Pre Match Pre Match - Palace - (Anfield South) - Sunday - 15:00

Hang on, at the risk of going full Dreamy, wasn't Mo's penalty record 100% last season? He's missed a couple in meaningless friendlies and you want to sack him?

I think it's clear after today that Salah is simply unable to keep his penalties under the bar these days.

The evidence is simply overwhelming. Time catches up with us all.

I won't panic just yet. You could tell we are still work in progress, especially on the right. Salah was royally bypassed. Frimpong and Wirtz have an annoying habit of passing to each other ignoring others. Hopefully that will change.

Up front the lack of backup is slightly worrying though. We need another forward or 2. Just fuck Chiesa off if he is not going to play a single minute even after a full pre season. We literally have no one else and he still doesn't get minutes.

In midfield i think we are good. However, Jones is just not very good. Neither is Harvey.

In defense we definitely need Guehi, he was very good today.

I always said that about Diaz. People are hyper focused on stats, assists etc. Imo half the job of a winger is to just dribble and pull defences out of position.
Diaz can work pressed against the line and gakpo cannot. Diaz got the ball in the same positions gakpo did today, and instead of passing the ball backwards, he ended up near the corner and we were out. Now we have to tippy happy it there. Neat if it works.

The main flaw with this team is it tries to turn and play a lot which is neat, but when it doesn't work and we lose the ball it's a very dangerous transition against us because we lose the ball centrally. Obviously that's better with gravy playing.

We have spent a lot of money to attempt to get marginally better at the technical stuff and done nothing to address the other stuff.

We'll get Isak and a CB and that'll be that and that'll be fine.

Rio and Wirtz can help cover the LW spot. Frimpong can help cover RW.

DM is a bit tricky cos ideally we'd have more credible cover for Grav than Endo but it's not that clear who that would be. There aren't that many players out there like him. Bajcetic would seem to suit that but fuck knows what's going on with him.
Move Macca into Gravy's slot, when he needs a rest, and play Szobo+Wirtz ahead of him.

Anyway Diaz is gone. Like I mentioned before, Diaz was on the pitch against Newcastle, PSG x 2 and Plymouth. If his job is not to provide goals and assists but to pull defense out of position or whatever, he didn't do that great of a job in those games as well.

Get over it.

Macca can play there, but for the teams that primarily counter, Macca is too slow. I think Macca could do well against possession-based teams like Arse and City, but I doubt we would rotate Gravy for those.

Although, in general, we need to prevent more counter-attacks this season before they start by not giving the ball away in stupid positions.

The winners of this meaningless trophy has gone to win the PL title twice in 11 years. When we won it we came fifth in the season that followed. So I am happy we lost only on penalties

The second half was extremely disappointing as we completely lost our flow.

Taking Ekitike off for Endo was in my opinion a big mistake. Salah and VVD were poor all game which was the real frustration and Mac Allister was well off it too.

I think Slot tried to hold on for the win when what we really needed was a second wind to push on. This game was there for the taking but the core group let us down today.

Taking Ekitike off for Endo was a big error, IMHO. Salah and VVD were shit all game, which was the real tragedy.

I think Slot tried to hold onto the win when we needed a second wind to go again.

Ekitike was subbed because of managing his minutes. Maybe Chiesa would have been a better replacement in hindsight.

Agree. I think the real game changer was losing Wirtz in midfield. He was key to our flow until that sub.

DIaz was our most significant decision in terms of the outgoings once we decided to renew Salahs contract.

To not talk about him in the context of our new look attack would be truly odd.

We wouldn’t have been worse sticking mad wee Ben and Rio on for Salah and Gakpo. The lack of movement from the bench with our worst forwards staying on was crap. I really hope that’s not indicative of this coming season.

Van Dijk get a small pass because he had the shits last week and may not be 100%.

Kerkez looked all over the shop in a tactical sense. I think Robbo will be first choice until we get to two games in a week then he will be managed. Playing in 5 days when something on the line meant Robbo didn’t start today.

The rest of the new boys were proper sound.

Slot sounded concerned about the ease with which we are conceding goals in preseason.

Been the same since Milan 3 weeks ago, if only the window was open that would enable us to address those concerns.

Why are we so allergic to signing defensive players?

Mo has changed his pen technique hasn't he? previous miss almost looked like a panenka. he has always been a dubious penalty taker but when he was confident that was 90% of the battle even if all he did was smash the ball.

i don't know what he'd doing currently, short run up and laid back like hes going for top corner. he must be banging them in top corner in training but its not translating to the pressure moments on the pitch yet.

That's the danger with aiming high. They may be harder for the keeper to reach, but they're definitely easier to get wrong in a pressure situation. I don't think it's worth the risk.

yea head down and go for the corners imo but players like Mo back themselves to do anything, i'd guess he goes through a couple of bags of balls in training finding the top corner with every one. i think a miss or two in the league and conversations will be had, gentle words may even be had after this.

Yeah I never had him down as a great penalty taker but thought he's earned a go because of last year when he was as reliable as anyone

I just hope he's now passed the fail quota and he'll be back to last season's standards for the real games

hope so, probably helps Mo that what i'd guess is everyone second choice macallister also missed

Anyway I'm probably the only non-moron who thought Jones was decent? Harvey as well, probably our best sub

Virgil and Kerkez were our worst players, followed by Mo the passenger and Gakpo the darwin. Endo didn't do himself any favours either

Was a bit strange but also exciting that our best players were the 3 new signings. And safe to say the Georgian keeper isn't getting a game until Ali gets injured or personal issued again

I thought kerkez was decent. Don't get me wrong there was times he had brain fart but he bombed up and down nicely and worked well in the first half with szob, wirtz and Ekitike
