Dalglish targets midfield men as the answer to Liverpool’s title search

Raul Meireles may have been the PFA player of the year last season, but the reason he is not being offered a new contract may be because Kenny Dalglish is building a British dynasty at Anfield.

Charlie Adam is expected to complete a move from Blackpool to Liverpool today and will join Jordan Henderson at the heart of the Liverpool midfield, but Dalglish will not stop at Adam as Stuart Downing looks almost certain to leave Aston Villa for Liverpool.

It looks as if Blackpool will take the £8m and Jonjo Shelvey on a season-long loan for Adam, and while the Liverpool youngster will be disappointed to find himself further down the pecking order following the new arrivals, he should improve for a full season in the Championship.

Stuart Downing is determined to follow Ashley Young out of Villa Park and it is believed that the England winger’s move to Liverpool is nearing completion, although it won’t be done before the Adam deal.

Raul Meireles can count himself rather unlucky not to have earned an extension to his contract following an impressive first season in English football, but it seems Dalglish is keen on making his mark at Liverpool and the player looks certain to be sacrificed.

He could be a number of foreign players leaving Anfield this summer, with Lucas the only foreign midfielder certain of being at Liverpool next season.

Maxi Rodriguez has stated a desire to return to Argentina, Alberto Aquilani has never wanted to be a Liverpool player and will leave as soon as somebody makes a decent offer and the same can be said of Christian Poulsen.

Nabil El Zhar is still learning and is likely to be a Liverpool player next season, but Dalglish is preparing to assemble a British squad and should Downing follow Adam to Anfield, the Reds will boast nine British midfielders in the squad that is 10/1 to win the title next season.

Re: Latest roundup

Kenny Dalglish wants to bring the best British talent to Anfield as he continues rebuilding his beloved Liverpool, but that has not stopped him from looking at other top players. One of those is Jose Enrique who has just a year left to run on his contract at Newcastle and as yet he has not signed a new deal.

SkyBet have installed Liverpool as even money (2.0) favourites to land his signature, but Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has not given up hope of securing a new deal for Enrique. Alan Pardew had the following to say when he was quizzed on the matter of Enrique leaving. “We’re not confident we can keep him, but we’re not scared of losing him.”

The Spanish player joined Newcastle from Villarreal in 2007 and he may fancy a move back to his native country, especially as Barcelona have expressed an interest. SkyBet have odds of 7/4 (2.75) available on that move happening, and who wouldn’t want a move to the Spanish giants. Real Madrid are also in the running to sign Enrique, but they look unlikely to snap him up, according to SkyBet, with odds of 8/1 (9.0) available.

If it is Champions League football Enrique wants, and he is happy to stay in this country then it could be Arsenal who sign him. SkyBet are not confident of that move happening either with odds of 5/1 (6.0) available this morning.

The lure of Barcelona may be to big to ignore for Enrique, but Liverpool and Dalglish will not give up easily on the defender and he may get his man at a decent price. A busy week in store at Anfield with Adam and Downing expected any time soon, and Liverpool fans will be fancying their chances of challenging at the top this coming season with all the new blood that is due to arrive.

Re: Latest roundup

Aaron Lennon and Moussa Sissoko are the latest players added to Liverpool’s growing list of transfer targets.

Liverpool’s director of football Damien Comolli is working over time as he looks to seal Stewart Downing and Charlie Adam's signature in the near future.

Comolli will then switch his attention to the right hand side of the Liverpool midfield. The club is desperate to add pace and creativity to the side and have being crying out for a winger for years now.

The Liverpool hierarchy believes that Lennon would fit the bill perfectly and Comolli’s old relationship with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy could help make the deal a realistic possibility.

However Spurs will not just give away their England international who has three years left on his current contract meaning Liverpool will have to fork out a figure believed to be £20m to get the players signature.

That would take Kenny Dalglish’s 2011 spending close to £100m after splashing out £35m for Andy Carroll and £23m for Luis Suarez in January, and a further £20m on Sunderland England Under-21 midfielder Jordan Henderson.

Spurs are insistent that they want to keep all their key players and are resisting any offers for Chelsea target Luka Modric as well as PFA Player of the Year Gareth Bale. Spurs are also desperate to raise funds so Harry Redknapp can add reinforcements to his sqaud. Meaning Lennon could still be sold at the right price.

The wide man was one of Comolli’s first signings as Tottenham’s director of football in 2005 and Liverpool and Comoli will hope he can make history repeat itself.

Toulouse’s Moussa Sissoko dubbed as the next Patrick Vieira is also on the Liverpool radar however Newcastle United are also interested in the players services as well as former European Champions Inter and French giants Lyon.

The 21 year old midfielder is keen to make a high profile move and his agent insists he has a number of clubs fighting for the players attention. However Toulouse will not let their start go without a fight and are holding out for an offer of €15 million (£13.3m).

Are Liverpool looking at the right targets? Should the club switch its focus from midfield to other areas of the team? Is Comolli’s methodical approach to signing players a good tactic in the transfer market? Are the Reds paying the right amount for these players or is it too much?

Don't want Lennon or his eyebrows anywhere near Anfield myslef. Can't say I've seen a lot of Sissoko but the bits I've seen of him certainly do not lead me to believe he'll be any kind of replacement for Stevie. Looks more of a Viera type player only not as good.

Right midfield is covered with Kuyt and Henderson.

Worry about the left!

Liverpool will announce the £26million double signing of Blackpool captain Charlie Adam and Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing in the next 24 hours.

Liverpool director of football, Damien Comolli, was holding discussions with the Tangerines chairman Karl Oyston over a £10million deal for Adam.

The 25-year-old was the stand-out player for Blackpool despite their relegation last season and a deal is expected to be £8million plus add-ons, according to The Times.

The Reds had a £7million bid rejected in January but the Seasiders will cash in now on a player rather than let him leave for nothing in 12 months.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish wants to bring another left-footer to Anfield in Villa winger Downing.

The England international has rejected a new contract after concerns about the Midlands club not matching his ambitions.

A £16million deal is being discussed at boardroom level, with Downing ready to push the move through by handing in a transfer request.

The arrival of these two, added with the acquisition of Jordan Henderson from Sunderland, will create plenty of ambition in Liverpool’s midfield.

One member who may be moved on is the PFA fans player of the year, Raul Meireles, who is the subject of a £13million bid from Juventus

Sochaux midfielder Ryad Boudebouz has claimed that Liverpool have expressed an interest in taking him from Ligue 1 to Anfield this summer.

Kenny Dalglish is in the process of rebuilding his first-team squad at Anfield and has already spent big on Jordan Henderson to strengthen the midfield, with Blackpool playmaker Charlie Adam and Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing also heavily linked with a move to Merseyside.

Now 21-year-old Boudabouz, who played for Algeria against England in last year's World Cup, has suggested that Liverpool have been in contact, although he has no desire to force through a move.

"The Liverpool interest is solid," Boudebouz told L'Est Republicain.

"There has been contact but we have to take our time, meet the chairman and remain calm. I want to sit down and discuss things when we return for pre-season training.

"If there is an important offer, we will not be able to turn it down.

"I don't wish to leave Sochaux but if there is an offer on the table, I will think about it."

LOL.

"Sochaux lost both league games in 2010-11 without Marvin Martin or Ryad Boudebouz in their starting XI."

Wow, if these rumours are true then in 6 months we would have spent 80 million on Carol, Henderson, Adam and Downing. I don't know what to make of it yet...
One thing is for sure, would have loved to have seen us spend that money in few yrs ago after finishing second.

Make me wonder somewhat how we might've strengthened if Rafa had the cash to bring in his supposedly first choice targets. :-[

We'd have 48 goalkeepers then.

I thought the story about Maxi "pleading to leave" for Argentina, was rubbish ?

Hmmm... between the Summer we finished second and the Summer after, we spend £80m on Keane, Riera, Caviswathisface, Dossena, Johnson and Aquilani..

So maybe not.

Johnson was (imo) good value for money at least lol.

Two sides of the coin I supposed. I was thinking of the (rumoured) Dani Alves-es and how we would probably avoided those free transfer signings.

I personally hope that Kenny has a plan and will get behind everyone of the signings because the turn around he influenced last season has left me genuinely excited. However had this been hodgson and commolli splashing the cash on the signings like carroll, henderson and those we're being linked with we'd be all going nucking futs!!

That was never going to happen though, was it? FSG would never have given him that kind of money after seeing what an almighty mess he was making of the job.

Kenny's reputation and more importantly his recent achievement of turning Liverpool around have definitely earned him his faith from the Liverpool fans, but there's no denying that our targets are somewhat underwhelming. As ever, though, it's only fair to make any sort of assessment after the summer window, and then another one month into the season.

Whoever we sign, Kenny will get the best out of them.

Ah yeah....suppose it was a roundabout way of saying Kennys done to much for the club to be questioned over the transfers but any other manager would be declared bonkers for the transfer policy!
