The Dutch flag was originally orange, white and blue. Because of the inadequacies of the orange dyes then available, the orange band always faded, and so it was changed to red.
The colour orange was named after the House of Orange, and not the other way round.
I thought the name for the colour orange came from the Spanish name for the fruit - naranja, which became norange, which then became orange. "A norange" became "an orange" in the same way "a nadder" became "an adder" and "a napron" became "an apron".
