I'm not gonna defend Dalglish's spendings, but your point about O'Neill could be applied to Dalglish last season, he came in and had a similar impact to the one O'Neill is having now. I like O'Neill alot, but there will come a point where they'll hit a brick wall.

I said last year we went on an excellent run and perhaps that was down to reduced expectations and and no pressure. when we had light pressure to win our final two games to secure a european place we lost. but I think this team is better than it is showing, at times this season the football has been absolutely excellent and for whatever reason, poor finishing, brilliant keeper, luck, we haven't managed to claim 3 points.

I definately think there is enough to build on and I do think kenny should be allowed to continue. kenny has a 3 year contract and should definately be allowed to serve another year of it.

It has been a very black January so far. The signs started allready during xmas period after what i think was a positive autumn. We had good passing, good movement and a hell of a lot of clear cut chances in most games over the autumn. Most of this dissapeared around the everlasting Suarez saga, and that fuckhead Evra and Fergie spoiled our momentum. We need to pick ourselves up as too many players underperform these days. Adam, kuyt and Downing being the main culprits, but too many are not contribtuing at all.

We need to balance the midfield,a nd Adam and Gerrard can not make out the cm against City. hendo seem to be the one who can put in half an energic shift in the deep role of those available, so he should start there together with one of the other two, and I of course prefer Gerrard even though he wouldprobably need a rest for one of the two "big" games this week. WHoever we choose there is no excuse for not breaking up the City play infront of the central defence.

Kuyt can maybe contribute in this game on the right. I dont expect him to help out going forward but at least he might do a job there. Maybe even put Johnson right midfield with Kelly in behind him (yeah I know how that sounds). For the left we can do something similar with Fabio and Jose maybe. But it doesnt smell attacking power. I would have played Shelvey as the man in behind a lone striker (Preferably Bellamy but he can also come handy against scum). Shelvey and Bellers can create some decent movement that actually stretches the city defence a little bit. Carrol is not capable of doing that, and it is too easy to defend against a static player like him. He would also need help from at least to busy bees around him and we cant afford that for this game.

Anyway, some players were warned by Kenny. it is about they give their Liverpool careers a decent go. For some it seem that the job was done when signing the contract. Fucking hell we have done some worrying moves in the transdfer market.

Bellamy is a big issue over the next seven days. After figuring for the full match against Bolton, we need him against Citeh and United, because we've got no other outlet, but I can't see him playing against both, so....

I was gutted about the fact that I'm supposed to be working on Wednesday night, I begged them to be on the agenda as early as possible so I could leave and catch the second half. Might be better off missing it

Ah come on. Semis a cold wed night is what this club is made for. Make sure to leave those freezing Citeh primadonnas even colder with your wholehearted support for the famous unbeatable redmen!!!

Any news on Spearing? I don't like the thought of playing these without someone sat doing the ugly side of the game in front of our back 4.

I like Modo's idea.

Play Aurelio, that guy who is known for his fitness ahead of Adam, based on the fact that Adam gets tired.

Its not a game that will be dominated of our pass and move. City will come all out on us and we need to be able to stop them. None of the mentioned is able to do that!

Can't see Spearing making it to be honest. Hamstring strains need to be managed carefully.
With that in mind, we're really struggling in centre midfield...Adam needs a good kick up the backside, but who would we bring in for him...the timid Henderson or the inexperienced and attack minded Shelvey? A real quandary.

It won't surprise any of us if we raise our game Wednesday night, but it'll merely paper over the cracks. If we can't beat the lesser teams what's the bloody point.
That said, lets hope we can bounce back.

City with no Balotelli or Kompany. Two big losses.

Unless Balotelli appeals of course.

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann believes winning the Carling Cup would represent a major step forward for his old club and put the Reds "back on the map".

Kenny Dalglish's team take a 1-0 lead into Wednesday's semi-final second leg at Anfield against Manchester City, another of the ex-Germany international's sides.

The Merseysiders have not won a trophy since their FA Cup final victory of 2006 and a draw in midweek would secure their first appearance at Wembley for 16 years.

Hamann knows how significant winning the Carling Cup can be – he was part of the side which beat Birmingham in Cardiff in 2001 on the way to a famous treble as Liverpool also lifted the UEFA Cup and FA Cup.

"I think it is very important for them because the club has not won a trophy for six years now and we all know what an impact it can have," the German, speaking about the Carling Cup at an event at Football League headquarters.

"In 2001 we got off on our way to a memorable season with the League Cup and I'm not sure whether we would have won the UEFA Cup or FA Cup finals had we not beaten Birmingham on penalties.

"To go to the final and win would be a major step forward for Liverpool.

"It puts them back on the map. We all know the longer you don't win the harder it gets the next year.

"A victory is very important because if breeds confidence and belief and faith in the other players and I think it gives them a better chance of finishing in the top four.

"They won't win the league this year because there are stronger teams but in cup competitions you only have to win six or seven games so that is why Dalglish has played strong sides.

"But other managers have identified that as well because if you look at the winners of the Carling Cup in the last few years apart from Birmingham they are all big teams.

"It is all about winning trophies and the Carling Cup was seen as the fourth cup a few seasons ago but has grown in importance the last few years."

A 3-1 league defeat at Bolton at the weekend was the worst possible preparation for Dalglish's side but they will have drawn some comfort from seeing City let slip a two-goal lead against Tottenham yesterday, even if they did snatch a late 3-2 win.

Roberto Mancini's side were poor in the first leg but Hamann does not expect to see a repeat performance, and believes Liverpool cannot afford to sit back and defend their lead.

"Liverpool have had six years to get a monkey off their back and they have a golden opportunity this year," added Hamann.

"They have put themselves in a great position with a 1-0 win in the first leg and they have every chance.

"It is a big game for Liverpool on Wednesday because I am not sure whether they can shut City out again.

"If Liverpool want to go through they have to score and this is where the problem lies because they find goals hard to come by at the moment.

"It will be a tight and interesting game but Liverpool are probably just marginal favourites because they won the first leg.

"And if they were to get to the final you would fancy them against a Championship side [Crystal Palace and Cardiff contest the other semi-final].

"It would do their confidence the world of good because it makes them believe more and if you have come out of a final successful it gives everyone an extra boost."

After leaving Liverpool Hamann moved down the M62 to City, where he played for three seasons.

He accepts that the Carling Cup won't be top of Mancini's priorities but expects to see City come out fighting on Wednesday.

"The league and the Carling Cup are their best two chances of winning trophies," he said.

"Last season they tasted success winning the FA Cup and once you have won one you want to win another and they will do everything they can to put another trophy in the cabinet.

"They are missing the Toures [Yaya and Kolo] and Vincent Kompany but I expect a strong team and performance.

"I was disappointed with them in the first leg but I don't think we will see as disappointing a performance as that again."

He has until Wednesday 6pm to lodge an appeal. I can't see him doing it though as he's very likely to end up with a longer ban.

I want to him play. A few meaty challenges, a bit of winding up about his crap haircut, and he'll lose it anyway. Ballotelli has been great for us any time we've faced City.

Yes, we could all do with a good long think about how shit our team is.

*puts on thinking cap*
[/quote]

Or about our manager...

Unless there is an improvement in the player's attitude and commitment I think we'll get a hiding.

The only things we've got going for us is the atmosphere, a slight advantage; and hopefully some players pride has been stung and they come out like they mean it.

The players owe Dalglish and his management team certainly and the fans definitely.

It is allways a question how to approach this game. Should we go out, sit thight and dep and try to kill of their attempts to go at us, or should we take controll and command the pace of the game to try to kill it ourself!

If we lay deep we will defo give them lots of set pieces and play in our half. Our defence has been weak on corners etc against City this season. It would also make it very difficult if we throw away our lead early. It is hard to change the attitude from defensivly minded to attack minded. However I am afraid KD will use Carra in fron of Skrtel and Agger to keep it thight. I also feel this will fail.

We should go out and take the game into their half. Keep the ball and let them do the running. We are out of form attackingwise, but in these games form should not count. Pure will should be able to up our game to the extent that we run that extra yard for reaching a final!

Its a good line up. I actually prefer Glen ahead of Kuyt out rigth as Glen has that little pace making him able to take onm a defender. When playing Kuyt out there, the opposition doesnt have to worry about being attacked from the right.

Carroll is useless when isolated on his own up there. To be honest we dont do him any favours by playing the way we do either. When he is there it seems like our game plan is to position one to send in a cross from a deep angle, and thats about it. No doubling up at the wings, no movement around him and noone to pick up whatever falls down either. And with him being as static as he is he will need a 100 attempts before he scores. How many has he got so far? seven or so?
