So, Luis to Barca.....

This Is Anfield ‏@thisisanfield 2m Sepp Blatter has praised Luis Suarez for apologising over his bite. Another step towards the ban being reduced then?

Apparently Ajax are entitled to 5% of the fee. Guess what Southampton, we aren't going to demand that Barcelona cover that as if it's somehow their problem.

Disappointed in this but it makes total sense to sell the player at his peak . It would be great to have him help us win the CL this year though.

I, like many of you I'm sure, don't really care now. I don't mind either way what happens. I just want it done.

I, do think, though, that we could well struggle next season - particularly if the right replacements aren't found. He's one of the best players in the world, and I think we could have struggled anyway given the extra games next season, and other teams improving around us.

What this money does do, though, is give us the chance to improve our squad depth - an area that cost us last time around. I'm pretty torn. I don't think we'll challenge for the league this season, and I'd take 4th now, but I think in the long run we might be better off.

We're not going to "struggle". That's what we did under Hodgson. We may well find it harder initially to reach the same standard as we did last season, but that's a rather different matter.

Two ideal scenarios - either one I could live with, anything else is gloom & doom :

1: -
- Henry says "not for sale",
- Luis' appeal sees his world wide ban reduced to 4 weeks
- Luis recommits to LFC & repeats last season
- We win the league & European Cup

2: -
- We reluctantly agree to sell to Barca for £80M+
- We get Sanchez & a few other worldies to replace him
- FIFA view his appeal against the ban as petulant (whats the word the FA use?) and increase it to 12 months
- We win the league & European Cup

He's going, there's no point in having any delusions now that we will keep him, it's why we haven't said anything. The Echo have reported today that we're close to an agreement, so that's it more or less confirmed.

Tom: the word you're after is "frivolous" and under other circs.I'd have thought FIFA could well take that view if he were still appealing on the same grounds he gave before his apology. Now that Blatter's praised him for the apology, though, I'd be surprised if they do take a hard line.

Struggle for top 4 that should have said. I think it will be a battle for the top 4, if I'm honest.

Agreed, but IMO it's a battle in which we'll be well involved. Biased as I may be, I reckon we're still the best bet below the probable top two.

To wise ears, that apology was more a legal statement on the “Anything else you would like to tell us about yourself” section of his Barcelona job application form (salary already agreed).
It sounded like a man who’d been caught in a brothel on a stag trip and instead of apologising to his wife, begged forgiveness from his mistress.

Very apt.

Yeah I think Chelsea and City are a given for top 4, if not top 2. Then there's Arsenal who always finish top 4 as it's all they're good for. That leaves one of us, a (surely!?) improved Man Utd, and then below that you've got outsiders like Spurs and Everton. I think it will be a really tough season in that regard. Selling Luis will definitely knock us back somewhat, but if the squad becomes better on the whole then his loss may become compensated.

Sanchez coming in the other way would go some way to resolving this. Shaqiri coming in too would add extra firepower, then we need to address the defence. Ideally, I'd like another top quality striker, but there's a dearth of those available so whatchyagunnado

Seeing as Rodgers has said he altered his system to benefit Suarez, presumably he'll now favour the system over the player. It'll be interesting to see how it works.

The reason to be optimistic for the coming season, I feel, is Rodgers. He really has got us playing some scintillating attacking football over the last 18 months. Our transfer targets seem to indicate that is likely to continue. We may replace Suarez's goals from others on the field elsewhere.

Alongside replacing Suarez, the biggest challenge for me is tweaking the system to make the defence more solid. We'll see if he can do it.

Luis actually scored more goals for Ajax than he did for us.

They have won the league every season since he left.

If we can unearth some upcoming gems then I think we will be fine.

I liked the look of that Origi kid, he reminded me of a young Anelka when he was at Arsenal.

I think Shaqiri could be a good buy if we could get him for under 20M

My real hope is we could possibly buy Isco or someone similar, I'd actually ask Barca if we can have Delefeou as part of the deal....

So I guess there's not going to be any 'real' news on this until late late in the transfer window. We'll just know it's happening when our summer spending goes past about 60mill (I guess it's currently about 17+10+5).
If Henry was going to give us about 40-50mill to spend this summer, plus player sales, and he lets us spend the Suarez money, we could be in for a whopping window. 100mill+.

Even though we did brilliantly in the league last season, I'm concerned we'll do a spurs as the current transfer committee's record is hit and miss, some brilliant buy, and some bollocks. We're in a bit of a quandary really, there would be no point in filling the squad with loads of average players that might not make the first 11 with that amount of money to spend, and on the other hand, you don't want to go and add 5-6 first team players and unsettle the current lineup and have to start re-teaching everyone the system again. And we can't just buy 2-3 superstars, as they're not going to want to come to us.

I'd like to see a new first team LB, CB, and a striker-come-winger. That's 3. But as we've already signed the llama, if we got the other 3 too, that might be pushing it with too many new faces.

Yeah, this is probably done now.
Sanchez could be a seperate deal that both clubs are working on, and the player will need time to decide his future.

Official source says Suarez's move from @LFC to @FCBarcelona is so advanced, no further meetings are scheduled. Price is non-negotiable

Buy out clause then?
