Liverpool are close to clinching a deal for Portugal Under 19 playmaker Joao Carlos Teixeira.

The Sporting Lisbon youngster starlet grabbed Liverpool’s attention by scoring against them in the NextGen - a Champions League-style tournament for youth teams.

Teixeira, who has just turned 19, is set to sign on at Merseyside for a deal worth up to just £850,000, according to Portuguese newspaper Record.

The playmaker, who has come through the same academy as Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Figo and Paulo Futre, was reportedly targeted at the insistence of Liverpool’s academy technical manager Jose Segura.

Teixeira has shown enough promise to train with Sporting’s first-team this season, but has yet to make his senior debut.

If he is to become half as good as Cristiano Ronaldo.., thank god Phil Thompson is not about to stick his nose in, to scupper the deal..

Anyway can't be that good he would of signed for UTD by now.. they are their feeder club after all..

at 19 would he go into the 1st team or reserves ? I have a feeling it's the reserves , seems more and more players don't get into the 1st team until like 20 or 21 .

More so, would he get a place over Shelvey?

Apologies for the cynicism, but he's 19 and we're buying him for less than a million and without having to fight off any other team (as far as I'm aware).
He won't go anywhere.

We buy players at the most important time of their development - when they're just breaking into the first team and establishing themselves - and then give them next to no playing time. A few games in the reserves here or there and perhaps after 12-18 months a loan period in the lower leagues after we realize that there is probably no benefit in them sitting in the stands week after week.

Then we wonder why so few of the youngsters we pick up make any kind of impact at Liverpool.

If I was a young player at the age of 18 or so in this guys positions there'd be no way I'd move to Liverpool unless I received cast iron guarantees in writing about my development at the club.

Liverpool have agreed a deal with Sporting Lisbon, close to £1m, to sign one of the most talented young players from the academy that has developed the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Nani.

João Carlos, 19, is moving to Anfield after coming to the attention of the Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish, during a scoring performance in the NextGen series of youth-team matches earlier this season.

The teenager has been talked about in Portugal as being similar to a young Deco but Sporting have financial issues and have decided to accept Liverpool's offer in keeping with their usual policy of nurturing young players and then selling them for profit.

Carlos has trained with Sporting's first-team this season, but has not made his senior debut.

Doesn't this guy share the same name as that Dutch striker Grobbelaar was hinting at?

Maybe Kenny stitched him up a bit?

To be honest I'd like us to sign their entire youth team cause they really handed it to us in the next gen comp.
Teixeira is a brilliant player.

I really hope he gets to play 'cause we've already got a talented creative mid in the reserves and I dont see him getting a shot any time soon.

has any of our child prodigies/talents actually made the 1st team during the last 5 yrs ?

we've spent shitloads of money on our youth teams that it's probably becoming very embarrassing now. Can anyone research how much money we've spent on young talents during the last few years or so ?

I bet the likes of Everton, Swansea, etc will laugh at us.

There are smaller clubs who have spent peanuts and yet their youth systems are able to produce quality players. What's going on with ours ?!?!

Only young scousers survive the Liverpool deskilling process.

Tippy tappy bellends would be far better signing for Arsenal or whatever.

Although I share some of your frustration here, I wouldn't be surprised if we've actually recouped most of what we've spent on youngsters if not all of it to be honest.

We've not had the best of luck with any of our foreign talents agreed but there's more than a few homegrown coming through the ranks these day. We need to do better overall mind.

Ronaldo would be playing for some bag of shite in Hungary with Nemeth if we'd have signed him.

We are using all of our games giving our 26 - 28 year old first teamers time to develop. I am not sure if this kid will make the match day squad at all.

trufax

we managed managed to devlope a single winger (bought or youth) since macca in 20 years. It's a safe bet we wouldn't have developed ronaldo as successfully as the manc did.

No, this lad is from Uruguay. 20 years old, striker and plays for Groningen. 7 in 12 games. From the same town as Suarez.
