Re: Site outages

We may have to change hosts lads if they don't sort their shit out

Re: Site outages

OK all. I've finally had a worthwhile conversation with them.

Anyway, we are hitting a fair amount of load and he's shown me evidence finally that we, as a site are consuming a fair amount of CPU and processes on the server. Today, even though we had only 122 max online we had 300 processes consumed. This effectively is killing the HTTP service on the shared server which means it cannot communicate with anybody. This is probably due to any number of things such as:

People having multiple windows open;
Guests browsing;
Other sites on the shared server becoming busy (note we're using the biggest chunk);
Faulty code - this is unlikely as no changes have been made lately and we'd have seen these problems a while ago

So. Obviously we'll be exploring other options such as a dedicated server but note this is a considerable cost increase for the owners and would mean us paying 3.5 times more than we currently pay now.

For the time being though can we all ensure we're not keeping multiple windows open and, if on mobile devices, if you're not using the site close the window down. In fact close any windows when not using the site.

Thanks

Sunny

Re: Site outages

I'll be speaking to other hosting companies as well over the next few days obviously.

Re: Site outages

I was about to give you chaps a piece of my mind.

Jules, however, has said what needed to be said, without the use of potty-mouthing.

Re: Site outages

Have you tried out memset?

I have a virtual server with them that I'm not really using and wouldn't mind you guys using, but it's quite a basic package that I've got.

What kind of bandwith etc. are you consuming?

Could we not help with server costs like a donate button or something?
That's something we'll always try and avoid mate. We want this site to be free for you guys and not become a Koptalk where you pay for the privilege of being part of the forum.

I'm not an IT-expert myself but I know we've been very pleased with the use of Amazon EC2

Cheap and realiable.

Cheers mate but not a fan of hourly charged services especially with a site with global coverage.

Re: Site outages

I cant seem to log on if I use my home's WIFI but can on my iphone if I use the 3G network.
No problems at work too. Is my IP address blocked or something? How do I fix it?

Re: Site outages

If you get a message when you try to connect at home can you screen capture & mail it to me, or any other admin (dont post it, it may have your IP on).

ta.

Re: Site outages

My home ip address has been blocked too. I'll try and get screenshot in the morning. (It's blocked by Letshost.com)

Yeah but you can accept donations without it beocming like Koptalk too. The road End site for example as an area where people are free to donate some cash to help with the general upkeep, and it works well.

I contributed to it last year, and I barely go onto it. the way I see it, we're all on there/her for a significant period of time, so it's not much of a scarifice to help with the running of it. the burden shouldn't just fall on half a dozen of you.

Why not just leave it out there, and if poeple want to contribute they can - their perogative.

Re: Site outages

ryan's righ - good point. Having an optional donate button is a long way from the constant commercial squeezing by yer man on koptalk. I would donate as well.

Hard to believe we're all progeny of koptalk. The people on here seem too bright for such an ignominious beginning!

Fair point Ryan. I will take it up with the other lads. We're trying to avoid moving to dedicated servers but we may not have much of a choice and costs seem to be 4-5 times what we're paying now so lots to discuss as you can imagine

Re: Site outages

Note as well all. I've limited the number of page views a "Guest" user to 20 per day. Whereas we welcome guests and hope they turn into new users they're taking up too much of our resources at the moment.

As do I.
While I think it admirable that the owners want to shoulder the burden I have no doubt that those who can afford it would not begrudge offering a helping hand in regards to server costs.

It doesn't mean that this place will turn into Koptalk, I think we are all far too aware for that to ever happen again, so I don't see there being any issues.

down for like 10 minutes 13.35 - 13.45 bst
Yup.

I also agree with the donations idea. I also think the curtailment of guests privileges is a good idea. It may encourage people to sign up and become part of the community. Instead of just lurking around sucking up bandwith.
