Slot machine

Interesting, I thought it was closer to Arnold, and by "thought" I mean I googled it and got:

The name Arne, predominantly used in Scandinavia, has Germanic roots and signifies "eagle". It's believed to be a contracted form of the name Arnold or a shortened version of various Norse names that begin with "arn", also meaning "eagle". In Norse mythology, the eagle was a symbol of strength and wisdom, making the name Arne carry a similar connotation.

More Details:
  • Origin: Germanic, specifically from the Old Norse word "ørn" (eagle).

  • Meaning: "Eagle" or "strong".

  • Historical Context: The name Arne, or its variants like Arnold, has been in use since the early medieval period.

  • Variations: In Scandinavia, Arne is a common forename, often combined with other names like Tor-Arne or John-Arne. In Germany, the form Arno is more frequent, says Citizendium.

  • Other Meanings: The name Arne can also refer to the central stone in traditional Norwegian homes where the fire was lit, which is also called an "arne," according to The Bump.

Yes, it's predominantly a Scando name, but some European nations (especially but not only the Dutch) choose Christian names or nicknames from other languages/cultures quite often.

Would that be bald Eagle?

After that I'm none the wiser if we'll see more rotation next year. On the one hand he's speaking about the December to March period being relentlessly tough and the PL being extremely competitive and later talks about the research and his philosophy that playing a core team together as much as possible yields increased consistency and results. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out next year.
I can't see him changing his philosophy as far as the starting team goes, though hopefully with more players he trusts we'll see more substitutions and rotation in cups.

When he talks about Gravenberch at 12:32, I remember watching this United game in preseason and thinking the same at that moment.

I was like "hello", this is interesting. I text my Chelsea mate who had been ribbing me about Caicedo/Lavia deals, and said, watch out, I see something here with Ryan. Slot saw the same thing.

If he can take a ball under pressure in the middle of 5 United players with such ease and a simple drop of the shoulder, he's got half a chance of being a decent controller at 6 if he tightens up his defensive awareness (which VVD has helped him with by all accounts).

I remember going into preseason and the United game thinking Jones could be our starting 6, but coming out of the game more impressed with Ryan:

I look forward to seeing what preseason brings this year.

For me, the most interesting player to watch will be Stefan. Like I said a year ago (he seems 2-3 seasons away from being a good midfielder):

I think Jones had a shocker at six before Grav was tested there. Jones kept pissing around with the ball in dangerous areas.
Yep. Preseason set him back. Slot didn't really want to risk him in the pivot any more and has largely played most of the season as 10 (or odd occasion 8).

What I like about Slot, is he see theses things and hasn't made the same mistake twice.

Jones as a 6.
TAA as an 8 vs Forest.
Darwin as a starting forward.

Hopefully in the summer he addresses the obvious weaknesses in the squad:

1) Starting CF
2) Starting LB
3) Another RB (If TAA goes)
4) 3rd choice CB
5) Another DM (If Stef shows he's not ready in preason)

How did Klopp not notice that Gravy could do a job in the 6 role?

In his defence, Grav looked useless and disinterested when we out of possession last year. He only showed any life when we had the ball, which is why he got dropped from 8.

Neither are the hallmarks of a great six. Should have been given a chance, though.

I think slot is worse at motivating players and managing a squad thus far, and better at getting marginal tactical gains across the league season. I'm not sure I'd be that enthusiastic to be a youth player in a slot regime, either.

Those are just my early impressions. There's still so much I don't know about slot, and we haven't really seen him deal with a dip, or have to get particularly creative with injury. He got some massive decisions right though, and he followed klopp very elegantly.

I was quite disappointed about how he approached some big games, but he's been far right more than wrong.

Oh and we won the league.

Did Klopp actually play him as a 6 though? I thought (only remember) him as an 8 and mainly as an advanced LM.

One thing that's not being talked about enough is Slot's formation when we are losing by like 2 goals (or a goal 85+mins).

He goes gung-ho with a back 3 (or Ryan in a back 4 stepping into DM on the ball). Carabao cup final, Fulham away, Forest away.

I'm wondering, if we get 2 flying FBs in Kerkez and Frimpong, and sign someone like a Hato/Huijsen, could this provide us a lot more tactical flexibility in those type of moments?

A back 3 of:

Gravy (better playing out than Kerkez, VVD, Hujisen/Hato

Wings backs of Kerkez + Frimpong

Midfield pair of Szobo + Macca

Front 3 of Salah, New CF, Diaz

I think Grav’s first season in the EPL was definitely too early to try him at the #6 - he was still getting to grips with the speed and intensity of the league, can’t afford to do that in the most crucial position on the pitch.

Well, he’s only the second manager to win us the league in 35 years. That’s already an almighty accomplishment.

Sure, still premature if you ask me when you line them up and run through each of their resumes.....both on and off the pitch. The man's just walked through the gates, give him some breathing room....don't get what the rush is.

Rafa's biggest accomplishment with us was in his first season. Beyond that first year, he won the FA Cup and the League Cup in 5 years or so.
We can compare the different circumstances (Benitez inherited a far inferior side), but Slot's made a tremendous start and etched himself in LFC history with the league title.

Rafa never won the league cup.

Rafa's and Slot's first seasons are similar in that they both won a major trophy and lost in the league cup final.
The big difference is that Slot did it with a far superior team.
They also had their pre-seasons disrupted by the Euros.

Still, Slot is a league winner now and deserves to have his face on that banner.

Big nope on Houllier, though.
