Watching the Sunderland game again there was a lot of talk of how nervous the team was in getting over the line. Whilst watching the game live that is the impression I got, however, in actual fact on second viewing the players were calm ( although we made a few mistakes ) and purposeful and it was my anxiety imprinted . The atmosphere at the beginning of the Tottenham game was spinetingling even through the tv and it seemed to affect the Spurs players who started the game very slowly. Again a strong purposeful well drilled performance from us, but again no panic under pressure, no nerves.

Of course the players are confident, playing well and are executing the managers tactics perfectly. However on a second more dispassionate viewing they seem to be playing without fear. Is this where Dr Steve Peters comes in? If he is not the missing link he must be part of it, we have been on an upward tradjectory since he became available to us at the beginning of last year. Now he has been hired by Hodgepodge is it time to tie him to some sort of exclusivity deal so other teams cannot benefit from his influence?

It seems this Dr Peters guy has replaced Steve Clarke as our behind the scenes voodoo man that makes everything work.

When did this guy come in and why is everyone going on about him all the time?

This should not be spoken about until 30 years time after decades of domination so that no team poaches him

Cos he has a quite incredible record considering how little time (relatively speaking) he has been doing it.

Practically everyone he's worked with has improved since he's worked with them & all speak glowingly. Fuck, even Ronnie O'Sullivan waxes lyrical about him, & I doubt that man has a good word to say about his own mother.

What have our players had to say about him?

Yeah, stevie's said tonnes of nice stuff about him, some of it unprompted. He was asked about his penalties & said he put his improvement in them entirely down to Peters.

Let's face it, if anyone needs the likes of a sports psychologist, it's our Steven! Whilst he's always had an incredible big game mentality he often played like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders & a smile was rarer than a Carra goal.

Peters also eluded to having sit down talks with Sturridge & Suárez to help them work together more effectively & reduce on the pitch friction.

I always thought it was off the back of Gerard's independent work with him that the club got involved with him?

I know he denies that in that video but . . .

He denies that's why Hodgson brought him for the world cup. Rodgers said 'senior players' recommended Peters to him as well as people from other sports.

FFF - you watch the games more than once. You must have noticed how much calmer the players appear when you are watching knowing the result. We seem to exude a confidence and lack of pressure in our play, obviously most of this is down to Rodgers, but some of this is in the mind and this must be where Dr Peters comes in. Possibly a masterstroke getting him involved, I think we should handcuff him to the club!

I don't think it's just that, it's a combination of training to play at all costs, like Skrtel holding the ball until two players are drawn in before releasing it, & that psychology that if they play their own game instead of forcing the play it will eventually pay off.

We don't panic, we just keep on going & maybe push a little harder in small increments.

It's actually almost identical to what Utd did for years, the pressure ratchets up for the opposition & they crack. We did it almost textbook at old Trafford. They actually defended quite well, but we kept the ball in the box without forcing it & in turn forced them to panic & make mistakes.

That's why the Liverpool of old got more pens than other sides & that's why Utd did too.

The key to it is indeed staying calm, & I think Peters is a massive part in that belief that it will work, enabling them to do so.

Agreed, although the point I was making is that when I was first watching Skirtel holding the ball as you say in my head I am saying JUST FOOKING HOOF THE THING!! The second time you can see he is completely in control.

I think all the talk in the media of how we won't be able to mentally handle the pressure of the run in is bollocks, we quite plainly can. We may not win but I think we are mentally prepared to win if that makes sense.

Rodgers has never hidden his awe for Gerrard, so I'm sure a Gerrard recommendation would hold plenty of clout

Oh yeah, my entire being is screaming 'empty it', & I bet part of him is too!

But he doesn't, & he is in control. And more than that, it works, it creates loads of space for the midfield to exploit.

The Sunderland game at the end was a great example. I was shitting myself, but watch it back & the players weren't, the sat further back but they didn't randomly hoof it.

Whilst we're talking about skittles , did anyone see that outrageous 30 yarder* he made against spurs to Suarez I think it was ?

Yeah the Sunderland game was unbearable after they scored, but on second viewing we by and large closed the game out calmly and professionally almost a nerveless display from the players .

I think I ought to give Dr Peters a call - my heart cannot take much more of this!
