We're going to get kicked from pillar to post out there. Perhaps we want to protect Chiesa especially from that, given his recent fitness struggles and his growing importance in the first team set-up.

He played 30 mins against Palace and scored a goal. How is travelling to Turkey and sitting on the bench, maybe coming on for 15 mins going to hurt him?
There is no way in hell Chiesa is starting against Chelsea.

Hear what you're saying, but the shithousery we're going to face in Turkey will be on another level entirely. I suspect you're probably right about the Chelsea game and as it happens I don't think Chiesa would have been likely to start against Gala either, but I haven't seen any other remotely plausible suggestion why he's not even in the squad.

This is a weird hill for Slot to die on, but die he must. It took longer than expected but here we are. Someone pass me the grenade.
Grenade? Henry should get Chiesa to tie him to a chair and make him watch clips of Gakpo and Salah cutting inside on repeat forever, until he dies from the madness.

I don't get it. Surely there must be a more substantive reason for his absence than a personality clash with Slot.

I do think there's probably fitness issues.

By that I mean his pointy-elbowed wife is only an Instagram model. It's hard for us to understand, but for men like slot and Athens, who are anointed with oils every morning by tiers of women that we can scarcely imagine, it's exhausting. How can they respect a person who doesn't respect themselves?

Wait… what does Slot’s missus look like!!!
Like she should be his mum!

Is it standard to take 3 keepers? To cover you if one gets injured and then you've got no-one to stick on the bench?

That said, I think if Slot is choosing to die on the Chiesa hill, so are some of the fans.

Is this mainly a result of us having so few homegrown players? 21 seems like a strange squad size - is that the limit or could it be bigger if we had more homegrown guys to include?

I just wonder because the three most obvious candidates to be replaced - Ngumoha, Woodman, and Frimpong - are all homegrown so wouldn't necessarily free up a space for Chiesa.

Ngumoha doesn't count as homegrown, hence why he was picked over Chiesa the first time around.

It’s crazy because we can name 23 players for the actual game.

Before each match, each team must confirm, using the match sheet, the 23 players in the team and up to 15 team officials, one of whom must be a team doctor.

I think it is a rule rather than a choice of the manager

I don't think that's right is it? Isn't he association trained? Appaz you can have 4 of those of the 8. I'm loath to go into it cos the rules are so fucking complicated and tedious. Although I can't find anything on the net about actual matchday squads having additional restrictions - I'd be surprised because that would mean he's literally been left out for no good reason, ie he could've gone but they just chose not to take him.

All I can find it the list of 23 to be given to the match officials.

I've noticed a lot of clubs putting 2 keepers on the bench, but that isn't a requirement. Suspect a lot of teams are taking three keepers to games, using the third keeper to go in nets for shooting practice and then they figure they might as well put him on the bench. But they could theoretically put 12 outfield players on the bench if they wanted to, or at least that's how I read the rules.

No, he has to have spent at least 2 years at LFC under the age of 21 to qualify for List B (association trained spot), so he will potentially become a List B player for season 2027-28.
From 2028-29, he'd qualify for one of the home club-trained spots.
By contrast, Romeu Lavia is treated as home grown (association trained) for Chelsea from this season as he's been there 2 years and was with Southampton before that.

I think this is what you've seen, and that's it for what happens on MatchDay. The stuff about List A and B is articles 30-32.

Article 55 Match sheet

55.01
Before each match, each team must confirm, using the match sheet, the 23 players in the team and up to 15 team officials, one of whom must be a team doctor. The match sheet must indicate the number and, if applicable, the shirt name that each player will wear during the match.

55.02
The players indicated on the match sheet as forming the starting 11 commence the match, and the goalkeeper and team captain must be identified among these players. All other players listed on the match sheet are designated as substitutes.

55.03
If there are fewer than seven players on either team, the match is cancelled or suspended.

55.04
Each team must have its match sheet submitted by its competent club official at least 75 minutes before kick-off. The match sheets are automatically exchanged no earlier than 75 minutes before kick-off.

I was just talking about the List A rules. He's homegrown for that, albeit association trained.

OK. A restriction still applies. In order for Rio to take up an association trained place, he'd need to have been registered for 3 years between the ages of 15 and 21 with either LFC or another club from the same association. Obviously Chelsea qualify for that but the issue is that he's not old enough to meet that requirement, although I think he will qualify next year as we can count the season in which he turned 15 (as he turned 15 during the 2023-24 season) and then the two seasons after that (2024-25 and 2025-26).
So the net impact this year is that he'd have to taken one of the unrestricted places in the List A, which basically meant one fewer foreign player, with Chiesa being the one to miss out, until Leoni's injury.

Rule:
An "association-trained player" is a player who, between the ages of 15 (or the start of the season during which the player turns 15) and 21 (or the end of the season during which the player turns 21), and irrespective of the player's nationality and age, has been registered with a club or with other clubs affiliated to the same association as that of the player's current club for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons...or of 36 months
