Gerrard: Soto's new dimension

Steven Gerrard believes the presence of Sotirios Kyrgiakos adds a new dimension to Liverpool's attack.

The Greek defender netted his second goal of the season in the 2-1 win over Blackburn with a fierce header from one of 15 corners taken by Gerrard on the day.

Kyrgiakos was unlucky not to get another to make it 3-1 - and afterwards Gerrard was full of praise for the veteran.

"He's terrific in the air and I know that if I put quality deliveries in there, we'll get goals from set-pieces," said the midfielder. "The slight disappointment is that we never got one or two more.

"It's certainly a weapon in our armoury that we know we have to keep working on and goals will come from it."

Yeah but just ONE thing Stieve.

YOU are if not the best, one of our top 3 best header's of the ball, WHY THE FUCK ARN'T YOU IN THERE DOING IT TOO?????????

He's by some distance our best set-piece taker.

We are talking corners, not free kicks.

Gerrard would be much much better on the recieving end of a corner than taking them, just him being in the penalty area would cause so much panic for the defenders, i bet they would double or triple mark him alone.

Corners are set-pieces, aren't they?

Either way, he's our best corner taker as well.
Is he?

Thats open to debate, what do you think the percentage of his corners resulting in a goal are?

How many times do we waste corners, I think we had 18 yesterday and got one goal from them.

everytime we are defending a corner, I am shitting myself because we conceed a lot of goals from them.

We should be scoring a higher percentage of goals from our 'set pieces'

Who would you rather the ball fell to in the penalty area of all the players from yesterday match?

25 Jose Reina
37 Martin Skrtel
23 Jamie Carragher
16 Sotirios Kyrgiakos
3 Paul Konchesky
10 Joe Cole
4 Raul Meireles
21 Lucas Leiva
8 Steven Gerrard
17 Maxi Rodriguez
9 Fernando Torres

Subs
1 Brad Jones

34 Martin Kelly

19 Ryan Babel

33 Jonjo Shelvey

28 Christian Poulsen

14 Milan Jovanovi?

24 David N'Gog

I bet you pick Gerrard in the top 3?

He should not take corners...

his heading, shooting and agility is too good a weapon to not use.

Konchesky, Meireles or even Lucas should take them.

Actually I always thought Stevie was pretty fucking shit at corner-taking and decent with free kicks. I just seem to remember loooooooong periods in the last 2 years where he wouldn't even be able to get a corner into the box that the players could attack. Remember thinking Alonso or Lucas should be taking them and that we should have him and his heading abilities flying around in the box.

For now, I'd like to see what Meireles is like taking corners.

I don't really understand why any Premiership player can't take decent corners.

I can see why some may be shit at penalties or even free kicks to a point but putting in a decent corner is something that surely can be practiced.

It takes bottle if its at the away crowds corner, or 3 of 4 corners at away grounds, the abuse can get insane, and your very very close to the crowd.

For such a great passer, Alonso is a very mediocre set-piece taker. In the last two years, one of the most notable areas of improvement in Gerrard's game for both club and country has been set-piece taking.

I remember one Meireles corner yetersday. It hit the first man.

Gerrards "I'm the captain so I'll take everything" approach really irks me. Surely he knows a strong, tall player would be a threat in the box. Aurelio, mereiles and cole should be allowed to try their corners one game

I suppose you're right as I haven't been watching his set-pieces that closely, but whenever I think of Gerrard taking corners specifically, I think of corners hitting the first man.

Gerrard's Corner kicks have been spot on for over a year now. Its just that we are really poor at attacking them as a team.

Alonso was a dreadful corner taker for us. His ability to hit the first man every time never ceased to amaze me.

Gerrards set piece delivery have been excellent this season. When Soto is playing, we have a aerial presence in the box and then you get results. Without Soto, there is sadly not many good headers of the ball in our squad.

Gerrards corners were much improved and, bar one, were much more dangerous.
Indeed so.

But they certainly needed to be improved as well as they've been mostly dire for far to long.

Someone said he never took all of them either

It was Sotos goal it was going in anyway before it took a deflection.

Makes sense. Just thought the commentators was talking about an OG.

We had a lot of corners, but we created a fair few chances from them out of which we got a goal and should've had a pen.

I've got no issues with Gerrard getting into the box, however he's going to be wasted there if the delivery is poor and as things stand, I've yet to see any real evidence of other players being as good as him when it comes to delivering set-pieces.

The converse is also true though (there's no use in delivering them well if there's no threat on the end of them). The taking of corners and free-kicks is a classic example of something which can be worked on in training, and should be IMO if there's really nobody else we can rely on to take them, which is disgraceful when you think about it.
