So one less place in the Europa League

Birmingham winning means the place won't go to the EPL. So

place 1: EPL 5th
place 2: Winner FA Cup - EPL 6th if winner also qualifies for UCL
place 3: Birmingham city

We could just win the Europa League and save all the worrying about not getting 5th spot.

That's what I'd do anyway.

Seeing the teams we've put out for Europa league this season, will it be that huge a miss if we fail to make it? Granted, new/targeted signings might see European football as the incentive to join but how much weightage does Europa League seriously have in that aspect - given the calibre of players we'll be after and the lvl of opposition interest.

Of cos, on the other hand, European football to a club like Birmingham (no offence meant) may yet be the difference in winning the race to a signing.

One season of rebuilding and full assault on the league doesn't sound too bad to me.

not putting the right signals out to our best players though if we miss out on it. i think i'd rather be in it and play the kids. they need to be blooded against proper opposition consistently and the europa league would give that.

place 1: EPL 5th
place 2: Winner FA Cup - EPL 6th if winner also qualifies for UCL - FA Cup runner up if the winners have already qualified for Europe, If runner up also qualified for Europe then it goes to 6th Place.
place 3: Birmingham city

Putting out the right signals ?

So, Gerrard, Raul, Suarez and Carroll will leave in the summer ?

No, but we still need more signings and who knows what difference it might make to some of those players?

The club certainly think it's important. Comolli said a while ago that winning it is our top priority this season.

did i say it will make them leave? i'm saying it's hardly going to do their confidence in the team any favours. Besides, you picked the player who said he'd retire with us, and 3 who were acquired this season. What about reina? glenjo? Agger? they're important players for us and might get fed up with not competing for silverware. the more ocmpetitions we are in the better as far as i'm concerned

I'd rather play on a saturday, then the thursday/sunday games.

If we miss out on Europe, fine. Then we can concentrate on the league. With a much better team aswell

I think it's BS that you 'concentrate' more on any given comp. I'm sure one of those fuckers who does the Freakonomics books could prove me right.

Look at Spurs. Everyone said they'd suffer by being in the CL... Er, I think they're fourth, 3 behind Citeh with a game in hand.

Exactly. Winning is a habit this club has needed to rediscover for quite a while and that, not to mention the money we'll need for signings, is reason enough to do our best in every game in every competition.

This. And also it's a potentially slippery slope to decadence if we think we're too good for the tournament.

First we miss 2 seasons of the CL in a row (this and next), then we miss a season of the EL (let's say it happens for next season). There's no guarantee we'll finish top 5 next season even if we had no European distractions - teams like Citeh and Spurs have now built larger and stronger squads and will probably continue to build on them, and we have enough holes to patch but no idea of how much we have to spend to do it.

We need Europe to keep our best players and attract the better players.

If they get "fed up" they can fuck off.

We tried to please a certain individual and he still shat on us.

I'd rather we have a season focused on the title/top 4.

fair enough. i think more games can breed a winning mentality at the club. something we had slightly rediscovered until wigan put the skids on us. With better players this would be easier to cultivate granted, but the lure of european football is sometimes a massive draw for these players who would improve us. Even if we're shit in the competition next year, i think it's vital we qualify just to advertise ourselves as a European presence.

Winning the competition gives you a total of 8,4 mill euros

Inter last year earned 49 mill euros winning the CL.

Spurs are about to finish the porking of the leaders of Serie A while looking at finishing 3rd.
Chelsea are in the last 8
It would be a huge shock in Manure aren't
Arse take a lead to arguably the best 11 ever in world football
Just over a year or so ago we were looking as good or better than as any of these sides, we lost a couple of players but now people are seriously arguing a couple of games in the Europa next season could be bad for us

I mean... puhlesase. Get your fucking heads together.

Even so, we need that money, especially given what FSG have said about us having to generate the bulk of what we spend.

A) I didn't realise it was your dough. But even if it was...
B) Those figures are wrong anyways. Inter's money includes the TV pool. The Winning figure didn't.
C) Would you rather get no money at all than some from the Europa?.. Also
D) The players like to play in Europe
E) I like to go to the games.

Spurs sqaud is better than ours.
[/quote]

So ours would improve if we didn't get in Europe? Good argument.

mainly down to their scouting network over the past few years. they've spent when they had to and bought talent. They aren't getting knocked out the top 4 easily so we need to make ourselves seem as viable as possible for potential players

Lets be honest, its a shite competition. Steaua, Rabotinki, Sparta Praha, Utrecht, Trabzonspor. Its not mouthwatering is it?

The Anglo Italian cup had as much appeal.
