Hes been shaky, something he's admitted himself.

I'd happily bring in a highly thought if young keeper and loan him out (like courtois for chelsea). If reinstall has another squiffy season we have a young player who should know the set up

I agree, but he has been frankly fucking awful these past two seasons. The Ramires goal today was shambolic, and it brought back memories of other moments from Pepe. He isn't what he used to be unfortunately.

Of course, we're overlooking former Brazil international and former Roma number 1.

Doni ain't exactly shit.

Doni may not be a top class keeper, yet, but he's far from being "shite". He had a shaky start, admittedly when he filled in for Pepe, and the red card certainly didn't help. But against Fulham on Tuesday night he was probably our best player.

Pepe has been on the slide now for about 3 years, he was once the best keeper in the country and he gets by now more on reputation that performance. Sadly though we have much bigger issues in our team than his half arsed goal keeping, I think Kenny needs to have a chat with him and decide if his heart is really in it, he could still command a decent fee but it seems like he just doesnt want to be here anymore, maybe a move would be best for all parties

I wont give up on him yet. New GK coach and he could be back to his best next year

He definitely needs proper competition and the threat of being dropped hanging over him. He's had it too easy for too long.

I wonder if the club will accept an offer for Reina in the summer. He's bound to be highly paid and we could get the same level of performance from a promising youngster costing a lot less. I'd be surprised but I wouldn't rule it out.

He's still good enough, and some of the comments are over the top. He's kept us in more than a few games this season.

he is undoubtedly still a good keeper, and if he was our biggest concern then the team would be title contenders but its still clear to me that his level has dropped in the last 2 years

I don't disagree. It's not particularly surprising. The reason he was so good was his agility and reflexes, studies have shown they peak in the mid twenties. Reina will be thirty later this year.

But the number of keepers who go on to play possibly their best football in their thirties suggests that the effects of that can be made up for in other ways.

Name another keeper who had physical talents like Reina.

none of the ones that go on to play late into their thirties ever had it. And they're typically a lot lighter than Reina too.

It's like the difference between Gerrard and Alonso JJ.

Alonso is going to be better throughout his thirties than Gerrard because he was never relying on excellent physical attributes to be good.

True, added to that, he often played as an auxilary sweeper, racing out of the box to clear danger with foot or head, leaving very few opportunities for the opposition to play long balls over the top for forwards to run onto, he doesnt seem to do that much anymore either. Whether thats due to age slowing him down or a change of tactics its hard to say

I hasn't noticed that, but on reflection he has hardly done it this year.

Brad Friedel, Cesar, Kahn, Howard?

Anyways, writing Pepe off at this stage (29 years old) is simply madness. He's not had a great season by any means , yet he remains one of the best in the world and could easily be good enough to have another 5+ years with us.

Do you want me to start naming the thousands of keepers that were shite in their thirties ?

None of those keepers you named ever had the physical gifts Reina did. They didn't have what he had to lose. And none of the keepers you mentioned were actually better in their thirties. They were just still good enough to play.

You're speaking crap Rosco.

I've already named 4 recent keepers off the top of my head who have thrived well into their 30's whilst having similar styles, heights and builds to Pepe. You've simply read something about "agility and reflexes" and jumped to the conclusion that Pepe will turn to shite, even though there is enough evidence to say other wise.
