With the concerning stories regarding Gerrard's abilty to return and Carragher's powers on the wane therefore perhaps not being as regular a starter in the coming seasons, who are the candidates for the arm band?

For his character, personality and leadership, Reina is an obvious candidate however an outfield player is usually preferable.

Who else might stake a claim for the captaincy in the coming years?

I agree with you Wilko. Pepe seems the best candidate but I'm not sure a goalie is best suited to the role. If were looking at Gerrard hanging his boots up in a couple of years and the lad progresses as he has, I'd go for Kelly.

1) reina
2) suarez
3) Lucas (expects backlash)
4) agger/skrtel

Kuyt is 30+ himself so i didn't include him for that reason

Kelly isn't even in the starting line up, should be Suarez.

Although Reina is the obvious choice. I do want the captain to be an outfield player.
Suarez together with Gerrard, Kuyt and Meireles seem to be the only game winners in the squad.

If the captaincy issue is a couple of years away then Adam may have put himself in the frame.

Agree with the suggestions of Suarez.

i think Lucas would be a very entertaining choice.

of the others i'd go for suarez - providing his english is up to it - slightly ahead of kuyt, just because he's a bit more of a guaranteed starter.

That's why I said if it's years down the line.

Am I the only person who thinks Flanagan looks an even better prospect than Kelly? Certainly defensively anyway.

Anyway:

Reina
Suarez

Don't see Kelly reaching the heights of Owen, Fowler, Gerrard etc.
Might become a decent RB/CB though.

You don't have to be at the height of those to be a captain. And the fact two of the three you've named weren't captains sort of confuses the point you're trying to make. Could Kelly end up being as good as Carra? Maybe. Would Carra have been the long term captain if we never had Gerrard? Definitely.

I'm dead against goalies as captains so I'd go with Adam if we're talking 1-2 years down the line or Kelly if we're talking longer term. Oh and by then, Kelly will be our first choice CB.

I really like Kelly as a player, but it's hard to tell as yet if he's really captain material. He looks a bit passive and gormless, certainly off the pitch. Anyone know what sort of personality he has? You really need an extrovert for a captain, which is partly why Stevie has never been quite as good in the role as he could have been. A great great player, but not a great captain.

Reina would have been a shoo-in until his flirtation with Man Utd. Right now, I don't know who I'd go for. On personality alone, probably Kuyt, but as has been said, should he even be in the team? Tricky one. But I think Carra will feature in most of our games this season, so if Gerrard's injured, Carra will be our captain. Beyond that ... I don't know.

[/quote] Fowler was our captain during the treble season.
Probably wasn't clear enough but I want the captain to be a game decider as well.
A game decider for me doesn't explicitly mean that he has to score, it means that his performances has a great influence in the results.
Interesting that you brought up Carra, he's won us a couple of games thanks to his never die attitude.

Btw, I'm pretty sure Owen captained a few games as well, not 100% sure though.

You need outfield leaders and those will be the experienced strong personalties .... whether they are captain or not. It has to be Pepe.

this is tough, so id have to say reina, although if we're losing itl be nigh on impossible for him to motivate the team to get goals. im not too keen on suarez being captain, although he's a great player i dont think that should matter in regards to picking the captain. id actually like to see carroll as captain at some point if he puts the work rate in, he's seems to be well liked by everyone, and he seems like the kind of guy you'd pay attention to

Everybody had a go at being captain during the second treble season!

Redknapp was officially our captain during that season, but he was injured.
So Hyypia and Fowler shared the captaincy if I remember it correctly.

I was wrong about Owen though.

feel bad for pepe, as he's being discounted. Yes goalies aren't stereotypically great orators or captains, but by fuck, you only need to look at how he commands everyone and bollocks people. When someone should have been sent off against us last season (the ref booked the wrong player), pepe ran the entire length of the pitch to remonstrate. That is passion and love for the win. He would take no shit and get the team pumped. He can dish out praise and can be a friend to everyone.

Yes keepers don't make great captains generally, but not all keepers are like pepe reina

Each to their own but i don't think Kelly will ever be Captain material. He's too quiet.

Fowler was brought into the captaincy-stakes to give him more responsibility. As for being wrong about Owen, we've all been guilty of that from time to time.

hes too unassuming

think robinson has the makings of a captain. Disciplined and not afraid to talk back

Although I'm not keen on goalies as captains, many have actualy lifted trophies...Zoff, Buffon, Khan, Schmeichel, Casillas...

Fowler was Redknapp's vice-captain. Sami stood in when neither was playing, which was quite often.

depends if he makes the step up. i know its early thus far but i'd be very surprised if robinson wasn't our starting full back in 2 years. Coady i wouldn't be surprised if he had a spearing style development

I don't think we've ever had a keeper as captain. Certainly not as official captain anyway
