Job security - arne

First things first... We're a ways off from him getting sacked, and rightfully so. He's just won the league. However, we have firmly moved from "untouchable" to, erm, "touchable".

Hindsight is 20/20, and looking back now, I think we can start to reframe things and see them for what they actually were. Last season, I was a bit unsure of Slot's gimmick, so to speak, but he had seemed to take the finer points of Klopp's frenzied, emotional heavy metal football, and blend it with a cool, composed tactical approach. A marriage of two styles. The best of both worlds. Now, looking back, I'm not so sure. Anyone remember the Everton side under Roberto Martinez about twelve years ago? They had the solidity of Moyes and the technical flair of Martinez for one really good season. Then Martinez stayed longer and longer, got his grubby little paws well and truly into that team, and eventually that solidity crumbled, and the technical flair became aimless tiki-taka bellendery for the sake of it. I feel we're in a similar position. The longer Slot has had this team, the worse we're getting...

People talk about how we've been poor this season. But it's not just this season. We've been rubbish since about March, and any results we did seem to get, seemed to come about through "vibes" and fear factor. That's well and truly gone now. We could've easily lost all 9 league games this season. That's not even hyperbole. Any games we have won have mostly been last minute winners after the original tactical plan went out the window, and Slot resorted to throwing 5 attackers on and hoping for the best. Where's the cool, calm tactician of last season? Was he ever really there in the first place?

Someone said he was winging it. Someone else said that the longer he's had this team, the worse we've gotten. Our defence is porous. Our attack is bereft of ideas. In possession there doesn't seem to be any discernible plan. All our players are regressing. What is Slot actually doing? I'm not sure. He has a bit more time to show us what he's working on. But there's definitely a deadline on that, and it's approaching fast.

I didn't think he was winging it last season. Now? I'm not so sure...

Every word of this is spot on

To be fair, it's pretty hard to press when everyone plays long ball against us. We do need to improve our ability to pick up second balls. This is where Arsenal's idea of playing with 4 CBs across the back line makes sense.
I’d try to have the defence restrict their attacking instincts and try and push as a unit to the half way line without leaving those gaps on either flank. Use either Jones’ or Slobby’s running to break through their lines, or Wirtz passing. We also have ball carrying through Frimpong and Ekitike. And Chiesa is the greatest Italian since Maldini, so he can do what he wants.
This is what I said pre-Frankfurt. It still applies.

We could have had the option of keeping Quansah, who we even play at RB a few times last season.

Now we can’t even risk playing Gomez as a safe RB as we have no other CB back up!

He can have the rest of the season, but if I were FSG, I’d be putting those contract extension talks on hold.

He’s been winging it all year with this squad, in my opinion. The dip in standards when we were cruising towards the title was already concerning, but it’s now looking like part of a much bigger issue. The problem is, we’ve already spent the equivalent of three summers’ worth of transfer funds in one window, so we need a manager capable of making it work. There won’t be another major rebuild any time soon.

That said, it’s not entirely on him. Several key players have been poor, and some of the new signings look questionable, both in profile and ability. There’s plenty of blame to go around, but in football, it’s always the manager who ends up paying the price.

Yeah, that's fair. Had we signed Guehi I think he would have played at RB in many a game already.

Wonder if he'll be fucking off to Dubai again during next month's internationals. Maybe by then he'll have the freedom to spend all the time he likes out there.

1. His game management is poor.
2. Some of our established players are past it.
3. Whoever signed some of these new players wants shooting in the face.

It's not all on Slot but he isn't helping himself. My gut feeling is I wouldn't lose any sleep if we sacked him tonight.

I was up for relaxing post season win but it seems his Ibiza trips with letting the squad go to Dubai shows a lack of professionalism. We look like we lack energy, concentration and effort.

In fairness the list of reasons are long and complex.

Fuck me fans are fickle and impossible to please.

We just won the league and a dip in standards is very normal the following season.

Jota’s death.

Isak being completely unfit, playing poorly and then getting injured.

Gravy being injured.

Macca injured/terribly off form.

Kerkez taking longer than expected to learn a new system and team.

Frimpong being rubbish and injured so far.

Bradley being injured and poor so far.

Konate’s form dropping dramatically.

Allison getting injured.

Salah’s finishing dropping drastically.

Wirtz not hitting the ground running in even a basic level and appearing too slow and lightweight.

Guehi deal falling through at the 11th hour.

In fairness it’s a long list. Give the man time.

I just don't understand our purchases this summer. I didn't understand them at the time, because I didn't understand how they'd operate together without opening the team up way too much. Now I understand them even less.

It's not even about whether any of them are good.

I think slot should be doing much better. But I think if he were, he would be pissing off hundreds of millions of talent and investment for games on end. That seems very much not moneyballing.

Didn't you rank the summer window 10/10 and call anyone who didn't agree "delusional"

You're right about 1 thing, fans are fickle.

And how many of these are precisely within the manager's control?

Someone mentioned his game management. I actually think that was one of his strongest attributes last season (though we hardly ever played well across two halves of football - pointing at something wrong with his preparation/tactics. But at least he seemed to sort out the initial fuck ups). Now, he just throws a load of attackers on and hopes for the best. No tactical nuance at all. I think he might be a bald fraud.

Pretty much every team we've played the last few weeks have been doing the same thing. High tempo, full throttle the first 20 mins, get an early goal, sit back and hit us on the counter.
Slot apparently has no solution for this.

Furthermore he's been whinging about it like it's not fair. It stinks of Arsenal, Wenger and Fabregas being fannies moaning about teams with less possession playing direct football.

There's more than one way to skin a cat. You've spent a quarter of a billion quid. Deal with it.

Let’s go through this one by one.

If you play well and win games, fans tend to stay off your back. We are doing neither.

Jota’s death now seems like a big fuck off excuse. This is an industry where every summer players go. There is a massive churn across every club. I’ve lost close extremely close co-workers. I can’t be using that excuse for being shit at my job 3 or 4 months later.

Kerkez is still a kid and we may have bought the hype, not the product. But we aren’t telling him to keep chalk on his boots which isn’t helped by having a cut in and shoot spastic on that side.

I rate Bradley, and he’s being asked to do three things which can’t be done at the same time. Provide width for the static Iron Man in front of him, under lap him too and then defend after being told to push up.

Konate has always been 50% shit. Let’s not beat round that bush. He throws himself in to shit he doesn’t need to do, runs like he has eaten at German Doner Kabab at half time and then goes round like he is looking for a Pokémon.

Alison ALWAYS gets injured. He’s had one season where he didn’t. He’s the most injury prone number 1 ever. That made the second choice keeper a fucking key decision. Marma doesn’t have the feet or covering the back third skills to be our number 2.

Salah has been finished for 2 seasons. Today showed exactly what loads of us have said throughout. His goals papered over his displays. He scores and everyone goes on about how boss is he is. Forgetting the other 89 minutes of shit he served up.

Wirtz isn’t a wonder kid or plug and play in any team player. A bloody hipsters “top 5 player” who ends up losing balls and shitting out of tackles. It’s like watching a shit Thiago at times. Oooooo what a lovely step over.

Not nailing down another CB is fucking killing us.

I don’t want to give him time. I want heads on sticks. The manager and the cunts who thought giving Mo £400k a week, Wirtz and Isak being boss signings and ignoring the 6 and wings deserve to be sacked.

I’m shocked anyone would say they wouldn’t lose any sleep if he was sacked tonight. That could easily send us into a spiral we all feared would happen last year. You’ve all lost your minds.

The manner in which Jota died was exceptional an warrants greater patience imo.

I think the time for Robbo to be no1 again is now.

Gakpo is a big issue down the left imo.

Ha ha ha yes the reigning POTY who propelled us to the title has been finished for two seasons. Fuck me. You can claim he’s finished now if you want but he was nothing short of outstanding last season and that’s just for assists!

I knew Wirtz was a huge risk and of course we could manage any one or even a couple of these issues but them all happening at once? Nobody can manage that.

He deserves way more than you are giving him here.

Only the second manager to give us a title in 35 years. Ya let’s fuck him off. FFS. Also I’m not buying this he just played Klopps style. Don’t forget Klopp was done by the end and we thought a total rebuild was needed. Slot deserves immense credit for how’s he come in and done what he’s done, but nah let’s throw him to Wolves at his first serious poor run.

I discovered my coworker dead following a stroke. He had been dying for three days on his living room floor before he was found. This was when we had been a team together for years. I still had to go to work and do a job.

Robbo can’t be number one choice because he can’t play twice a week.

Yes! Salah has physically dropped. The same argument we have had for three years. He has been indulged and judged on spreadsheets rather than actually watching him play football.

First half of the season won us the league. We got worse and worse as time went on. We lost that “muscle memory” of Klopp.
