Jamie Redknapp - was he overrated?

He was a really terrific footballer. Great range of passing, fantastic set piece taker and a good attitude.
He was ruined by injuries. I really loved watching him play. Like an Aldi Alonso.

Really don't know how I missed all of that. I remember that he was a good passer of the ball, but during those days I was so focused on impact players like Fowler, Owen, McManaman, Collymore etc I just didn't focus on Redknapp that much.

And when Gerrard broke through I was like, Redknapp who?

Lampard was a scoring machine though. Don't remember that Redknapp scored too many goals.

You do know he suffered loads of injuries? And a few serious ones at that.

I thought he was an excellent player when he was fit. Such a shame injuries hampered him so much.

I loved Redknapp, could never figure out why he didn't get more game time for England. He scored some sensational goals and was a superb passer of the ball, just got injured too often.
The two moments I remember him best for were the miss the cup final against Utd in 96 and the free kick to beat the champions Blackburn with the last kick in 95 just as news came through that Utd drew with West ham to hand them the title.

Never mind the fact I had a massive crush on his mrs

Well, I know his injury lead to Gerrard breaking through.
To my defence, during those days only one game was broadcast live here in Sweden every weekend. So I mostly watched highlights.

He had good passing range but it was hit and miss, he was powder puff and not very industrious (plus he broke easily) and he had alot of games that would pass him by. He did well alongside Hamann but it was a partnership we didn't see enough because of his injury record. Potentially he could have been very good but we'll never really know just how good because his development was completely hindered.

His partnership with Barnes and then Ince was one of the reasons we used to get cut open so easily by teams. None of them had any discipline, we tried just about everyone in that holding role but it didn't work - Ince, Redknapp, Thomas and even Harkness. The criminal thing was we actually had a defensive midfielder who we persisted with destroying the career of at right wing back, in McAteer.

It was only when we started using Carragher there and then Hamann, that we started to get our shit together.

I've told this story a hundred times on here, but it's always made me laugh.

Listening to the Radio City phone in one Saturday evening after the game, this guy rings in to offer his thoughts on Jamie Redknapp. So he comes on air and says, "you know what Saint, I was sat in the Kop today watching that Jamie Redknapp, and I kept thinking to myself, he must have a fucking massive cock to be shagging that Louise".

McAteer was a winger

McAteer was a winger

He'd played central and wide when he played for Bolton: His primary position was in centre midfield, though he was an able right winger and full back.

We actually started to play him back there in a couple of games before he left us and he played well, I think he got a brace in one game against the Hammers.

Reminds me of the time when I was in my car waiting at the lights to leave the car park at the Hunts Cross Asda store. It was a sunny day. In front of me there was a convertible saloon car with the hood down, and a smart-looking girl in the driver's seat. Two hairy-arsed lads were strolling by. One of them decided to give audible expression to his thoughts:

"Ey missus, you must be a hell of a good fuck to have a car like tha'!"

The girl shouted something back, but unfortunately I didn't catch what she said. I'm sure it was something withering.

Remember a game we beat Saints at home and I think he alone had 120 or so passes with around 100 of them being successful. On the top og his game he was very good, but same as Sturridge you never knew if he would play the next weekend.

He did get some game time as a sweeper for England, Hoddle even compared him to Beckenbauer. One can only presume his injuries were taken as evidence that he was a bad person in his previous life, so Rob Lee took his place.

Incidentally I reckon that 95 team was one of the best teams not to win the league. We had loads of good players. You have to think that with a proper manager we could have won it.
Rob Jones, Steve Mcmanaman, Redknapp, Barnes, Fowler, Collymore, Mark Wright, Molby, Rush, David James, John Scales, Walters, Clough, Thomas
We should have got a tune out of that lot.

Pretty much what Mark says. Injury put the brakes on his development and ruined his 'prime' years too. His main problem was his lack of 'bite' so without Didi to help out he could easily be overwhelmed by more physical midfielders.

How was he at Spurs? That Fantastic club with great manager and players who always come ahead of us? He must be delighted he got a career there.
