So who do we want/expect/hope?

It seems wrong to be discussing Kenny's replacement so soon after his leaving of Liverpool. At this point in time I can barely give a stuff about football let alone the next manager however throughout the day I have found myself warming to the idea of Rafa's return.

Correct. We are a big club still - but a top team? Come off it.

the new manager has a big job on hands. you look at our squad, you either have aging players on huge wages or young inexperienced players and not many players that fall inbetween. it's a huge job and shouldn't be given to someone who isn't in it for the long term. ross' criteria for a new manager is pretty much perfect. fuck the 'world class' label and get someone who fits the job description not someone who has a fantastic CV managing top teams with a blank cheque

I mentioned Lambert earlier. His record at Norwich is sensational - took over a debt-ridden club in 22nd and took them to two successive promotions (no play-offs) and an excellent first season in the premiership. All with a bunch of lower league players.

BIG CLUB does not equal TOP TEAM. Barcelona are a TOP TEAM. Real Madrid are a TOP TEAM. Manure are a TOP TEAM. Juve are a TOP TEAM. AC Milan are a TOP TEAM. Bayern are a TOP TEAM. We aren't there. Maybe one day.
i'm not saying that a top team = big team.

what i'm saying is that if you take context, the bigger picture into account, we are a top team - we've had a bad patch, but you would have to be from an era before 1954 to not describe liverpool as a top team. yes if the current bad patch was in its 7 yr or so, then we should be concerned.

And we have to give the DOF and manager 2 years to clear out this shite before we expect anything. Otherwise we'll continue on our spiral

Dave, seriously mate. He won't be back under FSG. That's what I've been told by two reliable people now. Forget about it. FWIW id have him back before many of the names bandied about here

I can only hope you're wrong.

The man is a genius compared to half of the shite I have heard mentioned.

roma were 6th in the previous year capello took over - they had only won seria A twice in their history, capello came in and won it. a quick look through their transfers does not suggest he was bankrolled by abromavich of his time

Walter Samual and Batistuta.....cheap as chips

I want this guy...(on the left)

Ok, so you're agreeing with me. We're a big club that's not a top team currently. And we haven't been a top team for 20+ years already (two top 2 finishes won't change that, or some brilliant runs in Europe - some fairly average sides have had those too, it's the league that makes you the best).

i wouldnt be totally against van gal and i think id quite like avb, although im not sure why, and it would almost deffo end in disaster, i havnt really watched teams under capello but he comes across as a bit of a twat but thats just me being an eejit

No, if the description above happened, I would say we are not a big club. in other words forest could cling on to their hisotry and be a big club. my point is that when you think of top teams in the UK, liverpool are there. that is a fact. we have had a bad patch, but next year we will be considered a top team.

back to the main issue. capello did it with roma, which adds to his cv, does not detract from it.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has told ESPN that he would advise his manager Roberto Martinez, the favourite to succeed Kenny Dalglish, to steer clear of the vacant manager's position at Liverpool.

Whelan was shocked when ESPN broke the news to him of Dalglish's sacking, even though it had been expected, and he believes that Liverpool need to find a completely new management structure.

"The club have great supporters, but the place is a morgue, a desolate place, without heart, all I can say is what a shame for their supporters," he said.

"The club needs a management structure, it needs a boardroom filled with the people running the club. When we went there, there was Alan Hansen welcoming people, it was a bit embarrassing to be honest, although he was doing his best."

Whelan also insisted that the Reds should be treating the man known as 'the King' with more respect.

"They shouldn't be sacking Kenny Dalglish, they should be making him chairman, let him run the place," he continued. "As for a new manger, I am sure they might want my manager, but he's been the favourite for the West Brom job, then favourite for the Aston Villa job, now he's favourite for the Liverpool job.

Did a sterling job at Chelsea

He got them knocked out the carling cup. That's it.

I don't get why it was "player power" for months, yet when he got the sack he was shit.

He needed to break up the clique but didn't have the time to do it.

He didn't solve that problem though. And, given the players they have, was doing shit in the league. They finished 6th and need to win Saturday to be in the CL next year

Nah but he did at Porto where he worked miracles.

Harsh to judge a manager when the owner is Abramovich and the players are the Brave John Terry, Cole, Lampard, Drogba etc.

Ok, he made mistakes and by the looks of it tried to do too much too soon and it backfired but he'll have learnt from it and i still think he's a very talented manager with a point to prove. I'd much rather him over Martinez.

I agree, but I also think it didn't help that he was with Jose at chelsea. He was probably seen as a helper and it's hard to shake that image when you're thrust into the hot seat. Especially when you're the same age as your team.

I think at a club with no previous history he could be solid.

I'd prefer him to Martinez myself. I'll get behind any manager who comes. I'll reserve the right to say whether they're the right man or not
