SUSO: 'I Want to Stay'

I saw a lot of him last season at Almeria and he was mainly used as a right winger in a 4-3-3 system.
Started off great, was their most important player during the first half of the season.
I've seen him play for the u19s and the u21s as well and where he sometimes is deployed in a central playmaking role.
The kid still has a lot of potential. There's not many players in our squad who can hold on and shield the ball like he does but he is somewhat of a ballhog.
His distribution and crossing can be magnificent but he takes too many touches at times which kills the momentum. This can be fixed of course.

I still think he can offer us something.

Yes. Hopefully £3 million from some Spanish club.

Give him a new contract and keep him thru December. If he's given a chance and can show an improvement on his last performances for us then keep him, if not then loan him out for the 2nd half of the season with a view to selling new Summer. I'd love him to make it because he has a lot of skill, loves the club and has a lot of heart but sometimes we have to be cruel to be kind, both to him and ourselves. Come on Suso, you can do it !

I think it was a mistake not to hang on to him last season. I think he's a special talent and although the criticisms in here are valid, he could be a great player for us. His close control is mesmerising and his passing is excellent. Work rate and shooting and maybe using his right foot now and again are the areas for improvement. I've no doubt he'll be a big player for someone if we don't develop his manifest talent.

I agree with you that he's got talent, but what's his end product? What seperates him? Every fucker's got talent these days.

Sure his close control is great, but he doesn't seem to have much more to him than neat and tidy. I watched him play a few times in La Liga last year, same thing - simple, lovely touch, great control, does fuck all. He's 20 years of age, about time he started doing at least some things that make you go 'right, here's a player'.

He needs to do a lot more for me.

He's always done things that make you say 'he's a player'. He does incredible things on a football field. Peter's point is more pertinent if you'll forgive the alliteration. It is where to play him that *is* the issue. Between the lines IMHO. He's a Nasri or Silva in the making for me.

Hmmmm, I'm just not convinced. Tbh I've felt like that for about 3 years with Suso now. I thought he was sensationally good when he first arrived, and I'd still bet his technique is as good as anyone's in the squad, but his weaknesses are really glaring IMO. Could he play in CM with so little strength and atheleticism? Not convinced. Can he play wide with no pace? I'm convinced he can't. So that leaves your suggestion of the no 10 role. And in all the fundamentals of that role he's decent but miles behind someone like Coutinho, and only about a year younger. That's the standard he has to reach if he wants to play there for us.

My feeling is that his level is probably as a good starting attacking MF for a mid-table La Liga side.

That's a big call right there. I have seen nothing in him to suggest that.

I don't think he is miles behind Coutinho (though behind certainly), I just think he has never had as much opportunity to play in his favoured position.

Although, as I think you'll admit, you haven't seen as much of him as those who have been following him since he arrived with us. Nevertheless, there are those like PH and Modo who are followers of the reserves and academy who share your feelings. I've just always felt there was something special about him. Sterling and Suso were always equally likely to be our stars from the academy, and i still believe Suso could make it given the opportunity.

Well, I hope you're right. I know I just said I could see him as an AM for a Spanish team, but I shouldn't have really cos I do still think his best bet is as a deeper playmaker, pinging the passes in all directions, and getting forward on occasion. A Jack Wilshere. I admit I could see him making it with us in that position. BUT there's the physical side to it he'd have to match up to.

I hope he gets a chance there. I just don't see him as a winger, I really don't.

That's true, I'm sure others have seen more of them, but I can only go off the games I've seen of him. I'm not doubting he's talented, I'm just not sure he's got that something extra that's gonna turn him into the world class player you think he'll be.

Time will tell.

Wingers don't exist anymore though....but I agree, he isn't a wide forward.

'Wingers' are pretty much dead in modern day football.

He's being destroyed out wide. It's like playing Pirlo or Alonso out there! It's ludicrous, it's my one gripe with Rodgers. He needs to play a deep central role. If we're going to continue shoving him out of position then we may aswell sell but I think he could be brilliant if utilised properly. He's taller than Allen and Mascherano and an inch off Pirlo so height shouldn't be a barrier for him, he does look deceptively small though. If he was drilled and coached with meticulous detail in a position that favoured his assets he'd flourish much much more than we're seeing.

He's probably behind about 8 other players for that "central role". There's no hope of him playing there anytime soon.

Yep, it seems that ship may have sailed for him. I know they're two favourites of yours but I think he's worth persevering with instead of Allen and Lucas. If Rodgers doesn't see him in his plans for the upcoming season, send him to a team that requires that type of player to see what he is capable of. It's all well and good getting minutes as Suso banged on about in his interview but he and we have to benefit long-term from his loan spell(s).

He's a markedly different midfielder from Lucas and Allen though. IMO he's competing with the likes of Coutinho, Lallana, Markovic, Sterling, etc for their 'spots' moreso than Lucas and Allen.

It isn't doing him any harm to play in attacking positions for the time being. I think he's still too young/stupid/inexperienced to learn how to play like Pirlo, so we may as well use this time productively by concentrating on his attacking play. Then in a couple of years perhaps he can be trusted to control games from further back, and do things which Lucas and Allen unfortunately lack the talent to do.
