks.

Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com following the day’s first session: “Dejan is important. How it looks at the moment, we came through our centre-half ‘crisis’ at least. “The boys did brilliant, but of course Dej before he got injured was in fantastic shape. It was not too long obviously, which is good. Joel, thank God, is back. He was in fantastic shape before he got injured and now showed already again that he is still the same player, that’s good and hopefully it stays like this. It’s very important. [A couple of players] are ill. So, that’s the weather change, little things. No, it’s nothing we have to be too concerned about.”

Klopp admitted he was delighted to have Hoever available again to take part in the day’s training sessions after a minor groin injury. The defender, who turned 17 this month, followed up a first-team debut as a substitute at Wolverhampton Wanderers with a red card in an U23s encounter with Brighton & Hove Albion at the Academy on January 14.

“It’s good news, absolutely,” Klopp said. “Ki-Jana suffered a bit, not from the Wolverhampton game but I think it was a bit mentally stressful getting a red card a few days later [for the U23s]. I watched the game and I’ve never saw a red card like this. It was not a harsh tackle. It was – if [anything] – a bit clumsy, if you want. But it was for sure not last man, not a goalscoring opportunity. I really felt for them and for him. He is 17 years old and then he got such a knock. The next day, because he only played 15 minutes, he could train with us. After he trained with us, he had a little groin problem. Psychologically, he was affected.”

Liverpool jetted out to Dubai immediately after the 4-3 victory over Crystal Palace at Anfield last weekend. Klopp admits it’s ‘too soon’ to determine whether the warm-weather training will have a positive benefit, but it was an opportunity he was keen to take. He explained: “We will see [how important it was]. We had the opportunity to do it and that’s why we did it. As it always is – and as it is for all of us – December [is] the most intense month with then the start of January immediately [is the same].

“Usually, like we saw last night with Chelsea and Tottenham and the day before that City played and now at the weekend again, it’s a very tough period. We tried to do it [training camp] to try to bring them all on one level, or a similar level again, because we had a few players who played pretty much all of the time and a few players who didn’t play that much or were injured.
“We used these four days for that and that worked out pretty well. Of course, we have to see in the end what we can take from it.”

Now back at Melwood, Liverpool’s sights are firmly set on their next outing – a Premier League encounter with Leicester at Anfield next week. “Now we have a normal week to prepare for it completely normal,” continued the manager. “Intense training, of course, important things – focused on us, focused on our strengths, focused on our weaknesses, where we have to improve, what we want to keep doing and stuff like that. It’s the best time in the year if you have a week like that and can train. Unfortunately, we don’t have a full squad, we will have a couple of injuries, but players are coming back or, like Ox, getting closer, Rhian Brewster [is] getting closer. On the other hand, Joe still needs a bit of time and then the others we have to see day by day. We have a group and this morning we had 17 [players] who could train completely normal and that’s what we try to use.”

So basically Klopp you have a short squad at a critical time yet again.

Yes - but it's alright coz everyone accepts it. Personally - he is to blame for Gomez's injury - by getting him to play in that right back position, and he is to blame for loaning out Clyne - who should have always covered for Trent whenever there was a need regardless of whatever stupid media reason he gave. He got Coutinho to stay for another half season, so why not dish out the same treatment to Clyne? If Clyne plays regular at Bournemouth for the rest of this season - I think his absences from the squad and the reasons given were total ballshit. Also if he really wanted to accommodate both of them then there was always the option to play Trent right of midfield with Clyne still in the squad and also rotate when needed. Gomez has always looks out of sorts in that RB position even before Trent came in for him, think when you struggle like that in a position you are more likely to get injured with all that shitty running up and down.

Now we got some weird shit to contend with watching Fabinio play in that position. Fucking hell - all because we decided to loan out our one experienced RB, we have one of our key midfielders banned for a game too.

I know - but why not any of you ? - surely you don't want to go through the shit we went through with Rodgers, and Benitez again - I am just preparing myself for any big let down at the end and for the summer when some of our star players get fed up after putting all that effort in and want to fuck off to teams that will give them the trophies they desire.

Could you please make preparations in private?

This is extremely worrying.

In combination with the fact that I can only find one of my lucky Mario socks, I'm extremely concerned.

I am going to be searching the entire house today, I'll keep you all updated on my progress.
Stick it on your lad - problem solved

My lucky Ireland rugby top is ready to fly into the fray, once more. We have an 100% winning record when I wear it, at least 60% of the time.
