Our shite midfield

It needs a drastic revamp, doesn't it? Spearing and Henderson starting an FA Cup final? Horrendous.

So, let's look at the options. If we're going to make a go of a potential Carroll/Suarez partnership how will we line up next year?

Central Midfield:

Gerrard: He's past his best. No longer able to dominate and inspire through sheer dynamism in a midfield two, he's becoming something of a difficult player to place. Right midfield with licence to drift in/drift wide and fire in crosses for Carroll? I don't think we can build a team around him any more.

Spearing: I've always wanted him to do well and championed him on here for a long time whilst in the reserves. But he's just not good enough, tidy wee player but not athletic/creative/dominant enough for a top club. He cost us today and simply hasn't done enough over the season to have any hope that he's the future of our club.

Henderson: Frustrating. At times, he looks as if he has the tools if he'd just take a chance here and there, but ultimately he's flattered to deceive throughout the season. A good engine and touch, but little creative flair or intent and little evidence of belief in himself to take any game (let alone a cup final) by the scruff of the neck. 16m? Fuck me.

Adam: Shone in a struggling side last year, but crucially as part of a midfield three playing a quarterback role. A good start to the season but his limitations soon became apparent and it seemed the more he pushed himself to make the grade, the more desperate and less disciplined his game became. A squad option, no more.

Lucas: My God we've missed him, but who knows how long it'll be before he recovers his excellent form before injury. Hopefully a definite and worthy starter for next season.

The Wings/Flanks:

Downing; Really fucking frustrating. He doesn;t believe he's a top player does he, so why should we? 20m? Kenny's had an absolute nightmare with Stewart. Average pace, creativity, crossing ability, shooting ability etc etc Mr percentage ball, should be at Villa or the like.

Kuyt: Likely gone in the summer and probably the best move for both parties.

Sterling: Would like to see more of this young lad. Pace, trickery and and excellent cross on him. He'll not be ready to start every game next year but certainly a viable option from what I've seen.

Maxi: Seemingly underused this year but likely to move on given his age and lack of playing time.

Bellamy: An excellent squad player, we simply can't rely on him to play most games next year.

So, who do we need? I reckon 2 central midfielders and at least one winger. Any ideas?

We need one central/defensive midfielder, one striker, one winger and one attacking midfielder.
If I'm gonna use names.
* Martinez - CM
* Belhanda - AM
* Jovetic - Striker
* Gaston Ramirez - Winger

There now we're sorted.

Are you guys realising that we only have two real strikers?

cant believe we bought so many centre mids in the summer and we're probably worse off for it, its absurd

Choices we make in the transfer window should based very carefully on the kind of formation/philosophy we want to deploy. That's the absolute first step in getting personnel right. Part of the reason we got it badly wrong last window was because I suspect (on the evidence of the tactics this season) there was no fixed notion in the management's head about how they wanted the team to be set up.

That said, while the lack of quality is obviously an issue, every player we currently have in midfield can be at least be a contributor if coached right, and played in the right set-up. Right now, it looks much worse than it is because they're just being out together haphazardly, and it's a right mess.

Since we aren't likely to blessed with a lot of funds, I'd focus on filling the squad out with two top class attacking players, and rely on good coaching, and the right system to get our midfield right. If we have the funds to buy an Alonso and a Mascherano, then nothing like it, but the focus really needs to be on adding serious quality to our attack.

I'd love to know why a centre midfielder wasn't bought in January when we knew Lucas would be out for the season. Even a player on loan.

Did i say they didn't try?

We had a full month to get one and didn't, and it's cost us big time.
To me your initial post suggested that we didn't try and it was a criticism of this,
Perhaps I was wrong.
Who knows what is happening at LFC?
Not me for sure and not ninty nine point nine percent of the journalists that write about it.

Fair enough. Whether we did or didn't try to get one, fact is no-one was signed in that area and it's hindered us.

Lucas
Gerrard
Adam
Henderson
Cole
Aquilani
MARTINEZ - 20m

Munain - 20m
Bellamy
Sterling
Hoillet
Downing

Looks like maxi and kuyt are gone

I think the problem is Henderson - does too little and looks a bit clueless at times. As for Downing - I think he has played well for us this season, what I find odd is that he is reluctant to take people on at times which he can do quite well as proved today, and he can cross the ball. When he does what he is capable of - he is the right player for us and a first teamer. I actually believe Kenny when he said he is better than what he thought he was. I also say this without any shame - I think he is a very good player.

it's nice to hear someone agree with me about Downing. Yes, he didn't get off to the best of starts, but he's coming to now. Couple of goals and assists this season too (albeit in cup games). He was one of our best players today.

"our shite midfield".....is here to stay !

i'd be surprised if we make too many changes to the team in the summer , these fuckwits were bought for the long term and we'll probably have to suffer them for a while longer .

I forgot about Aquilani (I wonder why?).

Maybe it's a case of bringing him back and splashing the cash on one superstar CM and one winger?
