Real Madrid Vs Liverpool

And let's wait forever before recasting criticism as crucifixion.

What are you criticizing at this point?

The team isn't known, the game hasn't been played.

Picking up on a perceived 'vibe' of fatalism and implying all is lost is premature at best.

I think we should see what happens before we get too depressed.

I would be very surprised if the team posted above is the starting lineup. Unless he is injured I would fully expect Manquillo to play RB. Johnson should never play there again. LB or nowhere for him as far as I'm concerned.

Parts of this make sense.

Lovren has been sketchy - drop
Gerrard shite at DM - drop
Coutinho and Lallana playing better than Raheem in past couple of games
Lambert more suited to a lone striker

Doesn't look pretty but I would hate to see us line up with the same pathetic line up we had against Newcastle. Would prefer to seen Manquillo in there.

If you really need to hold on to possession and not make loose passes then Coutinho shouldn't be in the team for a match like this.

I'm not picking up on a vibe, I'm picking up on the interviews he's given. If you disagree, disagree, don't resort to this disingenuous crap.

"I tell you the truth, so I will, one of you will betray me - and his name is in this envelope!"

"But before all that we'll have a good slap up feed, so we will"

You play your best team against a top club. If your best team doesn't do well enough, you work on them and re-think your tactics. We've got red flags, not white ones. This is disgracefully small time from the manager. The only chance with a weakened team, given the standard of our second and third choices, is for Real to not bother and feck up. After which I guess it will be hailed as a genius move. I'm no lover of the myth of Saint Rafa, but he was an egomaniac who would never, ever, want to be humiliated in a game, no matter how out of sorts his first team was. Rodgers seems to be an egomaniac who will let the club be humiliated so long as he can exempt himself from the experience. It's semi-detached.

"This best team", has been shite all season with the exception of Spurs away, and maybe one or two other okish performances.

So we play Gerrard and Sterling tonight, lose which we're gonna do regardless of team selection and then we struggle and lose to Chelsea and Rodgers' gets slaughtered for playing Gerrard and Sterling 3 times in a week.

Also, it's not like he's gonna be playing 17 year old Academy players...These are first teamers.

He really can't win at times.

An unfortunate final sentence. But I've asked this before - what is logical about reacting to your best team under-performing by playing those who you've previously judged not to be worth putting in your best team? It's no good putting quotation marks around your best team and then turning the squad upside down. Do you think we haven't been playing our best team this season? If not, why not? If we have, why act as a cheerleader for not playing the best team, or 'best team,' tonight? There's just no rigour in these arguments at all.

I definitely agree with the sentiment that BR thinks he has been playing his best team and so by making wholesale changes and indeed putting in unpopular players like Lucas, Toure, Lambert & Markovic that it looks like a v weak team saying 'may as well lose without the good players'. I think part of it is unfortunate timing and opposition as we have now realised that the team he has been playing with Balo up top isn't our strongest lineup.

I don't think this is the strongest team but I think he is making changes that need to be made, unfortunate that it is in such a key game. A point here would be v v important.

I don't do disingenuous crap, and I don't have to agree or disagree. Simply look at his quotes on the official website today and calm down.

I'm returning the patronizing tone because you've clearly got yourself in a tizz.

Graeme Kelly ‏@GraemeKelly1 5h5 hours ago I understand tonight's team. Chances are we wouldn't win tonight either way, rest players and go for the win on Saturday.

The last time I saw a team tweeted by him he was about 4 players out.

Well, this is the team doing the rounds:

Mignolet, Johnson, Skrtel, Touré, Moreno; Henderson, Lucas, Markovic, Lallana, Borini; Balotelli.

I would play
Jones
Moreno
Skrtel
Lovren
Manquillo

Johnson
Lucas
Allen
Lallana

Sterling
Borini

But then I dont care about this competition at all we arent good enough.
I want to win the carling coca cola worthington milk rumbelows cup and sign a world class striker. Thats my ambition for this year.

And Markovic would be playing for the reserves where kids who come to Anfield should be playing until they are ready.

Is the League Cup really called all that? Must be a nightmare for advertising execs to sell.

Top team by the way, go the Reds! right up Main Street.

I think many would argue that our best team doesn't contain Steven Gerrard at the moment. I'm not inclined to agree, personally, particularly in the Champions League. I think he's been one of our better players of late, although admittedly that's nothing to be proud of. But putting aside whether Stevie plays or not, the issue here is the way Rodgers is talking about this game as if it's a dead rubber. As fans, we're aloud to say that. Pundits and commentators alike can broadcast it across the airwaves. The ENTIRE footballing world can scream it from the fucking hills, but our manager most certainly should NOT be saying it. Particularly not on the eve of the fucking game. What kind of message does that send to the players? Let's be clear, if he fields a weakened team, it's not because he "trusts" everyone to perform. These would be the same players that he hasn't felt able to trust against Premier League minnows, never mind the best team in the world. He'd be sending them out like lambs to the slaughter, whilst simultaneously issuing them a thinly-veiled threat that if they don't perform against the cream of the crop then they can have no complaints if they're consigned to the scrapheap.

Rodgers has been looking every bit the Swansea manager of late.

Nailed it.

I'm all for picking Gerrard selectively; but he was born for the big stage, and nearly always raises his game for big European games. There's no way I'd drop him for a game at the Santiago fucking Bernabeu.

He said a result. 0-5 is a result. It must be so exciting when you lot hear George Osbourne saying he's relishing improving the economy. These soundbites are so reliable, and well worth quoting. (Well, if you want to indulge in lame sarcasm, we can all do it, too.)

You never know, the team we put out the other week we all thought was our best hope of getting anything. Sometimes things just work out differently. I personally wouldn't play Markovic, but the rest? It's as much as a muchness really, isn't it?

Toure versus one fuck up per game Lovren

Lambert versus zero Premiership goals Mario.

What about 20 fuck ups per game johnson versus bright young spark manquillo?

Ah but this is the Champions League.. Mario has a Goal to his name !! 1 more than Lamblert

(forever the optimist)

This has to go down as one of the oddest games I'm preparing myself to watch. I'm so utterly convinced we'll lose I'm not sure I see the point in making the effort. Still stranger results have happened so you never know I suppose.

I can't bear it. And it's on ITV as well - that means Chiles and Tyldsley will be adding to the discomfort.
