footballers being footballers again ...

The Stoke City winger Jermaine Pennant has been charged with drink-driving.
The player was questioned by police after his BMW collided with a silver Audi in Sale, Greater Manchester.
The 29-year-old of Altrincham, Cheshire, has been charged with drink-driving, driving while disqualified, and having no insurance.
He is due to appear before Trafford magistrates on 9 May.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "At about 5.20am on Sunday April 29, police were called to Cross Street to reports a white BMW collided with a silver Audi.
"The driver of the Audi went to hospital for treatment.
"He was treated for a minor injury to the back. He has been discharged."

He wasn't a terrible signing, just not a particularly good one.

It looks like Pennant just never grew up

He wasn't terrible - you're right, but I always equate his arrival with missing out on Alves ... That's why I say 'terrible.'

I never thought that deal was on - we had the money to get Alves because Moores had lent the club 10m for transfers and there was already 7m in the kitty.

Moores lent the club £10 million to buy Kuyt, Seville kept rising the fee for Alves is why we pulled out.

What an idiot. Wasn't his defence last time that he didn't know he was banned because he couldn't read?

I can actually see what Benitez was trying to do when he signed Pennant. He was tipped for huge success as a young player, lost his way massively but looked like he was starting to sort himself out. It could have ended up as quite a shrewd signing. As it turned out it was disastrous but I'm not sure you can account for a player being as heroically thick as Pennant. Though maybe signing his contract with a big shaky cross might have been a warning sign......

He's an insult to anyone who dreamed of being a professional footballer but failed to make the grade. He's got plenty of talent but most of the time he can't be arsed to use it and never seems to push himself no matter what club he's playing for. At least someone like Heskey puts in a shift, and even Collymore had tantalising periods of application and ambition, but this little tit has just wasted his own career.

He probably earns enough in one week to pay a driver's annual salary, but decides to drive under the influence while banned. Stupidity of Baldrick proportions

I remember getting flamed from numerous directions when we bought him from Birmingham and I said this is how he'd end up. Giving someone a second chance is fine, but you have to try and decide how likely that is to work. With Pennant it never was.

Yes, I stupidly tried to convince myself he'd finally 'click' with Rafa as his manager, but as you say he's beyond coaching. It was laughable when he went to Spain and tried to claim he was 'liberated' after being forced to play like a robot by Rafa. I dread to think how he'll end up once he's retired.

Oh definitely. And its not as if he would have been driving round in a Micra or something is it? He would have made his presence pretty obvious!

Whether he will go to jail or not, who knows? I mean, if he was banned this time he must have done something else since that other time he was locked up years ago and so must have avoided jail then.

...and it didn't make any difference. Now he's up on three charges at once, at least some of which are repeat offences. He's a recidivist, and I'd lay odds the court will be very much less than impressed.

True, but I would have thought that once you reach the stage of getting sent down for driving offences, then pretty much every time you do it again you are likely to get sent to prison.

It doesn't sound like he was jailed when he re-offended last time (though in fairness I have no idea what he did. He may have just clocked up a lot of points!) so he might get away with it again. Judges/magistrates are not exactly predictable! You are probably right though
