According to reports, Glen Johnson is considering leaving for Spain this season. Here are 10 reasons why I think this summer it's the right time to part ways with Johnson and why we don't even need to replace him:

1. Johnson is the most inconsistent senior player in the team. It's much harder for a manager to find the perfect balance in the squad if one of the players fluctuates so unpredictably - one week he produces a wonderful performance, next week he gives the ball away with every pass. Having a player like that makes it much harder to preach consistency to the team.

2. His attacking contribution is vastly overrated. Last season: 1 goal, 3 assists. Season before: 1 goal, 0 assists. Season before that: 2 goals, 2 assists. Enrique, Agger and Skrtel have all scored more goals than our supposedly best "attacking defender" last season.

3. Johnson is not a great passer. He is not a bad one, mind, but not a real tiki-taka player either; more often then not the triangles on our right flank when Johnson is playing result in a throw-in to us at best. His crossing is nothing to rave about.

4. He is a notoriously wasteful shooter: last season it took him 39 shots to score his 1 goal. Most of these shots (72%) were not even on target. A player who shoots so much and rarely hits the target just wastes many promising attacks and overall makes the attack less efficient.

5. His regular forays forward make it necessary for our right wing-forward to cover the space in defense - good when you have Kuyt or Downing playing in front of him, not so good when you have a newcomer like Aspas or youngsters Ibe and Sterling.

6. He earns £5.2M per year. And he is turning 29 in a few weeks; his value is only going to drop from now.

7. He is not a winner. He got the Premiership winners medal with Chelsea, but in truth didn't really cut it at Mourinho's team. His time in Liverpool was a time of mid-table mediocrity and decline. We need new energy to push us back up into contention and maybe Johnson is right to want new motivation of playing in a different country.

8. Kelly seems to be ready to have his breakout season. Even last season it was obvious that Rodgers trusts Kelly and likes the idea of a more defensive-oriented player at RB. Unfortunately, a promising season was prematurely ended by a knee injury. Kelly came back even stronger this year and if he can stay healthy this could be his chance to break into the first team. He has the talent and all the qualities to be a first team player.

9. There are 2 more young right backs waiting for their big chance: Flanagan and McLaughlin. Flanagan has already played in the first team under both Kenny and Rodgers, McLaughin is arguably a bigger talent who needs to start receiving some game time at the highest level to boost his development.

10. Beyond Flanagan and McLaughlin, there is enough cover at RB in case Kelly gets injured. Wisdom has been playing as a RB last season with some success and Henderson could do a good job at RB if needed - nothing wrong with that (for instance Essien played many important games Essien for Real last season, Valencia has been regularly used as a RB by Fergie last season etc).

Which reports?
And no you arguments are very one sided and hopefull at best so didn't convince.
Don't know about you, but just for once I don't mind keeping a good player who doesn't shout his mouth and hopefully wants to stay. It's nice for us to all ask for a bit of loyalty but LFC has to sometimes also show some, so that means keep the decent players we have add and when we need to. I'm not convinced we can replace him a decent player in the next month, so rather keep what we have.

Strangely, I think Johnson always looks more solid and dependable when he plays on the left. I'm unsure why this is or whether it is some kind of illusion. Anyway, if the price is right I think between Kelly, Wisdom and Flanno we have decent cover. If Kelly stays fit, a big if, I think he could make it tough for Johnson to be first choice. Another season for Wisdom could also see a 'proper' defender emerge.

Johnson, agger, skirtl, reina, carra, Luis all gone or linked with moves.

Thought this summer was about adding 1/2 quality players to challenge for top 4 and not a total rebuild.

And we still cant shift downing and Lucas😉

I probably rate him as a great impact player in the attacking third than you (in the sense that he has this ability to get the ball and run in causing problems) but I generally agree that we can use the likes of Kelly/ Wisdom there who have a greater promise for the future so it would be sensible to cash in.

It'd be ludicrous to sell Johnson this summer.
+1,000

Wisdom, Flanagan and McLaughlin ? Having a joke mate ? We are trying to reach the CL postions and it ain't going to happen if we weaken the team to that extent. Kelly I really like and he has great potential - but until he's shown he is not injury prone then there is no way I'd have him as our #1 with those 3 as back-ups.

Why? It's mostly shit.
I respectfully differ from that opinion Gerry - there is a lot of talent in our team/squad now, the best it's been for many a year. Packed full of young players demonstrating superlative skills, but naturally a little inconsistent and maybe without the experienced decision making skills as yet. But the promise is there and we have some wonderful established players bringing them along. Weaknesses are there for sure .. but it most certainly is not 'mostly shit'.

I'd sell, for the right price.....

Rightly or wrongly I believe that between Wisdom and Kelly we would be alright at right back.

Sometimes you have to jump in order to fly, so to speak. We finished in mid table in each season Johnson was here and I guess you could make an argument that his strengths didn't really compensate for his weaknesses enough. It's not like he was our best player in any of these seasons. I think it's time to try something new. We have enough talent and cover at RB not to consider Johnson irreplaceable.

Flanagan played not bad at LB last night actually. That cross for Aspas (when the keeper made a save with his face) was really sharp and perfectly timed.

Am I reading too much into the fact that Flanno is still with the first team squad and hash't been loaned out like Robinson? Seems like Rodgers is fairly certain that he will buy someone for LB, but he needs extra cover at RB, hmmm...

Yeah and that goal they scored was a due to a sublime bit of defending by Flanno too.

So the only one we keep from our last season defence is Enrique which is the one Rodgers doubt most? Strange strategy for reaching top 4...

Backups arn't good enough to replace him I don't believe.
Flanno is ok but hasn't show he can take over and that penalty conceded last season was mindless even for a young player.
Kelly and Wisdon aren't RBs, I think of them more as CBs.
That would mean we sell him and then spend money replacing him when it's obvious we have other areas to focus without even thinking about the racist cnt. So what's the point especially with less than a month left?
Keep Johnson and focus on other areas would be the sensible option.

It's a sad fact of changing times, often this forum would be about which players to buy but now seems to be populated by which ones we should sell, Lucus/Johnson/Agger.
How expectations have been lowered, hopefully at some point we can get back to where we were...

I would definitely not sell Agger, unless they offer REALLY crazy money. I rate Agger.

I am also not so keep on selling Skrtel - I think he can be an excellent 3rd choice CB if he can get used to Rodgers' system.

In terms of Johnson, I think some of the points you make are valid, others less so, but on the balance I think the argument for selling is a strong one.

Where I completely disagree is the notion that we wouldn't need to replace him. Flanagan is crap, McLaughlin is a million miles away from the first team, Kelly has been plagued by injuries since the age of 17 or something and Wisdom is a young CB that is still error prone.

If we sell Johnson we're left with one experienced specialist full-back in Enrique (you could include Agger and Toure as both have played at full-back but that would leave us painfully short in the middle).

I'm all for bringing in youth but you have to have some experience to back them up. If Johnson goes, we need to buy.

That Rodgers system of letting the opposition walk through our midfield takes some getting used too!
