Alex Ferguson labelled Manchester United’s game against Liverpool as the biggest club game in the world.
Bigger than Real Madrid v Barcelona and bigger than Inter v AC Milan.
Sportsmail looks at the global statistics that back up the Premier League’s international appeal.

Very surprised about the Barca v Real stats. Weird.

They should also talk about games like Boca vs River, which are just fucking mental.

That doesn't make sense.

Barca v Real is broadcast to 50 countries.
Liverpool v Utd 211 countries.

Barca v Real got 400m viewers.
We got 500m viewers.

So 161 countries we broadcast in have 100m viewers between them?

Seems highly unlikely.

Just realised it's fron the Daily Mail, so they probably just made the shit up as per.

It's a typo maybe? But I'm sure most of the countries tuned in already have a lot of fan base. Perhaps the rest of the countries are not as "well-to-do" thus the ratio of television to people is extremely lob sided.

So according to Daily Mail, the record for a Premier League game is between Arsenal and Manure with almost a billion viewers?

There are many reasons as to why Liverpool/United games attract higher global audiences than games featuring Barca/Real, Inter/AC, Roma/Lazio etc.

Firstly, the most obvious factor is that the Premier League is broadcasted to more countries than La Liga & Serie A. The EPL is far more globalised and fine tuned than the other mentioned leagues.

Secondly, a majority of the derbies in England are early or midday kick offs - which in Asia (who make up a large chunk of the global audience) translates to roughly 9pm-11pm kick offs depending on where you live in the Asia region.

In comparison, you look at derbies such as Inter/AC, Roma/Lazio, Barca/Real ... these games are always late kick offs on Sundays in Europe ... which usually means these games kick off somewhere between 3am-6am on a Monday morning in Asia - so you get a fraction of the potential market getting up to watch.

Furthermore, the EPL comes with the basic package for most cable providers in Asia ... but if you want to watch La Liga or Serie A - you then have to sign up to add ESPN or Setanta to your existing package ... and even then the quality of the video/audio feed is rubbish.
