Reina: “I have three more years with Liverpool. I’m satisfied, comfortable and my family are very happy. Rumours are difficult to control but it’s flattering when a club like Barca are interested in you.”

The Spain international added: “I don’t know if there has been contact between the clubs or with my agent. At the moment I don’t think there’s anything serious.”

Reina hopes to finish his career back in his homeland, but the keeper added: “I don’t know how long I’ve got left in football – what I do know is I want to enjoy what remains and feel appreciated and at Liverpool I have that.”

“The years I was in Barcelona were very good. I don’t have any bad feelings about not succeeding there. I played more than 50 games, when I was less than 20 – it helped me grow a lot,” he said. “I would’ve liked to have played there more, of course, but there’s no need to over-dramatise things.”

Suarez

“Listen, every player has their price but there’s certainly no pressure for the club to sell him. We’re trying to build that bit of quality so he’s not for sale,” Rodgers told the Daily Mirror.

“I don’t have any doubts there will be interest in him this summer, because he’s up there.

“There’s a small percentage of players who are world class and he’s in that bracket, so I don’t think it will be too dissimilar to when I first came in last summer, with clubs making their interest known.

“People will want to take him, but I think we all recognise how integral he is. The owners have been absolutely unequivocal in their resolve in terms of wanting to keep him.

“I had a meeting with the owners when they came over and talked about lots of stuff and that was one of them.”

Although Suarez’s domestic ban will rule him out of the first six Liverpool matches of next season, the forward will spend the next month on international duty at the Confederations Cup

Rodgers, however, says he cannot worry about Suarez mingling with the top players from Spain and Italy, an environment in which ‘tapping up’ is not uncommon.

“You can’t control that – people getting into his ear while he’s away. These are professionals, and Luis has got a tournament to play,” the 40-year-old continued.

“But I can’t worry about that. I know we that as a club and me as a manager have supported him, told him when he’s been right and when he’s been wrong.

“The supporters show their passion for him relentlessly so, as a club, I don’t think we can do any more.

“We have supported him when he’s been in turmoil and when he’s had setbacks, when there’s been traumas over the last couple of years. He knows he did wrong.

“Yes, there was that initial period of shock and anger at the beginning but a wee bit of reality has set now. I look at him in training and he’s still working hard.

“He was committed to wanting to stay and work with the club. I think he’s very happy here – as a club we’re doing everything to keep him and all the players content, and in the main I think they are.”

Some reports have suggested that Suarez is ready to turn his back on England after he was villied in the media in the wake of the Ivanvic incident.

But Rodgers praised the Uruaguay international for his attitude and said Suarez will not be adversey affected by his ban.

“This is a guy who lives his life for playing football – he’s been brilliant. Apart from those first few days when I gave him a period away, he’s come back and he’s got on with it,” the former Swansea boss added.

“He goes away now with a chance to reflect, plays in a tournament over the summer, and will join us after that. He will just get his head down and work, take his punishment and move on.

“I think where he’s happiest is with his mates in the team or with his family. He just loves his football and I’m sure being away with Uruguay will give him a focus and concentration.

“Obviously he had a circumstance which made it extremely difficult for him, but I’ve seen nothing to make me think anything other than he will want to stay.

“I’ve been in contact with his agent, so I think he needs to go away, play in the tournament, have a period of reflection and come back, raring to go, to help us have a good season.”

If Reina wants to retire after a stint back in Spain, we need to ensure we have a young keeper who can either learn from him over the next 1-3 years ...

I wouldn't sell Reina unless we get a good offer for him, he seemed to sort his form out a bit in the 2nd half of the season.

When was the last time a bona fide academy keeper broke into a Premiership team? Like most teams, we seem to invest loads of time and money into a whole swarm of young keepers, yet not only don't any of them develop into genuine contenders for the first team but also hardly any get sold on to lesser clubs. We might as well alternate with outfield players in there. If Reina goes we'll either get a promising keeper from abroad who'll need a season to adapt whilst leaking goals, or we'll get Vorm. I hope we keep Reina.

Pepe's on pitch interview after last Sunday's match convinced me that it is his intention to stay.

Which probably means that he is off even as I type this.

If Reina is intent on ending his career in Spain then this may be the time to sell him, he has 3 years left on his current deal and its unlikely he will extend if he fancies a move back home while hes still capable of playing at the top level. He would most likely run down his contract and walk or do 1 or 2 more seasons and leave on a miniscule fee. Either way I dont think we will be getting a decent fee for him unless we sell this summer, at least that way his departure would help fund his replacement.

We should offer him a new deal now and if he doesnt want to sign sell him

Offer him a new deal ?

Why ?

New deal doesn't = increased value. It equals = more pay off to him when we want to get rid.

Yeah that doesn't sound like the way to go at all. He's 30 with 3 years left on his contract - that's more than enough.

New deal = increased value when we sell him, goal keeper i still a sellable asset at 32, unless we allow him to run down his contract.

Why would we be paying off a player who is wanted by Arsenal and Barcelona (alledgedly) when we could sell him?

If you dont think he should be offered another contract then we should see him now

I told everyone we should have considered selling him before he signed his last contract. Which was around the time Arsenal were going to bid 20m, and before the inevitable noticeable dip in form.

He signed that contract, and we're now being offered 10m.

The contract probably only has any bearing on value when it's in the stages were you're going to lose someone for nothing. He's got three years left on the deal, he doesn't become more valuable by us giving him a new deal. All we're doing is increasing the amount of money we'll be on the hook for. Why do you think Barca are only willing to offer a two year deal?

Football clubs are becoming too smart to pay big money for 30+ keepers.

We don't need to sell him at all - fir all his dip in form he's still a good keeper.

I think we've enough defensive issues on our plate with trying to bed in several new CB's than to be trying to get a new keeper integrated as well.

But there's no reason why we shouldn't have kept him. You forget to mention that the change in form occurred over the tenure of two managers who were ultimately sacked. He now looks fitter and sharper, and keepers can generally play at a good standard until mid to late 30's, even if we only get the remainder of that contract out of him he's capable of earning it because he's still good enough to play between the sticks for a title challenger, that's why Barca are apparently keen, that's why Arsenal wanted him. Saying we should have cashed in is on the assumption that we would have spent the £20M well, which is risky business when you consider what we've spent money on over the last 4-5 years.

Why does Rodgers keep referring to Luis having his price?

I reckon the owners have said if £50m comes we're accepting it or Rodgers would be willing to.

That keepers can generally play at a good level into their late thirties is a fallacy. The ones that do are the exception, not the rule.
That's why Barca are offering a two year deal, and why nobody else is showing interest in Reina.

If you look around the league, or any league, you'll see it clearly. Shay Given was a very good goalkeeper, he turned to shite around age 36 - to the point where he doesn't get a game for one of ten worst clubs in the league. And he was replaced by 28 year old Guzan.

Iker Casillas, aged 34 suddenly starts getting dropped by Madrid because performances weren't up to scratch.

In the Premier League most keepers are in their twenties. The ones that aren't are:

Cech aged 31, already his best form is behind him and his replacement is already bought.

Tim Howard, aged 34. I'd give him a decent chance of hanging around for a while but he's not going to play for any top club ever.

Ben Foster is 30. He's not good now, so I don't see why he'll be good in 5 years time.

Jaaskelainen is 38. I haven't seen anything of him, but i doubt he's anywhere near as good as he used o be.

Schwarzer is 40. Fair play to him.

Arthur Boruc is 33. Is he any good?

Al Habsi is 31. And didnt have a great season.

Julie Cesar is 33 and looked pretty decent for a relegated team.

So there's two goalkeepers in their late thirties playing in the Premiership - and they're maybe okay at best.

There's a good few in their early thirties, but only two playing for decent clubs. Cech who could be replaced at any time and Reina who is thought to be available for the right money.

As an FYI - He's 32 and that's not why he was dropped (Diego Lopez isn't some spring chicken either, he's 31). He was dropped most likely for two reasons - 1) there's always been issues with him being a bad trainer (and that's something Mourinho supposedly hates) or 2) Mourinho wanted to show who's boss. What's the best way to do it? Go after THE greatest Madrid symbol of the era.

Begovic's future has been the subject of intense speculation for some time and the January capture of Jack Butland from Birmingham only intensified talk that the Bosnian stopper would be sold by the Potters.
Manchester United were initially thought to be keen, but the much-improved performances of David De Gea ended their interest, leaving Liverpool and Arsenal as his most likely destinations.
However, quoted by The Lying Rag, Begovic said: "I want to start preparing on July 10, with all the players of Liverpool."
Neither Stoke or Liverpool have confirmed the news, but with doubts surrounding the future of Reds keeper Pepe Reina, the signing of Begovic would not come as a major surprise.

From football365, not The Lying Rag btw.

What keepers did have a good year and what are their ages?
