I was reading the David Bentley's wiki page and he retired from football because he could not find a club. At one point in his career he was being labled the 'next David Beckham'.
Neil Webb who's peers would include Mark Hughes and Steve Bruce after leaving football became a postman and further supplemented his income by selling programs for Reading Football Club. Who else from football has fallen from a high?

Keith Gillespie. Flat broke, I believe. Last seen playing for Longford Town.

Michael Johnson
Pascal Chimbonda just stopped flapping his wings one day and plummeted down the leagues

Mendieta - from CL finals and a frankly outrageous transfer fee for the time to... a shit Middlesborough. Ouch. He's always the first one that comes to mind for me.

Vicente - another former Valencia man and another career ruined by injuries. Shame to end up in the Championship or wherever he is now.

Adriano - there was that one season where he looked like he was going to really take it to the next level Ronaldo style and then his career just collapsed. Was it mental health issues following the death of his father? Spent the last several years picking up a paycheck at various S.American clubs and not playing very much.

Pato - darling of Milan and future of Brazilian football.. to... the Sao Paulo bench. Time is running out for him.

Bridges was in oz until injuries ended his career, he's still out there I helieve.

Chimbonda was at carlisle last season after originally turning out for a non league team in the pre season 2013/14

Danny Cadamarteri, hyped right up when he broke through at Everton, they thought he was their answer to Owen, a bit like they thought Jelavic was to Suarez, lol.

Never scored many goals and soon disappeared, i always remember him for having his shirt nearly ripped clean off by one of our defenders in a derby game.

You could probably just go ahead and name half the players Real Madrid and Barcelona have signed over the last however many years. Their transfer history is littered with players who had big futures only to end up with disappointing pasts.

remember christopher Wreh ? didn't he start a FA cup final for arsenal and then within 4 or 5 yrs (while still young enough ) was playing 12 or 13 leagues below .

Taking a slightly different tangent here... Nani.

How somebody as talented as him (and make no mistake he's a superbly gifted footballer) couldn't get in that United side at the weekend ahead of those fucking kippers Van Gall selected is an indictment on him. He's pretty much sat on the bench for 2-3 years at United now, whilst players with far less ability - Valencia, Giggs, Wellbeck, etc have played ahead of him.

He'll be sold soon enough to some makeweight Italian side no doubt for 7M and will end up dwindling around blaming everyone but himself.

Wonderful footballer if he wanted, waste of time for the most part.

One of the prime examples of too much money and praise coming too soon, I think.

Remember seeing him with hi mates stood around a horrible pink BMW on Allerron Road looking like a tit one evening only several months after his debut, wondering what he was doing out on a Friday evening.

Bridges is a good bloke. Played in the A-League a bit and is now doing some media work for Fox Sports in Sydney. May have even got his Australian citizenship last year? Can't quite remember.
Speaking of wasted talent, Giles Barnes. Hyped up massively, now plays in for Houston in the MLS.
