He was quite erratic for us but he was better than that big quilt Alberto who we bought to replace him.

I think it was always clear that Shelvey had a lot of talent but for whatever reason the club didn't seem inclined to develop it. It may just have been a case of arriving at the club at the wrong time as we were dealing with Henderson and Gerrard. There is an argument - and it was strongly made at the time I recall - that we should've loaned him out rather than sold him. We can only hope we put in some clauses that will net us a profit should he earn a big move at some point.
It's still too early to tell whether we made a mistake letting him go though. He may never have developed in the same way here as some players need serious game time in a stable environment to reach their potential. Then of course there is the possibility that he's one of those players that will be good for a lesser team but never quite make it at a top team for whatever reason. Time will tell.
As usual, it's not so much about the player we let go but the ones that came in after him.

Jonjo's biggest problem for us was that he was good at football. And that just doesn't suit the way we play. I mean, some of his passes used to go forwards. Fucking madness.
He was very inconsistent last year - Monk called him out on it. He didn't end the season that well. He's had 4 strong games.
Let's see how he does over the course of 20-25 games, and how he holds up Swansea (as everything that's good goes through him), before rushing to use his name as yet another nail to crucify Rodgers with. There's no shortage of nails.

No, he's been improving since Monk started pushing him and talking to him. Let's not dismiss the work of a good manager just to defend another one. No one's claiming Shelvey is some kind of superstar. I've said since his early days here - have a look in the reserves threads - that he had the potential to be a decent player. Now that he's starting to show that, I'm perfectly entitled to note it and applaud the help that he's getting that I always said he needed. If that's intolerable in a thread about the player, then lock the thread. Otherwise, just agree to differ.
