Philips leaving?

Naldini is forever a cult hero, but is he fuck worth what some of you are saying. This time last year people would have bitten the hand off someone offering 10mil
I think the later is true - but that is before he proved how good he really is. Superb last season and looked no less when he's played this season. He's clearly worth more than £15m IMHO, especially with being English.

Plus the £15m price tag is probably a bit of a thank you to Nat as he will have more suitors to pick from and has the opportunity to negotiate a better contract consequently.

English tax.
Isn't relevant for players of a certain ability level or clubs of a certain level..top tier clubs need it because we heavily invest in better players from abroad, so a decent player who's English is very important. Burnley with a team of 12 home grown players it's not a factor

that's a good shout

& Who's paying us 30-40m for Gomez given how much football he's missed over the last 18 months?

I think if we can get 20m for Phillips that'd be good business seeing as we were ready to let him leave on a free 12 months ago.
I never mentioned a valuation. Would he fetch more than Nats? If so, why wouldn't you sell him over Nats?

Because we need four CBs and, though you may not agree, the club think (rightly in my view) that Gomez is good enough to be one of them.

This time last year we all thought a couple of central midfielders were better than a Phillips and ANother at the back. Boy, were we wrong!

There is a fair chance that the asking price was agreed when he signed his new deal last summer. It sounds very much like he was kept on as insurance against another defensive injury crisis with no guarantees that he would be playing, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if he did so with the agreement that he could leave in January if not needed. Attaching a price to that agreement wouldn’t be much of a stretch.

I personally think it is a good price for anyone who signs him, as I think he is a good player. But it isn’t a complete steal. On balance, it is pretty fair.

But but but...

Nats the specialist goto guy for us:

"Whenever there is a crisis at LFC, and no main defender is standing, only one man can rescue us...Nat Philips. "

We need 5 defenders, this club needs it badly.

I get where you're coming from, Dan, but the Arse not only are serial overpayers but also were in desperate need of something approximating to a centre-back. Ideally we'd want more for Nat but, as I said, I suspect the fee we've set is a conscious (if slight) undervaluation to make it easier for him to find the right move.
I can’t argue with any of that to be fair…

…but there’s sides out there with various circumstances (including Newcastle in big trouble and ready to flex their financial muscle / West Ham with a CB crisis and risking their European hopes facing / etc) that also invite inflated bids.

So, given his near faultless performances in our late season push last season, under immense pressure and alongside a super raw19 year old, I’d say that the club would be very fair to him in making clear he’s at 25m + player for January suitors.

I’d still rather keep him as 4th choice.

Folks... it’s time to face some truths here.

We’re getting fuck all for Big Nat - especially as he died from the ‘Rona last week.

Big Nat was laid to rest alongside the latest Thiago clone and this season’s Big Virg - the one we made out of body parts harvested from Ben Davies.

We should also mourn Lord Divock, who simply ascended to a higher plane of existence.

I’m hopeful we might sign some body parts next month.

Even if they had a prior agreement with him I doubt he'd be averse if they e.g. suggested we increase the asking price (based on his performances last season and this and on available bidders) and then paid him a leaving bonus based on the extra fee garnered (e.g. £100,000 for extra £1m above any figure already agreed with him).

Wouldn't disagree. I think Gomez' potential ceiling is higher but it's counterbalanced by his fitness issues.

As long as we don't end up selling both then I could deal with either of them leaving.

Happy enough if both stayed as well for the record, but can't see that.

How have people already forgotten how good Gomez is. The guy played the bulk of our title winning season and people act like he's some acrub from the reserves we should be trying to offload.

Just to add, Gomez also really stepped up when VVD was injured. It wasn't until Gomez also went down that our results nosedived. Until then the results were consistently good and we were top of the league. That period should be enough to make those who believe Gomez just rides the coattails of VVD to think again, IMO.

However, he is injury prone and injures take their toll on players. Nat is a big reason why we finished 3rd, and given the choice between Nat and Gomez, I'd keep Nats.
