Irrespective of his failed move to us, it's worth acknowledging his International record.

Scored his 46th goal for Ireland at the weekend. That's 25 more goals than his nearest competitor, Niall Quinn who finished on 21.

Almost a goal every 2 games for what is effectively a shit International team, and he's now only 3 goals behind England's leading goalscorer Bobby Charlton, a record which he'll surely beat.

Easily the greatest player in our history. You can argue the merits of McGrath, Stapleton, Staunton, Bonner etc - all players who had great carrers in an Eire jersey. None of them did it over the sustaiend period Keane has.

46 goals for Ireland is remarkable.

Rosco's head will explode when he sees this..

Truth hurts I s'pose.

Phenomenal record and he's certainly ONE of our greatest ever players but for me Paul McGrath has to be up there with him. Roy Keane would deserve the same adulation were it not for his Japan/Korea hissy-fit.

How can we incorporate Rafa, for a bigger bang ?

i've heard that the keane transfer would've worked out splendidly had rafa not been blocked from buying barry by rick parry, because rafa only wanted keane as part of a system based around barry feeding him the ball from the left wing.

if rafa's plan hadn't been foiled by parry and H&G then we would've almost certainly won the title in 2009. as it was, rafa was forced to sell keane (parry's signing) for a very modest loss just a few months later.

Doesn't even know the words of the anthem, so I can't consider him to be Irish, even if he was the other Keane, Mcgrath and a while host of others rank above him.

International football has become a bad joke in the last fifteen years so any comparisonbetween someones achievements now and forty years ago is disingenuous to be polite about it. Milan Baros probably has a better record than both Keane and Charlton but I wouldn't put him over either of them

And Peter if you think thatwould have worked your a little bit mental

Quite. Even bigger lol at Barry 'replacing' Xabi Alonso.

Ha. Well to be fair to Garry Barry he did have a good season at Villa when all that shit came about.

The thought of him plodding around on our left wing in the slowest midfield in the world. What the fuck!

Back on the Keane topic......its a shame Torres spent half his time injured when Keane was here. They did have a few decent games together like vs Everton away. Keane was never suited to the lone striker role he ended up playing in Torres' absence and the rest is history. Meh.

There might be a grain of truth somewhere there. Basically we will never know until someone who was there writes about it one day!

Its debatable as to whether we would have won the title anyway, as the combination of Keane and Barry might not have worked out, but in any case, there was still nothing forcing Benitez to sell Keane when he did.

Even if he did only want Keane in combination with Barry, he must still have rated him to a degree. What would have happened, say, if he had bought both of them and then Barry broke his leg in the first game? Would Keane still have been shipped out?

The whole situation just seems really quite bizarre to me

it's obvious: if barry had got injured then we could have loaned keane back to spurs for the duration of the injury. rafa had it all under control. at least he would have if not for parry.

Which would still have left us in exactly the same position wouldn't it?

yeah but at least it would've saved money. it's a risk you take. what's the alternative, playing keane in the team without barry feeding him balls from the left?!! LOL.

there's no way that was going to work - as rafa ably proved by selling keane in january. his only mistake was not waiting until the following summer to try to buy barry again, and so enabling barry to feed keane balls from the left the next season. fuck it, he could still have been feeding him balls from the left even now.

For a player with an international track record such as his he is much unloved by the Irish football fan.

That's the impression I got, too. After all, pete is an intelligent human being.

I think it probably was yeah. Normally Peter's posts make sense but the ones on this thread have a piss take feel about them!

It's 'cool' to rank McGrath higher. Truth is, he was a bigger alcoholic and bigger offender than Keane ever was/is. McGrath was a great no doubt, but Robbie Keane's been the better performer over a longer time. 46 goals and your nearest competitor with 21 is staggering.

He's done it when it counts too.

of course i was just being a giddy goat.

Sorry, I've got a bit of a flu today so this might be going right over my head . Obviously your subsequent posts were slight piss takes but your original was based on what Benitez said about the failed transfers or ?

Would Liverpool have won the league last season if Barry had signed? It is a question that Benítez must have mulled over a thousand times. He gives a deep sigh, so heavy that it is audible when the tape is played back.

“You never know,†he said slowly. “Football is a funny game. The plan was for Barry to play on the left and feed the ball to Robbie Keane, who would play up front with Fernando Torres. This blueprint had to be scrapped. The collateral damage was Keane, who signed from Tottenham Hotspur before the Barry deal had been done.

“When we wanted to sign Barry, we were sure we were signing a good player with a very good mentality and the quality to play in the Premier League. The priority was Barry, then Keane.â€

Anyway , in future if i ever have a slight moment of insanity and think "hmm maybe having Rafa back wouldn't be such a bad idea", then reading those quotes again will snap me back to reality and remind me of what a mentalist he was at times .
