First Spanish player to score double figures since Torres and Fabregas.

Costs only 2 Mil quid.

Better than your Hendersons, Carrolls and Allens. British players are overpriced and overrated.

Totally fed up with your Hendersons, Carrolls and Allens. British players are overpriced and overrated.

Very true, the english player premium is mental, considering how shit some of them like henderson and downing are.
Michu was a bit of a steal. I don't think Rayo would have let him go that cheap if they thought he was going to turn out this well.

We paid £6 million for Morientes who had better pedigree than this guy and that turned into a poor signing.

Sometimes these transfer work, sometimes they don't.

Who in their right mind (bar Comoli/Kenny) thought Carroll would provide value at that price.

Though, thanks for stating the obvious.

Will be interesting to see if he does in a 2nd season. Some of those superb Newcastle bargains are really struggling this season.

The latest flash in the pan striker to become the saviour of every other teams striking problems. He's more likely to be like Roque Santa Cruz next season.

The wrong players are always overpriced. Fuck all to do with the "English premium"

I think there is an obvious English premium, and I'm very sceptical about that report debunking it in the above link. Look at this graph from their site:

histogram+of+transfer+values+pl+2012+-+b.png

It shows more than one player 'valued' at higher than £40m, whereas there has (I think) been only one transfer above that price, namely Torres to Chelsea.

I can only assume they're basing their analysis, not on transfer prices, but on some subjective measure of 'value'. If that's what they've done then their whole argument is very obviously completely worthless.

I don't think anyone can establish an 'English premium', belief seems to be predicated on the exceptions i.e Carroll. Everybody remembers the stand out cases and make a whole load of assumptions based on it.

Beyond that, who cares anyway?

As regards Michu, I dare say he'll be getting a lot more attention in future and then we'll see.

It's actually quite easy to establish an 'English premium'. It applies to the English game in general as opposed to just English players and the reason it exists is because there is so much money in the English game. When players like Kieran Richardson are going for 6M (and thats going back a few years) I don't think you can argue that an argument is based on stand out cases.

Spanish teams are largely broke these days and even before didn't have as much money as English clubs so players are traded for less. The Brazilian game has a lot more money in it now and that's why you're seeing the likes of Neymar and Ganso still plying their trade there. A few years back they'd have been off quick sharp.

Are we ever gonna stop talking about the K F C(Kenny, Fenway, Comolli) transfer debacle?

I'm not sure you've easily established an 'English premium'.

I'm pretty sure Managers could find as good if not better players abroad for the same money or even less, so why pay a premium?

Obviously you wouldn't, so couldn't it just be that Managers chose players to fit their requirements regardless of nationality?

It wouldn't make sense to pay extra for a certain nationality when you have an open choice of equals, and I can't see a reason for buying British unless you think the price is value at the time.

I think you've misunderstood my post. I was suggesting that the 'English premium' applies to players in the English game regardless of nationality.

As for why managers would pay a premium for English talent, well, you could come up with a number of reasons. The most obvious one is the homegrown rule. Teams need English (trained) players and top quality is hard to come by so it pushes the price up across the board (in an already inflated market).

I don't know why clubs pay an English premium, but I'm convinced they do. I'm not sure if it's quite as marked as it used to be, but I'm sure it's still there. I suppose one major explanation would be that they believe in the importance of being premiership proven. Other possible reasons:

- The players are more visible/scouting is automatic/demand is pushed up.
- Homegrown, as Keni says
- Belief that English players will settle more easily, mesh better with the dressing room
- Belief that English players will be happy to stay long term and not get homesick.
