Delph is pretty good, I don't quite get the hate. He has mobility which is what our midfield often lacks (besides Hendo). But I'm not sure why some newspapers say he could be a replacement for Lucas – Delph is not really a DM, is he? More like another body in midfield to compensate for the loss of Gerrard. I'm guessing we'll either get him or Milner.

From what little I've seen of William Carvalho, he looks like a big, lazy lump of shit. I hope United get him.
Dont see the point in delph when we have Can.

We don't need a great deal of creativity from our DM, just someone to retain possession and play simple passes with our attackers. Positional discipline, and cover for our back line is prioritized given how aggressive our fullbacks/wingbacks are.

That's essentially why Lucas has improved us so much. He's not the sexiest player out there, but he fulfills his role well. The DM needs to be a cog for us, not a whole lot more.

I think Carvalho fulfills that description a bit more than Delph. He'll cost quite a lot more as well though, but I think at this stage it's one of those risks we need to take, as well as a statement of intent. But I do think he'll end up at Arsenal.

As Lucas and Rurik suggest Delph is more comparable with Hendo than with Lucas as he's not an out-and-out DM'er, he covers a lot of ground as is as effective defending as he is going forward i.e. not very. Villa paid £5m for Delph and I still think he was overpriced.

Delph has been quality for villa this season and far more talented than he has been credit for...

@Jay_78_ Interesting that #LFC are tonight being linked to William Carvalho

@MarkmaccaMc @DAVEPETHARD Oh I've been told that too, but Dave was told something interesting today on him.

After everything that happened with Rosco I understand the irony in this, but these two really are a bunch of bullshitting cunts.

If we went for Delph then he is another CM to go with Hendo and Allen, rather than a holding/ DM in my opinion. Could be a good addition if we plan to keep playing Can at the back but maybe less needed if we don't.

Delph in and Lucas out wouldn't be good news.

"Quality"? He's only started 8 league games of which they've won 1 (against us) drawn 2 and lost 5, scored no goals, got no assists and one red card! In his 8 games Villa have scored 2 goals and conceded 11.

Ouch.

Is Hmmmmm1 going to attempt to fight back or is he spark out on the floor with teeth trailing from his mouth in globules of blood and drool?

Delph dislocated his shoulder in October which required surgery, recently returned after 3 months out, which may explain why he started only 8 games 🙄

Edit: attack the post not the poster!

Stick to providing stats on random lower league players which no team ever signs.

But my point is; how can he have been "quality" in 8 games in which Villa have performed so badly?

Having lived/worked in that area, I do follow a lot of the teams in that area with Interest and he has played well, notably against scum and not just this season.

He is suffering from playing in poor team though has all the attributes to be a success here. As you mention he has a similar attributes to hendo so provides competitive cover for that position.

Fair enough, I was just surprised that you said he'd been quality this season. As it happens I disagree with you, I've seen him since his Leeds days and was amazed that Villa forked out £5m for him as he'd been distinctly average for Leeds in the 1st Division the previous season. I've seen him have one or two decent games for Villa since he signed but for me he's just another Chris Brunt, Tom Cleverly, Glen Whelan, Johnny Howson etc................i.e. capable of playing for a team in the bottom half of the EPL but wouldn't particularly stand out even in The Championship.

Just seen the "edit". Sorry if it looks like I was attacking you hmmmm but I was just juxtaposing your assertion that Delph had been "quality this season" with Delph's stats from this season, it wasn't personal.

Where are your stats coming from? According to these detailed stats on transfermarkt, he started in 10 games, they won 3 of them, drawn 3 and lost 4. His performances were good enough to get him an England call-up from a shite team.

Got them from soccerway.com which is usually accurate. They also said he'd played 10 games but 2 of them were for England.

Well, they are wrong. Or otherwise you'll have to prove to me that Delph didn't play for 90 minutes against Stoke and Hull in August, both games which Villa won, along with the game against us, and where Delph impressed enough to get the national team call-up.

http://uk.soccerway.com/players/fabian-delph/53097/ If you look at the page (at the bottom) where I got the information you can see why I thought he'd only played 8 games, I didn't notice the small "previous" link to the top right where they had the other 4 matches he played. Considering these games were against the mighty Hull City, Leyton Orient, Stoke and Newcastle and they lost to Orient and 0-0 at home to Newcastle it doesn't add much weight to the theory that he has played well this season.

Getting selected for England means NOTHING, other recent inclusions in the squad have been Colback, Shelvey, Andros Townsend, Cleverly and Phil Jones..........none of whom have shown anything approaching international quality.

Delph did play well against us this season but then again so did all 4 of the AFC Wimbledon midfield for long periods of the game.

He is another Tom Cleverly i.e. decent enough option for one of the lesser-lights of the EPL but won't improve us.

I think Delph probably falls into the category of player that would look exponentially better in a side that played decent football with a bit of confidence (ie us in the second half of last season rather than the first half of this). I think he's good at pressing, and recycles the ball decently enough.

My worry, as always, with this sort of signing is that it would preclude us from signing players of a higher quality that we actually need. Delph would fit in well with the need for our midfield to press, but his signing wouldn't mean we then didn't need a top class holding midfielder.

I think we should move away from caring how many games he did or did not play and just agree Delph isn't the answer for us?

Delph would be a good addition to the squad if he's replacing Allen. He has far more aggression and is technically good.

William Carvalho will be going to United, Arsenal or Chelsea .. they have all been interested in him and once he is on the market there will be a bloodbath for the potential 'next big thing'.
