Multi-Club Ownership

Watching the Anfield Agenda...Who was reading the Athletic. It was believed FSG would look at the blueprint laid down by other clubs and follow it. So it would be a European club before going to South America.
I think it will be a Belgium Club as its a underperforming league which will merge with the Eredivisie to create huge growth. Who would you put your money on?

Money is on a Portuguese club, the Visa rules for overseas players are laxer than most other countries

Portuguese clubs are expensive though, no?

So what's the point of MCO's to the club? Revenue generators? Youth pipeline (which is already strong..)

What about an MCO in the US of A.

Yeah, most likely a Portuguese club. Easy way into the South American market.

Fluminese or Palmerias please. Or Santos. Or someone like Boca.

Basically any south American club. Cut the middle man bollocks out, let's be the first to do something for a change. I heard Spanish is virtually Linda's 2nd language.

In the Portuguese league, other than the Big 3, current 4th placed Braga and 5th placed Vitoria are owned/have minority investments from PSG & Aston Villa's owners respectively. 9th placed Boavista share the same owner as Bordeaux. 10th placed Famalicao (whom we previously loaned Beck) have a Israeli billionaire owner who owns a stake in Atletico Madrid. 11th placed Casa Pia are owned by the Platek family. 14th placed Rio Ave got taken over by Nottingham Forest's owner a few months ago. 15th placed Portimonense, who were targeted by Boley, rejected a £35m offer last year.

Unlike City Football Group or Todd Boley's ideas- where Man City and Chelsea are the clubs supplying/sending out players (both bought and from the academy) to the "smaller" sister clubs, I think the more feasible route is the Red Bull one - where's the clubs thrive in their own leagues and are no really "dependent" on the any other clubs within the network.

I think it will make more sense to buy a club that has potential to grow (factors incl. fan base, financial, infrastructure - esp. academy etc.) - a la how Bloom's takeover of Union SG awoke a sleeping giant (the third most successful club in Belgium languishing in lower leagues) or Red Bull transforming ex- SV Austria Salzburg from a midtable team to perennial title challengers or Ronaldo owned Cruzeiro's return to Brazilian top flight.

In this aspect, Santos FC who were relegated for the 1st time last year, in it's 111 year history, fits the bill. Maybe we can offer Beale, who had a coaching stint in Brazil with Sao Paulo, a job too. :p

Dated 2022: Brazilian football clubs open doors to foreign investors

Dated 2024: Brazilian football: the next frontier in global sport?

The catalyst for change in Brazilian football was a 2021 law encouraging clubs to operate as businesses, instead of the traditional model of non-profit associations. Previously, only two top-flight clubs were run as companies.

By creating a novel corporate structure that enjoys favourable tax rates, the legislation has opened the door to investors.

Textor was one of the new entrants to Brazil. His company also owns Olympique Lyonnais, Belgian team RWD Molenbeek and a minority stake in south London side Crystal Palace. In Botafogo, he found a club with a rich history — Mané Garrincha, one of the stars of the Brazil sides that won the 1958 and 1962 World Cups, played for the team in its heyday — but which had fallen on hard times in recent years. The club won promotion from the second division in 2021.

Shortly before Textor agreed the deal for Botafogo, former superstar and World Cup winner Ronaldo acquired a controlling stake in his boyhood club Cruzeiro.

Miami-based investment firm 777 Partners, which counts England’s Everton in its portfolio of teams, took a majority stake in Vasco da Gama
in Rio. Esporte Clube Bahia was bought by City Football Group, the Abu Dhabi-controlled owner of a dozen sides including Manchester City.

Richard Hughes started serving his notice in Nov 2023. Pedro Marques decision to leave Benfica was announced back in Jan 2024. Looks like Edwards might have been working on things for quite some time already.

=====

Dated 26 Jan 2024:

Benfica announced on Friday that it will make a change in the technical direction of youth football.

Pedro Marques, the technical director of youth football since 2018, will leave the club at the end of February, at his own request, ‘to take on an international project’.

‘He has contributed to the results that youth football has recently achieved, with particular emphasis on the promotion of several players to professional football,’ highlighted Benfica.

=====

Dated 2018:

After eight years in England, where he worked for Manchester City, Pedro Marques returns to Portugal to take office as technical director of SL Benfica, being in charge of the technical coordination of the youth football, including the B team and the transition process of youngsters to the professional football.

Graduated in Physical Education and Sports Science with a football specialization, and a Post-Graduation in High-Performance Training at Faculty of Human Kinetics in Lisbon, he began working at Sporting CP in 2004, as youth football coach. However, it was in the match analysis area that he stood out, moving to the first team, where he worked closely with Paulo Bento and Carlos Carvalhal.

In 2010, he moved to England to collaborate with Manchester City, where he worked with Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini,
contributing for the rise of the English club that, in four years, won all domestic trophies and secured regular presence in the Champions League.

During this period, he always kept the connection with the youth football, contributing to the redevelopment of the citizens' academy, the development of the current game model and training methodology.

More recently, from the 2014/15 season, with the launch of a new global strategy and the creation of the City Football Group, he began coordinating the expansion of the game model, the development of the training methodology e the performance analysis, not only in Manchester, with Pep Guardiola, but also with the other City clubs: New York City FC (United States of America), Melbourne City FC (Australia), Yokohama f. Marinos (Japan), Girona FC (Espanha) and CA Torque (Uruguay).

The experience accumulated by Pedro Marques will represent a huge added value to the development of young talents project that Benfica is involved for more than a decade.

Liverpool head of football operations Michael Edwards has reportedly opened talks with Toulouse over a deal that would see Fenway Sports Group acquire the Ligue 1 side as they look to build a multi-club network.

Edwards was announced as FSG’s new head of football earlier this month, and upon his appointment said one of the keys to his return – having previously operated as Liverpool’s sporting director – was the prospect of overseeing more than one club.

He said: “One of the biggest factors in my decision is the commitment to acquire and oversee an additional club. I believe that to remain competitive, investment and expansion of the current football portfolio is necessary.”

The multi-club model has become more and more popular among football owners in recent times, with 13 clubs now owned by the City Football Group, who have Manchester City as their flagship team, and Chelsea owners Clearlake Capital buying a majority stake in Strasbourg shortly after taking over at Stamford Bridge.

FSG have been on the lookout for clubs to add to their portfolio for some time, but Edwards’ arrival has kicked things up a notch according to Football Insider.

They claim Edwards has ‘held talks over a potential buyout’ of Toulouse, which should be amicable given the French club’s 85% owners RedBird Capital hold an 11% stake in FSG.

Damien Comolli, transfer chief at Anfield between 2010 and 2012, is the president of the French club after being appointed following RedBird’s takeover.

Toulouse, who returned to Ligue 1 in 2022, won the French Cup last season, earning them entry into the Europa League and games against Liverpool, and currently sit 11th in the top flight.

Comolli recruited Edwards and now Liverpool could be buying Comollis club at Edwards request. Interesting time line. The purchase would seemingly straightforward enough. I just would hope the French League provides enough of a platform for players to develop ready for the PL. I'm not sure if it carries the same visa/overseas working benefits as Portugal, which seems to have plenty of talent from South America and also have a recent history of players adapting quickly to the PL in.

I'm am forcing myself to give a shit. I'd hate to be a fan of one of these clubs knowing we're just a pawn for development and any lofty ambitions can be eradicated.

Mixed feelings about this.

Toulouse is 85% owned by Redbird so it's very low hanging fruit.

It's like marrying your cousin rather than that hot Latina girl with a Brazilian

I’m interested to know which club is the hot Latina girl in your metaphor

After Spurs and Liverpool, Comolli aiming to take Toulouse to top
Dated Nov 2023

Abstract touching on why Comolli recommended Toulouse "when RedBird Capital approached him in 2019 to say they were interested in buying a football club in Europe and wanted him to run it" -->

There is a joke among Toulouse supporters that the club only signs players they do not know, names they have never heard of. Comolli takes great pride in that. "Being data-driven is totally ingrained in our culture," he says.

In the ensuing 18 months after he was ousted at Liverpool, Comolli took between media pundit work, as well as other jobs in and around football, including a stint as sporting director at Fenerbahce as sporting director. This latest chapter at Toulouse began when RedBird Capital approached him in 2019 to say they were interested in buying a football club in Europe. More precisely, they wanted him to run it.

"Their message was very strong: We want to buy a football club and want to be data-driven. That is what I wanted as well," Comolli says.

Meetings ensued: first a dinner in London and then more around the Super Bowl in Miami, where two of the firm's execs, Gerry Cardinale and Alec Sheiner, handed him a file with the names and profiles of 70 clubs they had outlined as potential options. "There were a lot of discussions over clubs that we could have bought, including big European clubs," he says. Comolli flicked through until he landed on Toulouse.

"It ticked all the boxes," he says. The city is the third-youngest in Europe, had a great academy and great facilities. He even knew the local area: He was born just 100 miles to the east in Béziers.

Toulouse also fame itself as the side that once knocked out Diego Maradona's Napoli in the 1986 UEFA Cup first round and as recently as 2008 played in the Champions League, but by 2020 had been sent down to Ligue 2 after years of flirting with relegation.
RedBird Capital completed their takeover of the club in the first days of the coronavirus pandemic.

What if the hot latina has a penis?

Whats the purchase price of Toulouse? It has to be more than £80m, £100m?
Also, with Klopp's era coming to an end, is this now the end of eye-test and gut feeling?

Every smalll club price is going to be inflated like a crypto ready for a pump at this rate.
