Reds to bid for Kjaer

Liverpool are ready to kick off the race for rising Denmark star Simon Kjaer, according to a report in The People today.

The big defender, 20, wants a move to the Barclays Premier League and agents acting on his behalf have been instructed to secure a switch to a top-four club.

The Reds have indicated an interest and People Sport understands they would be willing to make a bid of around £10m.

Kjaer has a release clause of 12m euros (£10.8m) in his deal at Palermo and president Maurizio Zamparini is adamant that he will not be leaving for a penny less.

All monies must also be paid up front.

That is not too far from Liverpool's valuation and Kjaer would jump at the chance to sign for the Anfield club.

Chelsea and Manchester United are also monitoring Kjaer's situation, and Juventus are also keen.

But the English top flight is his preferred destination and Liverpool hope to steal a march on their rivals.

Well you can rule it out straight away if the fee has to be paid upfront, we'd never go for that right now.

Has the kid actually seen how our youth setup works?? But then an all-Dane CB partnership sounds nice too...

I don't think he'll spend much time in our Youth setup should we splash the cash mate.

Anyways he's a boyhood red and has said so on several ocassions. Agger has undoubtedly told him a few things as well.

I would've loved this if it wasn't for the sauce. The People is quite a rag isn't it in the NOTW mould?

We've been linked with him before though mate haven't we?

I can't see us signing him until the summer, if there is anything in those rumours..

Yes we have. Reckon the People are just re-printing the rumour on behalf of yet another poor display in defense though.

That said he could turn out to be a wonderful defender in the Sami mould. He's tall, strong and wins loads of headers. He's quite young though so it's difficult to say exactly how long he'll need to make a real impact.

Can we cash in on a few players and afford the fee it would be a quality signing I'm positive.

I've seen him quite a few times for Palermo, and I think he's a great talent. Shame we didn't sign him 2 years ago.. If we sign him, Kyrigiakos career will be a short one..

I'm not sure we'd do that considering a) Carra's average form the whole year b) Danny's injury issues and c) Skrtel's poor season

Maybe there's some resemblance in looks between the two but definitley so in terms of ability.

Kjaer's strengths are pretty much the same as Sami's were actually.

He's tall, strong, great in the air and a very decent passer of the ball too. (I posted his assist in Denmark's game against the USA a few days back). He's pacier than Sami but evidenlty some way of in terms of sheer quality as he's still so young. He's got the package though and that's why he won't come cheap. If at all.

It might be that picture, but with those stumpy legs he looks a little short to me.
I was thinking the same. He's not short, but he's not as tall as Sami.

Also, wouldn't really bank on him being a Liverpool fan bringing him to us:

Although the centre back is a childhood Reds fan, he says his head would rule his heart in any decision over his future.

Having already warned Sir Alex Ferguson that he won't join United to sit on the bench, he now gives the other perspective in an interview with his native Tipsbladet newspaper.

'If United just had two defenders whilst Liverpool had three, I would choose United without hesitation,' he said.

'It does not help to choose with the heart in that kind of situation. I am a professional.'

Just checked it and he's 6.2.

I know i'm probably alone on this, but i'd rather focus on quite a few other positions before we look to buy in another CB. I've still got faith in Skrtel, Agger and Carra.

One other point.

We've got a couple of young lads coming through around the same age as Kjaar, should we really be spending £12m on another CB and forgetting about them?

I've seen very little of them granted, but they both seem very big and have done nothing wrong in their limited appearances they've had for us so far.

Maybe we've allready got the solution at the club?

I would have to disagree. Our weakness in the air at the moment is proving catastrophic. If we could re-sign Sami Hyypia aged 24, I would put our entire transfer budget towards it. This kid does look like him, but at 20 he's surely too young to transform us the way Sami did. Who else is there?

I agree that Kelly looks a very good player. His debut v Lyon was Gerrard-esque in terms of quality, I thought, even if he's obviously a completely different kind of player.

I thought he was very impressive too Bunny, i also liked what i saw of Ayala when he played earlier on this season in the league.

They are both 6.3 plus and around 19-21 i think, so for me i'd stick with what we have and hope that we can develop some of the talent we've currently got at the club.

I'm a bit torn on the issue myself.

I'd love to see a young player of Kjaer's caliber join us but on the other hand he would demand everything we've got in the kitty probably.

And as said he is young so it would be a gamble although only a minor one.

Skrtel, Carra and Agger does after all still look like a good-ish trio. On paper at least.

*Albeit beeing only 20-years-old Kjaer has thoroughly impressed me when playing alongside Agger for Denmark. He really looks like he could turn into a superb defender and if he's going to have a great WC his prize will go through the roof btw.

x2. We're weak aerially & it's cost us massively this season.

The second game against Lyon was the last straw for me. I want another CB.

It's all well and good saying the backline has been a little unsettled and the midfield hasn't offered as much protection, but we should really have centre backs who don't go to utter shit as soon as the going gets tough.

If we have to sell one or two of our existing lot, so be it.

As for Kelly, I have a lot of faith in him - he's looked a class act since his first game for the reserves - but I'd rather he was eased into first team football at RB.

Damage control. Instead of signing Kjaer in the summer we wasted 17 fucking million on a liability at right back.

if we sign him, it says a lot about how confident we are that in the Agger/Skrtel future I think.
Skrtel is an average defender who has already reached his best. He's a low ceiling player. A good back-up but not good enough to start long term.

Fixed that for you Glock. Next time don't forget to use his full name, Simon Kjaer, and even his middle name if it exists, to stamp that extra degree of authority like you normally do.
