Slot machine

I think we need to be City close to their peak dominant in possession and have teams scared of us otherwise this just causes problems.

I think that’s fine in possession but what about out of possession?

You don’t want to be in a position where the midfield is constantly dragged out of position to cover the left flank. Also Macca is not as mobile as Szobo.

So the front three all taking up fairly central positions who is tracking back?

The only time we’ll be out of possession is when the opposition is busy picking the ball out of the net and carrying it back to the centre circle.

Like others, I'll be amazed if Slot messes with the midfield and I think Wirtz will take one of the striker spots in the squad but be used as a false nine/ten. I think he'll be expected to start moves and then burst forward to the box to also try and get on the end of things. His goal for Germany last night epitomised this and we know he can finish for fun. We will be playing a system that maximises all his strengths, which won the battle of the sales pitches.

In a sense I think we'll play him as a Firmino/Jota hybrid type player.

-------Gakpo--------Salah
------------------Wirtz
Kerkez---Mac----Dom-----Frimpong
---------VVD----Grav----Konate
---------------------Ali------------

It's all speculative though, but this is what I reckon we would have pitched to Wirtz and it won't be liable to change no matter what happens at LW.

Out of possession I'd expect Slot to maintain his 4-2-4 set up with Wirtz and Dom joining the first line, Grav stepping forward to Mac Allister and the fullbacks dropping back into shape.

No way Slot sold him on us playing as a LW. #10

Is Grav suited to play deep? I imagine Endo would be a better fit? Preseason will determine how we play. The above is our 1st 11, I don't think anyone would disagree with that.

Gravy was our second best player this season playing deep. It’s all about fluidity and gravy could go forward and another drops in his place.

I think you have it spot on with that formation - it looks brilliant, and for me it calls out that we need that extra midfielder. Once this Wirtz transfer is done, I really want to see who else he will bring in - we know we will get a striker if Darwin goes - that has go to definitely happen. Then I want to see if he gets a defender and an additional midfielder. I love the ruthlessness of Slot/Edwards/Hughes - that's why I have no feelings of connection to them like so many of you on here.

The formation the way you put it makes Gravvy into something like an old-fashioned libero, the Matthaus-Beckenbauer type who progressed the ball all the way from the deep into attack. I think he might enjoy it!
