Comolli: Liverpool sacked me because I 'wasted money' on Henderson

Former director of football says he always knew Reds captain would come good

Damien Comolli claims he was sacked by Liverpool’s owners because he had “wasted money” on buying Jordan Henderson.

The Frenchman was dismissed from his role as director of football in April 2012 with Fenway Sports Group unhappy about the return on their investment in the transfer market.
Comolli negotiated the £16million deal for Henderson with Sunderland, as well as the purchase of players like Stewart Downing (£20million), Andy Carroll (£35million) and Charlie Adam (£7million).
Henderson endured a tough start to his Liverpool career but has since gone on to flourish at Anfield.
Comolli believes the passage of time has proved that Henderson, who is now Reds captain and wearing the armband for England , was worth every penny.

“Henderson is one of the main reasons I got sacked,” he told talkSPORT.
“The day I got sacked they told me I had made a big mistake on Jordan and he was a waste of money.
“Everybody is entitled to their own opinion, but I think we paid the right price.

“he was a young English, British player and we know very often that British players are overvalued. But we were more than happy to pay the price because we thought he would become an outstanding player.

“I never said it publicly, but I was convinced he would be the future captain. People will say it is easy to say now, but I was convinced at the time that he would become the Liverpool captain. Now he is and he is also the England captain.”
Comolli added: “I was totally convinced, as was Kenny (Dalglish), that we were doing the right thing for the club.
“He fitted the profile we were looking for. We knew he was an outstanding person, we knew he had leadership skills, we knew he was totally dedicated to football, to his passion, and we knew he was someone who wanted to improve on a day to day basis.
“We knew his physical abilities - his fitness stats were absolutely unbelievable. We were looking at statistics and we were going through a lot of midfield players in the Premier League and what amazed me and caught my eye was his ability to create quality chances.”

He's a cunt. A massive whopper. But he appaz wanted Payet and Matuidi instead of us going for Downing and Adam. But Kenny wanted the two latter.
That would have been somewhat of a better deal......

Yeah, but it's pretty easy to look back at certain deals and say "I was right!" and then denounce others as not being your idea in the first place.

"Yeah, I proposed we buy Marco Van Basten but I was overruled by Souness, because he wanted Istvan Kozma"

Obviously, but did you honestly think Charlie Adam would be a good signing? Matuidi would have been a much better fit. Thats not even hindsight as Matuidi was extremely good for St Etienne.

I thought Downing would be much better than he was, but that was horrendously wrong.
Payet was an unknown then so that was probably extremely hard to call. He was available for around 7-9 mill though and not the 20 mill we paid for Downing.

I wouldn't say payet was unknown. He was getting hyped up, he was just inconsistent at the time

Yeah, and it's hardly like we can say "OMG! How did we miss out on Payet?"

Lille, Marseilles, West Ham

That's not a player ripping up the league and moving into the big time. He's 30 next year.

A bit of a cunty manoeuvre that, regardless of whether he is/was right .

Also, Henderson , at the time and at the price we paid was certainly a head scratcher , you could reinforce that with the fact that we only really got a decent return from 2013 onwards..

Old news now but when we bought him we expected a certain level from Hendo and he performed way below that. Also you can say he has flourished because of the coaching practices introduced by both rodgers and klopp. So in effect he was a bad buy then because for the price and our immediate need then he was the wrong player. Its no different than us selling Torres to Chelsea who went onto become a flopp for them under their coaches.

"I never said it publicly, but I was convinced he would be the future captain."

LOL'd at that bit.

Yeah, one of those lads what engages in self promotion to try and overlook certain flaws and issues with himself.

A bit like Roffa, but Roffa has somethings to crow about.

Anyone who thought Stewart Downing was going to be a good signing should take a year sabbatical from these boards (sorry lads). TO QUOTE The Donald, he's got a losing temperament.

It's like thinking Roy Hodgson was going to be a decent manager.

Downing is a good player.

Every year he seems to crop up out of the woodwork and claim credit for something, in fact I'm pretty damn sure last time he cropped up he took all the credit for Suarez and claimed that Kenny made him choose Henderson over Goetze, the guys a lying egotistical little snake.

Hendo is proving himself an excellent buy. I don't mind him pointing that out, given that his ex-employers sacked him. It's not going to change much, if anything, but he's perfectly entitled.

He did say an amazing thing in that interview.
He said he paid 1.5m more for him because Niall Quinn told him a story about when Henderson was playing for the reserves then manager Roy Keane asked the reserves after a match if any of them think they deserve to make the first team and Henderson said yes.

So if you want Comolli to pay more money for a player make up any old shit on the spot and he will buy it.

And I think the board were probably slightly more vexed about the 80m worth of signings of Carroll, Adam, Downing, Coates and Enrique rather than one of the two players who actually did some good for us.

I've got some sympathy for Comolli. He bought Suarez and Bale when others didn't, and he's due some credit for plumping for the current Liverpool and England captain.

I do suspect Dalglish had his fingerprints all over the Adam, Downing and Carroll singings - but Comolli didn't seemt o object, and I do remember him extolling the virtues of Bid Andy on many occasions.

Guys - go easy on him. Once you have been part of LFC and experienced the full package - it is hard for some people to let go. Look at Rafa - never moved out of the area, GH - had to visit the dressing room after the CL win, Kenny still around, - people don't leave and if they are kicked out they either remain bitter like that divorced man/woman who never wanted to get the divorce. We will get a lot of this, people love our club - they all want to be part of its history. Do I sound deluded ? - probably.

I think we got decent value for what we paid with Enrique.

Coates was Comolli's signing. He specifically targeted Uruguay as a new area for scouting, setting up an entirely new network of relationships with clubs there, and Coates came from the start of that.

Comolli: Liverpool sacked me because I 'wasted money' on Henderson

“The day I got sacked they told me I had made a big mistake on Jordan, Stewart, Andy & Charlie and they were a waste of money."
That's more likely what they said & they were 75% correct

[article]“When we signed Jordan Henderson, he got so much criticism, I got so much criticism,” he said.

“I was never told why I was sacked but I was led to believe it was because we signed Jordan Henderson, and the owners were convinced he was not good enough.”

So was he 'told' or 'never told'? 🙄
