Rishi Sunak has insisted that Brexit is in the long-term interests of the UK, despite current disruption to fuel and food supplies.

In his first Tory conference speech as chancellor, he said leaving the EU would provide "flexibility" to shape a more modern economy. He also said he wanted to cut taxes, but only when the public finances are on a "sustainable footing". And he announced more funding for research into artificial intelligence. He told party delegates he was "proud" to have backed Brexit, in spite of warnings before the 2016 referendum it could end his political career. And he pledged to activists: "I put my principles first, and I always will".

So Brexit will now lead to UK throwing extra resources at creating Skynet?

Smashing.

What could possibly go wrong with Boris in charge.

May not be as funny to non-Irish people, but Farage has now been tricked into saying Up the Ra, wishing Gerry Adams a Happy Birthday, using a Republican slogan that means "our day will come", and now, for the third time, quoted a famous Republican song.

All for the price of £73 on the cameo website.

That Rte lass or whichever disapprovingly repeating "up the ra, Nigel" in a mocking voice was great viewing

I suspect probably not. I don’t think he takes himself any more seriously than anyone else does.

I suspect that if anyone did he would probably tell them to mind their own business, which is fair enough really. If he wants to look ridiculous then it is up to him I guess.

I'd rather we had more overt nutjobs in charge. Not ones who pretend they're reliable, ones who say 'i fucked up, of course I did, everybody does'

On the whole partygate thing I'd be lying if I said I was doing anything other than laughing at the political capital they're losing. Have a drink with the people you're working with. Who's arsed? Life is hard enough.

I don't think anyone minds them having a drink now.

But they made the rules. If you popped round your mates after a hard day's work and had a drink in the garden, you were fined if caught. My wife had to celebrate her 40th in lockdown. Parents dropping off presents at the door.

We didn't have Christmas at the in laws because in my area it was cancelled by Boris and chums.

Thousands of people didn't get to see their loved ones before they passed away. My own mother was in hospital for months (not covid) , I was only allowed to see her when she was was on end of life care (she probably wouldnt have been on EOL care if she was allowed visitors).

All while they were partying/having a drink etc.

That's why they should go. They made the rules, and broke them.

It's weird/horrifying to think that the next election will probably come down to "a woman doesn't have a cock" vs "you can't afford to heat your home".

I think the woman-is-a-tricky-concept party will probably win this time.

Not sure really. People don't seem that enthusiastic about Labour/Sir Keir Starmer from what I can see. The stay at home party might well win

I get all that, I'm just saying that if you've spent all day with the same people in meetings then having a bev when you're finishing isn't gonna do anything to control any spread of the virus, so the rule was stupid in the first place.

But like you say, they made the rules, so fuck em

Don't you think the electric bills going up like 250% is a bit of an issue?

I don't really see how they escape that.

It's a lot of an issue! I have no idea how they deal with it, but the point is that it doesn't necessarily switch people to Labour, who are probably just as unpopular really.

Actually I don't really think Labour will win. I think they'll probably be the biggest party and do a deal with the SNP. And I really really hope that leads to proportional representation. Is that likely? Does PR suit Labour right now?

What we do to young people by feeding them through the uni mincer is fucking atrocious.

Almost all of it a complete fucking waste of time.

For Labour to form a government with the SNP they would realistically need something like another 70 seats between them, at least 60 of them in England and Wales. On a good day then it is possible.

I am not sure that either the SNP or Labour would be that fussed about PR though. The deal breaker would almost certainly be a Scottish independence referendum. Why would the SNP not insist on that if they were close to power?

Labour sometimes make half-hearted noises about PR, but I am not sure it would really help them that much. It is far from a perfect science in any way, but they actually tend to get more seats in elections than their vote share would give them under a proportional system.

The argument that some make is that it would keep the Tories out as Labour are more likely to find parties that would support them, but that is far from certain either. A likely scenario is that the Liberal Democrats would get to choose who would be in power after each election. It wasn't too long ago at all when they kinda had that choice and they didn't choose Labour.

I’m still suprised there’s been no protests yet related to the current rises and the ones in the pipeline like the above. Couple this with any interest rate hikes over 2%, expect full scale riots.

It’s mental Le Pen with even her Russian links are a legitimate second party. I expect if UKIP was credible on a single policy as it was with Brexit, there’s always a chance some nutter party can displace Labour at the next election as long as they promise to reduce the cost of living.
