So, Tsimikas v Robbo...

Robbo confirmed vice captain, apparently. Has to mean Tsimikas gone

Premier League Win GIF by Liverpool FC

I was wondering the same when I saw the squad for the pre-season tour. It was something like 5-6 keepers and 3 left backs. All seems a bit excessive.

It seems a really strange move for a 22 year old - would've been better off going and trying to establish himself properly somewhere.

I guess we must have offered him some of that Nat Phillips money to stay. Not sure it makes any more sense for us than it does for him.

He gets to play regularly, has likely a higher salary than he'd get at Derby and there's still the chance he could get into the Liverpool squad if he performs at Derby or if not then a sale to a better club than Derby perhaps. Would make sense to me.

It sure does, but maybe the kid's dream is to play for LFC. He's got it in his blood already.
Robbo will probably leave next summer, so there will be a left back slot open.

I quite like Beck from the limited looks in the past (think it was pre-seasons or U21s). If he comes back equipped to be a Tsimikas replacement, that's a win-win. In a couple of seasons when he wants a bigger role and wants to leave, training with the top tier guys would prepare him well for a starter spot in a club elsewhere too.

I'm always happy to see a good youngster renew and go out on loan, try to make a name for himself while still keeping hopes alive of coming back ready to suit up for us again. It's the renewals of guys like Rhys Williams that confuse the shit out of me.

Agreed. Virgil as skipper has worked out well, but Robbo was also a viable candidate IMO and I like the idea of keeping him around and involved.

Agree. And, I think being vice-captain gives him the platform to remain hugely influential, whether he is on the field or not.

Great response and really shows the leadership skills that we need in a big, talented squad. Have no doubt he'll be ready when we call on him and that we will, in fact, call on him plenty this season.

Also can't have hurt his decision to stay seeing the receptions Trent and Hendo got upon leaving, albeit for very different reasons.

I think Robbo goes with our blessing. He gave it everything he had in every game. Even making mistakes we could see he was done physically and mentally. He won’t be leading us on or doing hand gestures or going somewhere which is apparently against his beliefs.

He will be getting huge renditions of oh Andy Andy. The club will give him a great send off.

Is he our best LB ever? Steve Nicol might be ahead of him, but other than him who? Alan Kennedy?

Robbo is hands down our best LB in the PL era, that's for sure.

I think it's pretty crucial that we've kept a few of the old heads, it's always important when you're in transition and bedding in new players. The club could easily have gone into disarray having lost Jota the way we did and also losing some big popular characters over the past few years (Kostas, Hendo, Milner, Jots, Kelleher, Trent, etc), we could easily have lost focus and direction, so I think it's really important that Robbo has stayed and that he's being so mature and realistic about it.

At this stage of his career the one cushion of not playing is knowing that you're kind of unofficially playing a part in a team of staff that's pushing a new breed towards success, and almost "directing" the team in the same direction that he has already been down. We've not really had that in the last few decades so much, where we've had too many players who've done it all and can help usher in the next chapter.

There are others though in addition to Robbo : VdD, Ali, Mo., Gomez and Jones and even to an extent : Macca, Szobo, Endo, Konate and Gakpo, all either part of a winning CL or PL squad or both.

I think we have continuity and are well stocked in that regard. But I'm happy Robbo is still around.

He needs to change his style. He doesn't have the legs anymore to go bombarding down the wings and then get caught out of position and then commits a foul worth a yellow if not red,
Some of his fouls give me anxiety because they're so blatant.
